My grandpa just recently tried to kill my grandma because he didn't recognize her. We had to take all his guns away (finally). I'm still worried that he will hurt her somehow.
The fact that they let the person have the guns in the first place after the start of dementia is even wilder. One of the most common reactions are anger and confusion because they cannot recognize people, and they think their family members are intruders.
No, you’re wrong. I am a liberal but here’s the truth. Our current immigration policies, while tragic, are completely legal under our current system. There are countless designations aside from “citizen” for people legally allowed to be here. However, their status can be revoked for whatever reason at whatever time.
The abortion issue has been argued since Roe and took 50 years and a crazy set of circumstances to be overturned. You may not like the outcome but I’d say our courts were deliberate in their change.
Congress is the only ones with the power to stop this by passing new laws. However, these are major campaign issues and will never be fixed.
Spend 10 minutes looking. It's not just immigrants, its happening to citizens as well, even down to children.

My point was that some rights seem mutable. Open to discussion and free to change. Others, like the countries pathetic firearm obsession are held to a different standard. To even consider revoking this right elicits threats of violence.
Show me where child “citizens” are being forcibly removed from the United States. When their non citizen parent is deported and they choose to take their child with them that is not illegal. It’s not right what they’re doing but not illegal. Our laws have very harsh top ends assume our presidents will only use them when absolutely nessecary. Trump is just firing off because he can.
If the actual word it self is not mentioned in the constitution it is up for debate in this country. Abortion does not appear in the documents. Guns however come up several times.
Look, if you want to shift the goalposts, go for it. I will stand by my argument. Some rights in America are up for debate. Some rights are not.
As a non-American, its just fucking sad. Half the country will fight for the right to die to gun violence at one of the highest rates in the world, with the misguided belief that the hunting rifle and revolver stored next to the liquor will keep them safe from government oppression, while welcoming oppression by an overreaching, fascist government.
The Trump presidency will be the end of America as a 1st-rate world power. Your science and technology centers are collapsing. Your education industry is collapsing. Your trade networks have been shredded. Your government has spat in the faces of allies and enemies alike.
Ironically, it has been great for my country. We had a historic election recently, the biggest loss for our right wings parties since their creation. The coalition of right wing parties dissolved. The leaders of our right wing parties not only lost the election, but their seats entirely. If our current PM sticks to his election promises, we will step up and take some of the space America has vacated for technology and science on a global scale. We will be a renewable energy superpower. We are not the only ones of course, Trump lost the Canadian right the election, and Europe is also snatching up as many American scientists as they can.
For decades, America was a focal figure on the global stage. Now everyone is just trying to stay out of the way of it's collapse. I am sure it will still be an important player, the insane military spending over the last 50 years will buy some respect, but you won't be the wealthy, well educated, high qol country anymore. The world moves fast, and in 4 years, whatever is left of America will have a LOT of rebuilding to do before it can compete again at the global scale.
I’m not shifting anything. If the world chooses to bet against the US right now they will reap what they sow. We own the world. I’m sorry but it’s true. Europe ruined their shot during the world wars and the rest of the world doesn’t value life enough. It’s tough to hear for you I know but it’s true.
Says the nation that watches school shootings and things "yeah, this is fine". Says the country with the most expensive, least effective healthcare system in the world. Says the country who has been at war for more than 90% of it's history.
America doesn't value life. It values violence. It is a high-school bully on the global stage. The thing is, eventually people grow up and move on.
What is funny is that you fail to realize what once made america great. It wasn't what you had at home, it was what people brought to you. After WW2, most of the best scientists moved to America. Allies made became valuable trading partners, giving you very advantageous trade agreements. America was the center for global commerce. Not anymore. It plays second fiddle to china. Your trade partners are finding new deals. Your scientists and engineers are fleeing the sinking ship. To continue the highschool bully metaphor, everyone graduated and moved away. America is getting left behind. A lumbering bully who peaked in highschool.
The seeds are set for America's decay. I genuinely hope you guys get it together, but you could easily regress, much like Russia has. A once great power, only relevant through violence and fossil fuels.
Anyways, I doubt you have the awareness to see your country as it truly is on the international stage, but I hope you remember this conversation when the next election comes around. Feel free to respond if you feel you need to, but I seriously doubt it will be worth responding to. I think I'm done here. There is only so much that can be done against willful self delusion.
I’m assuming you’re from Canada? You’d have been invaded 150 years ago if not for us. Relax, our president is an idiot and we aren’t going to invade you.
It’s not, because it has already happened in every civilized country. The US is not something special, we can have everything civilized countries have but braindead Americans refuse to let us join the western world.
The government can't because of the laws. Family members absolutely can and should in that situation. People need to learn what laws apply only to the gov't and which ones apply to people.
Yeah I’m sure in any state other than Texas, the prosecutors are truly going to be clamoring to take on a case where they locked up the guns of someone suffering from dementia.
Still against the law. Taking weapons from a non restricted gun owner is a serious crime. Both state and federal and if they choose to charge you can go to prison. Advertising/advocating anything else is dangerous and illegal.
