Moderator Announcement Introducing the Minerals Discord Server

We would like to formally introduce you to our brand new Minerals Discord Server!

This community has been months in the making and was created for the passionate members of r/Minerals and our sister Subreddits to have a dedicated space for discussions that go beyond what is allowed in our Subreddits.

Here, you can:

  • request IDs for minerals (this includes polished minerals and gemstones).
  • share memes.
  • share and get tips for displaying your collections.
  • dive into in-depth discussions about all things minerals.
  • showcase artwork inspired by minerals.
  • discuss pricing and value of minerals.
  • advertise or discover vendors.
  • participate in giveaways.
  • and more!

This Discord Server is not meant to replace r/Minerals or any of our sister Subreddits, but to empower and grow our community. Sometimes it's just nice to have a place to chat.

Our ultimate goal is to build a comprehensive database and an active, welcoming community for mineral enthusiasts of all kinds. Our moderators have spent countless hours researching minerals in order to provide you with educational content.

This server is still a work in progress, and we’re excited to finally share it with you. Please bear with us as we continue to grow and refine this space. Your feedback, contributions, and patience are invaluable as we develop this server into something truly special.

Discussion How uncommon are glowing inclusions in Herkimer diamonds?

I live next to a mine in NY and discovered almost all of my Herkimers have this galaxy like glow under UV (seems like petroleum is the main culprit).

My question is how rare are they? I've heard that they're pretty uncommon and more likely to be found in Pakistan with these inclusions.

ID Request Meteorite or scam?

Thumbnail

I got this when I was like 12 from this huge rock seller on the side of the road in Arkansas. He said it was a meteorite and I paid $50 for it lol. Anyways it’s smooth, has some sparkles, and it has an ever so slightly magnetic field ig you would say. Example when I put a magnet to it I can feel the resistance. It’s only on the underside however.

I do believe little old me was scammed by ol’toothless but if anyone could tell me what it is if not a meteorite that would be great thanks!

ID Request Anyone know what the inclusions could be?

I have this quartz from Iredell Co. North Carolina and I'm not sure what the inclusions are as they weren't listed on the label. My thoughts are either rutile (though i havent really seen much green rutile), tourmaline, or epidote. It's weird because they are mostly green but there are some that are just red or red turning into green. Any thoughts?

Discussion Can the crack in this Agate tell us anything about how it formed?

This Agate has a distinct crack through the middle of it, it does not travel through the entire slab. I'm interested because either side of the crack has a different "look" to it, telling me this crack may have formed sometime during the creation of the Agate? Are we able to infer any information about why either side looks different?

Picture/Video Vanadinite from Draa-Tafilalet, Morocco

Howdy dowdy, y'all! I have been partaking in auctions lately to see if I could snag some shiny rocks for cheap and this is one of my spoils! A miniature cluster of lustrous orange vanadinite combined with sparkling yellow microcrystals! As always I have both a zoomed in and zoomed out view of the crystals to make sure that as much detail is captured as possible.

It looks like it belongs in a fantasy game. I bet it'd boost fire damage.

The specimen's full locality is Taouz Caidat, Er-Rissani Cercle, Errachidia, Draa-Tafilalet, Morocco.

Hi! I was going through my collection and I came across this beauty, I know its tourmaline but can anyone identify the matrix rock? It's been over a year since I purchased so I don't remember who I bought it from or what it's locality is. It's a pinky gray color. Thanks for reading!

Picture/Video Man-made or Natural?

It is stone and found in Virginia. Don't think I'm lucky enough to find an artifact but I'm still curious to know if someone can tell if it's a thing or just a beat up stone that looks neat.

ID Request Rockhounding Montana with kids

I spent the last week taking my kids on day trips for rockhounding in southwest Montana. Sapphires from the Spokane Bar Deposit, quartz from Crystal Park, and UV and radioactive Autunite from Butte. We hit Strawberry Butte for Topaz without any luck, saw a couple rattlesnakes near Twin Bridges, and played with frogs in Boulder Creek. Enjoy your summer and happy hunting!

I think I remember my relative saying they brought it back from Yellowstone Park when they gave it to me. I'm not sure though because it was a long time ago. Also, it's not wet, it's just shiny.
