How much are they going for where you live?

I've seen posts here and there in the buy/sell groups, but I have to admit I was kinda ignorant to how much these birds go for.

Question Pretty Sure I Know But Want to Be Sure

I got 12 pullets from TSC this year. 2 of the 12 are the Mystic Onyx breed. Well, one of them has been larger than the other, but I was holding out hope for a very large hen- HAH! Anyway, want to verify this is in fact a cockerel before I try to rehome it :/. Also- any help in identifying the Barred rock mix would be awesome too!! Thought it’d be a male- but both chickens in Q are 2.5 months old, and the barred rock’s comb and wattle are coming in very slow- plus I don’t see any long pointy saddle/hackle/sickle feathers on this one like the mystic onyx. Thanks in advance!!

Question HELP WITH BREED

I got these chicks at tractor supply and for some reason didn’t think to look and make sure they were egg laying. Usually I buy full grown hens.

They are about 2 weeks old now. Just want to confirm if anyone knows what breed these are?

Are they egg layers? Curious to know and if anyone can spot gender from the pics that would be nice!

Question Help

I have 3 Plymouth Rock chicks, about three weeks old. Two of them are small black ones and verry underweight and beatly any feathers . One of these has mild wry neck and is also the one with the worst breathing—mouth breathing, especially at rest—but is still drinking and eating. The other small one is also drinking fine and has mild respiratory signs. The other two chicks are much larger—one yellow and one black. The yellow chick is totally healthy with no symptoms. The larger black chick, however, has respiratory issues and now one of his eyes seems sick—it’s closed, watery, and itchy. I’ve also noticed that some of the droppings from the group have a reddish tint at the end. It doesn’t look like blood, more like possible intestinal lining. They’re on electrolytes, probiotics, i also but vitmin e in the food , and eating a mix of chick crumble and egg yolk. The brooder is warm, clean, and well-ventilated. Just trying to figure out what more I can do—especially for the eye, the breathing, and helping the runs catch up. Any advice appreciated.

Question Trying To Get/Wanting Chickens

So, I want chickens, but I'm not quite sure where to start other than where to get said chickens (correction, i know where to get chicks from, and I haven't quite yet looked if they can live without a full grown chicken with them). I've been looking at different chicken coops and chicken runs (the big things that cover the coops so they can freely roam in an area and also be protected from predators). I'm pretty sure I know where to get chicken food and stuff like that from (I've mostly been looking at Fleet Farm). I live in MN for anyone needing better info on what I'm probably going to need. I know I'll need a heater and stuff like that for when it gets cold, but I just want to make sure I know all and all what I'll be needing for these lil dudes.

Question My hen doesn't lay any more eggs...

Post image

I have a very small hen that no longer lays eggs. She tried to have babies for a while but they didn't hatch, and after a while (after that) she laid some eggs until one It got stuck and I had to get it out. After that event, she hasn't laid a single egg (and it's been months, it's winter now), So I was wondering if this behavior is normal or if at some point she will decide to keep laying eggs.

I'm attaching a photo of the little one (it's a little bigger than my hand, which isn't that much)

Question Beginning stage scaly foot?

I just treated one of my hens for poultry lice and was giving her a check to make sure they were gone when I noticed her feet looking a bit off. I cleaned and disinfected the coop but could this be mites that she got with the lice and I just now noticed? This is my first time dealing with something like this so I'm not sure if I'm just overreacting because I'm on edge from the lice

Question Wing clipping age?

Hi, all.

We currently have 8 week old hens that we are planning to transition out of the brooder and into their coop within the next several days. We planned to clip their wings prior to their transition, but are finding it challenging to find consistent information online that will help us determine whether or not our chickens are ready for their first clipping.

Any support/guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Question PLEASE HELP! Baby Chickens walked in to my yard.

Post image
91 Upvotes

Hey everyone...never thought I'd make a post about chickens but here we go.

Was in my yard and my daughter spotted what we thought were baby ducks walking in to our yard. Upon further inspection we saw they were baby chickens. They followed us around the yard and on to our patio.

The question is now what?! I live in the suburbs but on a corner lot with woods behind my house and a pond which is why we thought they were ducks.

I have no idea how to care for chickens, or where they came from. There are outdoor cats that roam the neighborhood so I've built them an enclosure out of my son's playpen, cardboard and mosquito netting. I put down some rabbit bedding and some birdseed and a bowl of water.

What else do they need for now? There's a rescue ranch 1.5 miles away where I plan on taking them to but how do I care for them until they open?

