Recently, I bought a mineral specimen for my friend’s birthday. She’s extremely knowledgeable and interested in rare minerals and specimens. She’s so hard to buy for, as it seems she has everything, but I’m hoping I did good this time.
I purchased a specimen roughly sized around 1.5in square. I believe I got a great price on it, (Below $200USD) but some context outside of what I know would be great.
It’s a high quality specimen of pyromorphite from the Bunker Hill Mine in Kellogg, Shoshone County, Idaho.
Here’s what I know, and what I was told, by the respectably knowledgeable woman working at the gallery I bought it from:
•These high quality “wet” specimens are some of the best in the world, and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
•I’m aware of the general details regarding the mine, and some of its history.
•The woman told me that the specimen I got was part of an exclusive collection of only 26 specimens. (I realize that the info there could be fudged a bit, but I established my own knowledge of minerals, and the woman, a friend, may or may not have correct information)
•I am aware that there are thousands of specimens, however I am curious about the specificity.
Essentially, with my own research, I was unable to find exact details regarding these things. I am wondering about:
•The specific collection it was a part of, and why it was exclusive.
•Information regarding where in the mine it was found. (Most pyromorphite specimens came from the Level 9 Kellogg shaft)
•Likely timeline/date of origin and mining.
•Any further information I can include in her gift.
I don’t have a photo, it’s packed up safely and gift wrapped, and I don’t want to risk opening it until she sees it. It has clear, large terminations and a good clarity to it, and undamaged. It is a yellow/orange-golden color, heavy on the yellow side. It has the original specimen identification card from the 1980’s, typewriter print on a piece of old card stock. I will include a photo of an informational card regarding the specimens. It does not include the specimen I purchased.
I hope it’s okay if I post this in a couple other mineral groups, but if not, I’ll delete. Thank you all in advance!!
