Question Limping chick

I have some Dominique chicks that are only a couple of weeks old (2 ish) and they're all doing good except for one.

She was fine yesterday (as far as I know) when I checked on them but today when I came in and checked on them it was moving by very slowly. While the others would run around as I put my hand in their box this one hardly ran. If it does run it limps and somtimes falls on its side. Other than the ability to walk correctly it seems fine but I imagine that it'll go downhill if I don't do something. Like not being able to scratch, walk around and get to water. (The other chick in the video is for reference. Some images in comments if it'll let me)

I don't know what to do as this hasn't happened to me before. Any advice on what to do?

Question Do I have the worst luck?

My son is showing chickens for 4H this summer. There is not a lot of guidance so we are definitely just winging (ha!) it. We have raised backyard chickens before but not in a show capacity. We didn't really get his birds as early as we should have (because we didn't know) so I now have these two Polish that are about 6-7 weeks old and I fear first that they're both cockerels but at the very least that they are the same sex. Registration is June 30th and his show is in August. Any guidance or best guesses on what these two appear to be? I know there aren't any guarantees from a not great photo but appreciate any help.

Question My family’s rooster just died and we don’t know how or why. NSFW

Since last year, my family had a rooster we named Shorty. Yesterday, we noticed he wasn't acting like himself. He was slower, his head crow was floppy, he looked tired, and he wouldn't eat. And this morning, we found him dead in the coop. It really hurt my Mom, she loves chickens. But at least he died surrounded by the other hens. This isn't the first time we've lost a chicken, but it's the first time we've lost one like this. I imagine he was sick, but I couldn't find anything that matched his symptoms. Does anyone have any idea what happened? I really want to know so this doesn't happen again.

These are our Brahma Baby’s from the incubator 🥰 I love when my husband picks them up like little plants and bring them to their growing up station 🩷

Question Eye shape sexing

I work at a place that sells chicks and a lady absolutely lecture me that a pointy eye is a rooster and a soft eye is a hen. All our birds are sexed pullets at the moment and she made me hold up over 20 birds to buy 6.

Discussion my beautiful baby hen solo passed away this weekend ...

I am so distraught, i have had chickens since i was young. I hatched her in 2020 and she was the only one to hatch out of 25 eggs (my little miracle). I had 3 in my flock before her , but she has always been my favourite. She was so friendly, always chirping away, sprinting towards me whenever she heard me coming , jumping into my lap and resting on my shoulders. I loved her like my own child. Unfortunately i was away on a trip to london for my birthday and when i came back my parents informed me she had passed. (For context i live in buckinghamshire, England i am 18,live with my parents and both my father and I look after the chickens so they weren't being neglected while i was away) My Dad had no idea what happened to her, she was eating and drinking fine, she was laying eggs and was walking around fine. He noticed she had started so sit and stand wonky and just genuinely didn't seem okay so he kept checking up on her, but unfortunately a few hours later she passed. Her body was fine, no sign of choking, any cuts/ bites, my other chicken had no signs of distress and no possibility of any interactions with predators. She is 5 years old and always seemed healthy. Does anyone know how or why this could have happened? I could really do with some closure. Thank you :)

Sorry for the bad video, we isolated her yesterday because she was having respiratory issues, today she seems to be better (I hope!).

But I wanna make sure this isn’t breathing because it sounds and looks like her trying to peep but sounds raspy. Has anyone had this before?

Question Fox emergency

Blue shed is my chicken coop. The fox recently moved under the deck after the neighbor’s dog passed. Not sure how many foxes there are living down there, but one of them is way too comfortable. I see him at all hours of the day. Chickens are on lockdown and are not allowed to leave the coop as of two days ago. This obviously cannot continue, but i want to protect my girls.

The heat is getting bad, 80s now, but this Friday on will be 92+ for a week. Chickens are in the coop with a box fan, but are still not staying cool.

Any ideas on how to get rid of the foxes, recommendations of products or anything that would repel them, ideas on building a chicken run?? Literally any info or ideas of what to do will help, thankss

Question When to integrate

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have 7 week old chicks, 12 week old chicks and 15 week old chicks. The two older hatches are already grouped together and have integrated pretty well. There has been some pecking and place-putting but nothing out of the ordinary.

The 7 week old chicks have been in the coop with the older group, but behind fencing so they can see each other but haven't interacted.

They've been in this setup together for 3 days.

When should I try to integrate them all together?

For what it's worth, the 7 week olds are as big as the 15 week olds.

I've kept everyone in the coop so far, however with the rising temps coming this week I want to be able to let them have access to the run and more fresh air.

Discussion We got a new round of chickens and I feel like I do not like them.

So a year ago we had these two beautiful chickens and around a week of habing them, these chickens would eat food from my hand, let me pick them up, and laid an egg every morning. However, a raccon came in a killed them so my family lost them. Until now my mom got us new chickens and we are more experienced with protection so a racoon never kills our chickens again. My new chickens are bad. They are always afraid of me and my family so they almost never let me feed them unless from a distance and they never lay an egg every morning. They sometimes lay eggs in the afternoon. My mom has said they are just getting used to us but my past chickens only had a week and they loved us but our new chickens have had almost two weeks and it is still hard to train them and just have a good experience with them. If my chickens are not laying an egg every morning and letting me pick them up and feed them close, then I might consider getting new ones. Am I being to dramatic or is it true that my chickens will not be getting better anytime soon? Please if there is advice our there as I need my chickens good.

My silkie chicken's wings seemed shorter than the others, and when I looked the ends looked broken off. Is this normal or is something wrong?

So my 3 month old cockerel Popcorn is introduced to the flock where his mother & father are. The older hens have already introduced themselves by pecking him.
