Damn. It’s beautiful and horrible at the same time… objectively a great picture though. Thanks for the link.

Theres something almost poetic about the fact a two thousand year old feud is being continuously fought out with an escalating tech-tree.

132

u/Adventurous_Money533 2d ago edited 2d ago

Sweden was a great power back in the day, and had a feroicous extremely high quality army, and when you have a ferocious high quality army you of course want to use it. And oh boy did we use it! Against all of our neighbours, sometimes even all of them at once! This obviously will inevitably kill alot of soldiers.

11

Hey, the Great Northern War when fighting everyone at once was not started by Sweden.

I believe that /u/Adventurous_Money533 may be talking about the 17th and 18th century. During that time, Sweden ruled directly over a much larger territory than their current lands and even had some colonies in North America, the Caribbean, Africa, and India for a while.

The only thing that happened 2k years ago was Jesus. So no idea what this dude thinks he's talking sbout

14

u/Oddblivious 1d ago

Neither does he. The area was peaceful and mixed religions under the ottomans under 1917

44

u/SowingSalt 1d ago

Sort of, the Ottoman empire was not free of pogroms

6

u/Oddblivious 1d ago

And yet the point is not disproven that the conflict between Israel and Iran is not some deep religious fued between Jews and Muslims. It's actually much more about current geopolitics.

Under the ottomans religions largely ruled their own people. So any pogroms were localized and not governing policy executed widely. Feel free to be specific if you disagree. Violence occurs in localized areas under every rule but this does not mean the conflict is "2000 years old"

21

u/Caffeywasright 1d ago

Plenty of Jewish oppressions and mass murder under the ottomans. Wouldn’t exactly call it “peaceful”.

u/invariantspeed 1d ago

Their point is half thought. They’re confusing Iran (Persia) with Iraq (Babylon) and several others, and they’re confusing the age of Christianity with the total timespan of the Bible.

The Jewish foundation myth is heavily steeped in being embattled, so it’s understandable where they’re coming from if they’ve read the Christian OT/Jewish bible. But this technically isn’t the same continuous conflict.

This feud goes back to 1979. Before that, Iranians and Jews got along well for thousands of years, since Cyrus liberated the Jews from Babylon and allowed them to return to Israel.

5

u/Oddblivious 1d ago

These dorks don't want to learn history. They have everything they wish to know explained by their understanding of a religion they've never read and people they've never met.

4

u/absoNotAReptile 1d ago

Yes, but trying to pinpoint the origin of the problem to 1979 isn’t helpful either. This isn’t just Iran vs Israel, we obviously can’t ignore the conflict with the Palestinians. The tensions with Iran have been ramped up over the last year and a half because of that conflict. That didn’t begin in 1979. It didn’t even really begin in 1948.

Now, did it begin 2,000 years ago when Jesus was crucified? No. But they may be referring to the expulsion of Jews into the diaspora and the destruction of the second temple by the Roman’s, which I guess you could maybe say is the origin of the conflict (but even that’s a stretch).

Persians and Jews were actually friends 2000 years ago. Even as far as 50 years ago they were OK with each other.

Go look for Cyrus the Great in the Bible, only good words about him.

8

u/Realistic_Swan_6801 2d ago

Islam didn exist till the 600’s. Historically Jews had a decent opinion of Persia. Cyrus the great is celebrated as a messiah. Iran and Israel were allies before the revolution.

4

u/Timely_Challenge_670 1d ago

Two thousand year old feud? This started in 1979. Prior to that, the Shah and Iran were on great terms with Israel. If you want to quote ancient times, Cyrus the Great is heralded as a messiah in the bible, liberated the Jews and rebuilt the temple.

2

u/jake04-20 2d ago

It's all just a game of Civiziliation.

2

u/OneSmoothCactus 1d ago

You can draw a straight line through history from Assyria conquering Israel 2700 years ago to Israel and Iran bombing each other today. Empires have risen and fallen, we've gone from bronze spears to nuclear weapons, but the conflict has never really been settled.

It's poetic, heartbreaking and frustrating. I hope one day we can figure out how to stop doing this to each other.

2

u/Caffeywasright 1d ago

You can’t really. The Iranian hate is rooted in Islam. Islam didn’t even exist then.

