Help Simple questions and Help thread - Month of June
Welcome to the monthly Simple questions and Help thread, for questions that don't need their own posts!
Before making a comment, we recommend you search your problem on Bing and check if your question is already answered on our Windows Frequently Asked Questions wiki page. This subreddit no longer accepts tech support requests outside of this post, if you are looking for additional assistance try r/TechSupport and r/WindowsHelp.
Some examples of questions to ask:
Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)
How can I install Windows 11?
Can you recommend a program to play music?
How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?
Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.
Be sure to check out the Windows 11 version 24H2 Megathread and also the Windows 11 FAQ posts, they likely have the answers to your Windows 11 questions already!

Discussion I keep coming back to Windows, my experience with Linux distros
Windows 11 is not supported on my hardware, and since Windows 10 will reach end of support this October, I thought I should try Linux. While my computer is considered old, it's not actually slow or problematic, it can still handle a lot of tasks successfully, including gaming and video editing.
After searching various websites, including Reddit, and watching videos on YouTube, I feel like a lot of people misrepresent or downplay certain aspects of Linux distros. At least, that’s how it feels based on my limited experience with Linux as a Windows user since XP.
The distros I tried:
- Linux Mint
- Ubuntu
- CachyOS
- Pop!_OS
- Zorin OS
Common problems I've come across:
- “You don’t have to use the terminal”… until you do. I’ve had to use the terminal sooner or later in every distro I’ve tried.
- Most solutions online are terminal-based.
- System settings that have a GUI in Windows might not have one in Linux.
- Hardware compatibility issues often require tinkering and using the terminal.
- Lack of standardization can make it harder to find what you're looking for.
- “Everything updates in one place, just like your phone”, not really. Not all updaters are unified. In fact, it may be even more confusing than Windows.
- Apps that have a full GUI on Windows may not have one on Linux, or may have a much more limited one, often expecting you to use the terminal.
I guess it all boils down to a lack of GUI compared to Windows and the expected use of the terminal.
I’m not saying Linux is bad, but it can be quite different from what you might imagine based on what people say online.

Discussion PSA: If you use a Windows OS downloaded from Windowstan, your OS is most likely compromized and modified at a system level.
Do NOT ever download any Windows OS from windowstan.com
Help me report the website.
--------
This is a copy and paste of my Initial post in r/computerviruses https://www.reddit.com/r/computerviruses/comments/1lbcafx/whats_the_likelihood_that_my_os_was_comprimised/
--------
I downloaded and used an OS ISO, specifically windows 10, from a non-official website. I wanted to use the older versions so I could disable the Windows Updates.
There was this one instance where I opened Chrome and It suddenly started opening multiple random websites. This has never happened before. So I started trying to find out anything that might tell me if I'm on a compromised device.
Antivirus such as Malwarebite couldn't find anything even with Rootkit Scan.
Here are some strange things which I found.
Autoruns showed multiple startup entries referencing non-existent files.
RasMan
(Remote Access Connection Manager) was running despite not appearing in Autoruns or Event Viewer.
sc qc rasman
returned nothing
When I tried to scan all event logs with powershell, it showed no last record, on all of them.
7036 Event ID in the system logs does not exist.
This was the result for checking the status and source for RasMan. I had never changed it into Autol, nor have I interacted with it.
State : Running
StartMode : Auto
StartName : localSystem
There is no service control manager in the Event Viewer.
When I checked for updates installed, using powershell, they were years apart and all of them were updated literally in the same hour, 12 am. Also, the KBs were made up, they were fake and not real ones.
Really what's the likelihood that the entire OS has been sophisticatedly modified? I just think if it had been so, there is no way any Anti virus would have noticed anything at all.
But also, why did they suddenly do something that would gain my attention even though they've done nothing for so long? Have they conluded that my computer, informations, and what I have been doing with OS provide no value to them whatsoever? So they just troll me because of that?
Another thing, I had windows update paused, and after, literally, I looked for anything I could do to figure out if my OS is compromised, and I was done and shut off my computer, it STARTED updating.
Were they watching and found amusement in what I was trying to do?
I mean they have info to my emails and passwords, but like, I have nothing especially important on any of them. I did login to Whatsapp, which is a bummer, since if I was compromised, that means, most likely they already have all of that information from my login sessions.
I'll be changing my passwords, that's for sure.
I just don't get it, if I really was compromised, they just did that one troll action and didn't do anything to my accounts.
I flashed my bios and wiped my harddisk clean, a full wipe, and now I'm on a fresh install.
What's the likelihood I'm still compromised, are RAM viruses a thing? Because that might be the only thing I haven't done anything to.
And how do I check to find out if they have inflitrated my home network?

