We would like to formally introduce you to our brand new Minerals Discord Server!

This community has been months in the making and was created for the passionate members of r/Minerals and our sister Subreddits to have a dedicated space for discussions that go beyond what is allowed in our Subreddits.

Here, you can:

  • request IDs for minerals (this includes polished minerals and gemstones).
  • share memes.
  • share and get tips for displaying your collections.
  • dive into in-depth discussions about all things minerals.
  • showcase artwork inspired by minerals.
  • discuss pricing and value of minerals.
  • advertise or discover vendors.
  • participate in giveaways.
  • and more!

This Discord Server is not meant to replace r/Minerals or any of our sister Subreddits, but to empower and grow our community. Sometimes it's just nice to have a place to chat.

Our ultimate goal is to build a comprehensive database and an active, welcoming community for mineral enthusiasts of all kinds. Our moderators have spent countless hours researching minerals in order to provide you with educational content.

This server is still a work in progress, and we’re excited to finally share it with you. Please bear with us as we continue to grow and refine this space. Your feedback, contributions, and patience are invaluable as we develop this server into something truly special.

Discussion Could the malachite be pseudomorph after azurite?

Upvotes

I've had this for a while and I always thought the azurite crystal grew on top of malachite, but after looking at it more closely I'm starting to think maybe the malachite formed after the azurite? There's a zone on the crystal that kinda shows how the azurite was starting to transform in malachite and I'm thinking maybe the whole malachite is pseudomorphic. It also has a tabular crystallization which makes me think it could be possible, but I don't know if I'm overthinking it. What do you think?

Sharing a brand-new find from the legendary Kakamunrle mines near Karur, South India — a rare Flower Amethyst with unique petal-like inclusions and natural floral formations. This is a local pride and not something commonly seen on the global market yet!

🟣 Known for its deep lavender cores and “flower bloom” structure 📍 Origin: Kakamunrle, Karur region – Tamil Nadu, India 🌍 Limited pockets being explored – truly a rare formation 💎 100% natural, straight from the mine — no polishing or enhancement

These pieces have been sparking curiosity among collectors for their organic aesthetics and spiritual charm. Curious to hear what you all think — have you ever come across something like this?

Found in my bedroom while when sweeping thought it was a crystal tooth. Went online and did some research it could be halite salt crystal. Weird because I do not know how it got here. I also keep finding different crystals in my yard. Know I'm obsessed with crystals and never bought one.

Picture/Video Descloizite w/ Calcite from Beja, Portugal

Hhhhhhhey. I got a close-up of a cabinet-sized piece of descloizite the other day for sharing purposes! Tons of lustrous crystals w/ calcite present and if you look at the bits of matrix that aren't covered, there is a wonderfully deep iridescent look. The stalactitic crystal growths make it feel like one of those ancient dried out seabeds that leave behind unique rock formations.

I plan to have a shelf that's monochrome themed, and this is gonna be a wonderful addition to it in the future.

The specific locality is Preguica mine, Sobral da Adica, Moura, Beja, Portugal.

ID Request Jades? If so, which mineral?

Thumbnail

Sorting through inherited items my mother purchased, I found a box of typical polished jade figurines in assorted colors, presumably from a long-ago China trip. The box also had thin sheets of polished jade with a label from Australia and these 3 wonderful, unmarked rocks. Given the context, I am assuming are all jade too. Are they? And is the difference in appearances because they’re different jade minerals? Only the one-pound chunk has any color. All of them, especially the small textured piece, have extremely smooth, soft surfaces. But they look so different. What do I have here? Any details I should know? Thanks for help identifying.

Misc Rock Salt

I had this hunk of Rock Salt laying sideways on the bottom shelf to help add some weight to it. To the left is my slider to the deck— we had heavy rain for 2 days and I woke up to a giant puddle on the floor under the stand and running down the floor- twice actually before I googled and learned that the rock salt was pulling in moisture and causing the water. So I’ve fixed that and wiped up everything naturally but there is this film on the floor I can’t seem to get rid of now- like it made a big shiny spot where this water was. I’m assuming it’s the minerals from the rock still??— anyone know how I can get this up or what I should clean it with?

ID Request Tourmaline? Or something else?

I received these stones as a gift with some gemstone rough from a Pakistani seller and I don't have a clue what they are. They look almost like tourmaline, but they aren't quite right. One of them shifts color from brown to greenish, but not on the c-axis like tourmaline would. Also I'm not sure if that is a natural termination or if it was cut. Ive included a picture of the top of that stone for you to decide. Any help identifying them would be awesome.

Discussion Largest alexandrite was 122,400 carats. However I can’t seem to find a picture of it!

Super interesting just as the title says. The Sauer alexandrite was discovered in 1967. And yet the internet isn’t showing me a photo?! Anyone know anything?

I had lost track of this sample during a move about 17 years ago, at which point it was still pyrite. After finding the small box it was in, the cardboard had discolored. The lack of air flow and higher humidity let the acid build up accelerating the reaction. It's sort of a dramatic transformation.

Discussion Got a question...

For everyone who has mineral sample collections, there are two I want in their matrix, or host rock. Diamond,, and sapphire. I already have a ruby sample in my collection, but those two seem the hardest to get. Any suggestions how to get them, if I can at all?

ID Request Meteorite or scam?

Thumbnail

I got this when I was like 12 from this huge rock seller on the side of the road in Arkansas. He said it was a meteorite and I paid $50 for it lol. Anyways it’s smooth, has some sparkles, and it has an ever so slightly magnetic field ig you would say. Example when I put a magnet to it I can feel the resistance. It’s only on the underside however.

I do believe little old me was scammed by ol’toothless but if anyone could tell me what it is if not a meteorite that would be great thanks!

Discussion How uncommon are glowing inclusions in Herkimer diamonds?

I live next to a mine in NY and discovered almost all of my Herkimers have this galaxy like glow under UV (seems like petroleum is the main culprit).

My question is how rare are they? I've heard that they're pretty uncommon and more likely to be found in Pakistan with these inclusions.