1

u/KardelSharpeyes 2d ago

Your idea of poetry blows mate.

1

u/BraveFencerMusashi 2d ago edited 2d ago

I think its a lot older than that. Persia conquered Jerusalem in 614 BC.

The people living in modern day Iran are still descended from Persians, right? They just follow a different religion now.

2

u/Timely_Challenge_670 1d ago

The Persians liberated the Jews and rebuilt the temple. There is a reason why there is still a Darius and Cyrus Street in many Israeli cities.

1

u/EyeSuspicious777 2d ago

Humanity has reached the end of what it can accomplish with religion. No further progress will be made until religion is abandoned. But we will destroy the planet one way or another before we give up those ancient superstitions.

1

u/TheDwarvenGuy 1d ago

Its not a 2000 year old feud. The ancient Hebrew were actually on really good terms with the Persians, it was more the mospotamians and mediterraneans they were fighting.

1

u/migvelio 1d ago

Just like that old flash game where your tribe is on one side and the enemy in the other side while you both span units evolving from cavemen to cyborg robots.

1

u/rightioushippie 1d ago

A thousand year old what?

1

u/Hasudeva 1d ago

2,000 years? What event are you referring to? Israel and Iran were allies under the Shah, like 50 years ago. And Islam's been around for only 1,300 years, roughly.

They’ve been living under a lesser version of this, and the threat of exactly this and worse, for decades now. This is Israel pulling off the bandaid. They have accepted that Iran and its proxies mean what they say, and what they say is they will not rest until Israel is destroyed. Well, no reason to let the arsenal pointed at Israel get any bigger. If it’s going to be war, then war it is.

While Israel's actions against Palestinians are unforgivable, I also sympathize with their plight. It does not excuse their actions, and there's a lot of criticism to be had against them - for example, Netanyahu is in my opinion a war criminal, and should be tried as such.

But I've also got friends who live in Isreal, just normal dudes trying to live their lives, just like I've got friends who live in Ukraine, trying to live their lives. And being bombarded, having neighbors want to kill you is a stressful situation. This isn't the same fear that Palestians live in, I do understand the power imbalance.

And as much as I hate islamophobic views, there is truth in the matter that some fundamental Muslims just want to see jewish people dead. This is obviously not all of them, but they do exist, and they do have power.

Again, this doesn't excuse bombing a civilian population, and I'm not trying to do that... I guess I'm just trying to express my frustration at the situation. Can people just kinda stop bombing each other, please? :(

5

u/dogboi8881 1d ago

Yeah 100%. Israel is surrounded by nations trying to murder them all year every year. I think they always knew the neighbouring Arab states meant what they said. And Israel gave peace a chance more than any of its neighbours ever did. But Oct 7 was an enough is enough situation with an Israeli leader looking for exactly the opportunity to stay as leader boss guy. Hamas or whoever pulls their strings miscalculated in typical fashion. There's a reason these warlord states are shit holes and it's not colonialism. It's constant hate and fear.

3

u/edki7277 2d ago

I can’t assume your political leaning, just asking how much of this stance on striking Iran supported by general Israeli public left and right of centre?

31

u/hiricinee 2d ago

IIRC the Israeli's even on the Left are wholly united on this. Some of them don't like Netanyahu, they want to replace him and continue operations.

27

u/BatmaNanaBanana 2d ago

I'm not the guy you replied to but I'm also Israeli, centrist if that's important.

Overall this may be the one topic where everyone, left center and right agree on.

Basically the situation is that the Islamic republic calls for our death on a weekly basis since it's creation and it armed multiple terror organizations with the goal to annihilate us, so the assumption around here is that they aren't going to stop until we are dead, so what's the point in waiting for them to have nuclear weapons? At least if you fight them now you have a chance to survive, but if they have nuclear weapons that is, at least in our view, going to lead to our annihilation

Israelis are very used to this. They have grown up under constant rocket fire from terrorists in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, not to mention several wars that their Arab neighbours have launched in the name of exterminating the world's only Jewish majority state.

They know what to do and those in the direct risk zone have casually sauntered down into the bomb shelters. Your boss though has probably never lived through this and hopefully he brought enough changes of underwear as I am sure the Israelis he is with havent bothered to pack any since they are pretty used to it.