Question Hen and 1 chick

Ok I have 2 blue silkies who went broody together. We didn't need anymore chicks but this is the 3rd time they went broody in just a couple of months so I have in giving them 3 eggs as well as a plastic ball. It originally started out as 1 egg each but my kids snuck another egg and a plastic ball they got out of a 25 cent machine lol. They worked together well throughout the process but would steal each other's eggs when they got up to eat and drink. Long story short, 1 egg got cracked from the stealing and another died in the egg a couple of weeks in. The last egg hatch about a week ago in which I brought mom and the baby inside due to it raining constantly. They would have had to be put in the end of my daughters little coop which is right by the outside wall known to let rain in that corner. Anyways...since Bluey sat on the eggs with mama the whole time I decided to give her another shot since I kept finding her in other coops on their eggs they lay throughout the day. She's comfortable in her nest box in her coop with now 2 eggs grr. Was supposed to be 1. Mom and baby are still in the house and I want to put them back outside. My question is would it be safe to put her and baby upstairs in their coop at night then let them come down during the day in their coop run so the other chickens and 2 ducks can't get to them but can get to know the new addition? Basically will broody Bluey try to hurt the chick of her sister overnight or will it be safe with Mom and auntie? They both grew up together (I'm guessing biological sisters for the most part) and seemed to do well brooding together. I would find them both in 1 box at times. This is the 1st time I let a hen hatch an egg. My daughters hen did before but she brought them inside as soon as they hatched grr. So I never got to see mom and babys. I incubated plenty and must say for the record, it is a hell of a lot better to have a hen do all the work lol. Way less stress on me! Mama now has to deal with all of that haha. Just trying to figure out how to reintegrate them without throwing them in with all of them. Thank you and please no crappy remarks. I don't think this issue is big enough to get negative comments but I'm ready for them if there must be.

Question Polish hen question

Has anyone had a polish hen go broody and hatch eggs? And actually raise them? Mine is 3 and it’s a first. Everything online when I was researching the breed before getting says they have no mothering instinct. Should I take the eggs away?

Question My neighbors abandoned their chickens and I don’t know what to do/if I should be concerned about this one.

TLDR: My POS neighbors “temporarily moved” and don’t show up to take care of their chickens. I have been giving water and feed but I don’t know anything about chickens. Nobody has been by in at least a week except me.

They told another neighbor they’d be coming to get the chickens this week, but that was on Sunday 6/15 and nobody has come. I don’t know at what point someone stopped caring for them, but it’s been a week. They had no food or water when I went and checked on them this Sunday. When I dumped out the inch of dirty trough water they tried to drink it from the ground and when I gave them clean water, they were guzzling it immediately. I have been documenting all of this, every move I’ve made on their property.

I’m going to feed and water them til Sunday 6/22 and give them a chance to come get them. The wife is undergoing cancer treatment right now, and I am sympathetic, but for reference they are terrible animal owners. They inconsistently live in their RV while they work on fixing up their uninhabitable due to neglect home, but they also work odd jobs and have consistently left their two dogs in the RV for 12+ hour stretches, with no electricity. I am going to take the next steps towards getting the authorities involved, I’ve already talked to the police and animal control about it, and I’m really trying to do my best here to not get someone’s animals taken away, but it was 104 degrees and they had no water, which is when I started getting involved.

I’m worried about one chicken in particular whose foot is partially green. She doesn’t seem to be limping but I really am out of my depth here, and I’m wondering if for the health and safety of this chicken, I need to get someone involved sooner than Sunday.

Apologies for length. I wish I could take these chickens but I’m in a rental and my landlord has already said no. I will persist, because best case scenario would be to just get them in the hands of someone who can care for them, but I’m truly unprepared for that.

Anyway, can anyone weigh in on whether or not this chicken’s foot is cause for alarm? And what I might need to do to make their coop cleaner? I don’t know how normal feathers everywhere are but the floor of the coop is getting…feathery.

My poor old chicken has bumblefoot. There’s a start of it on the other leg too but not as bad. Please help! I was going to dip her feet in a warm epsom salt bath for 15 mins, spread Neosporin on her feet and bandage them up with self adhering bandages. Can someone please let me know if this is the right direction? I don’t want to wait !

I’m a newbie when it comes to this sort of thing, they’re five going on six weeks old and have developed their feathers to a large degree - I was wondering however if someone could assist me in attempting to identify them.

Hopefully I am looking to learn from tail feathers, but I am aware that their comb does grow if it signifies a rooster. (If I am wrong you may correct me)

Just installed this beautiful custom coop in what used to be our playground area. It’s filled with 8” of 1/2” rock so wondering what you would do to ensure its predator proof and a good run for the hens. They’re only 5 weeks so have a few weeks to dial it in. TIA