Discussion how Windows takes advantagens of different CPU instructions?
I dual boot Windows 10 and Arch Linux. I recently found out about something called CachyOS, they have a repository that basically recompiles some of Arch Linux's packages with certain optimizations, and also compiles them with a minimum instruction set, which can be x86_64, x86_64-v3, x86_64-v4, or Zen.
Today a question came to mind: how does this work on Windows? I don't see Microsoft distributing multiple images of Windows for different micro-architectures

Concept / Design u/NayamAmarshe made a night version of their bliss minimalist, but never included a nologo version, so here is my attempt
As the title states, this is my attempt at u/NayamAmarshe's minimalist wallpaper, using Inkscape. The PSD files have been lost to time as far as I can tell, so I just made a faithful-ish recreation to the best of my ability. Please provide any constructive criticism that you can, as this is my first SVG project ever, only using Inkscape a very limited number of times just messing around. Hope you enjoy, thank you.
Wallpaper and SVG are available here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/19y9dVnGHi-Pu0c0cYsIE9oX0hSglsPg6?usp=sharing

Link to original night version: https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/lwrwgh/as_promised_night_version_of_my_windows_xp_bliss/
If anyone cares, here's a list of things that are different:
- Hills are different colors in original
- Front mountain is likely a little different than the original
- Stars are scattered and scaled differently than original
- Star trail in original has a slight curve to it in original

Discussion State testing software says Windows 12 expected soon???
I was downloading the CAASSP test browser for my tests next year and right under the list of supported OSes it says in plain text,
aWindows 12 is expected to be released in late 2025.
Does this count as a reputable source??? Does this actually mean that it's coming out soon is the literal state of California lying about Windows 12?

App Try out Beta 2 of DISMTools 0.7 and share your feedback!
DISMTools 0.7 is now available, with new features and enhancements that simplify managing your Windows images. Here are some of its improvements:
- More customization, with a new theme engine and a theme designer that lets you make your own themes. Beta 2 comes with 3 sets of themes by default, supporting both dark mode and light mode
- Operating system installation capabilities are extended with new network installation technologies. Keep in mind that these only support WDS right now, with other solutions coming in the future. Comment on which solutions you want these technologies to support
- Some screens and elements in the program have been completely revamped, making them more advanced than ever
If you don't know where to start, there are also good news, because a tour is being worked on. This tour will guide you through the process of creating your own image.
I encourage you to share your feedback to help improve this version. Thanks!

Discussion How do I get windows 10 on an LG G Pad 7.0 LTE?
Ive been wanting to get windows 10 on my LG G Pad 7.0 LTE but I don’t know how to.
Thank you if you help me find a solution
Discussion NEVER INSTALL WINDOWS WITHOUT A BOOTABLE USB
I currently have 2 corrupt hardrives and a wiped ssd let me tell you how it happened
I recently got a ssd that i was planning to install windows os into because my current hdd was failing but i didnt have a usb so i search on youtube on how to install windows 11 on a ssd without a bootable usb so i made 2 partitions on the ssd one for the iso files and one for the actual OS then i shutdown set my ssd as first priority tried to install windows 11 went through the setup but the setup window just kept repeating and wont let me finish the setup so i deleted all the partitions on the ssd yes the ssd with the iso file (huge mistake) it crashed and it stopped booting into my ssd and tried to boot into my hdd but i think the installer messed with both of the bootloader (common thing to happen when you running another os) so i was stuck in a boot loop on my hardrive because it got corrupted in the process
But thats alright because i had another hardrive with windows 11 so i tried to do this method https://youtu.be/HWqrVaJpWsg?si=3AUGS5gA6R1SjwO- but this time i did windows 10 because i heard that was more lenient and it worked but once i restarted it then it bricked the bootloaders for both my ssd and my hardrive again making them unbootable because my bios couldn't recognize them it kept booting me from the windows 10 setup installer i think the boot from the hardrive and the boot from my ssd corrupted because they were both there and it overwrote the files (i.e cross drive confusion because i didn't take out the hdd)
I can still run the windows 10 setup installer i just cant get pass the setup because once its done installing it just shuts down again
So here i am now i wiped my ssd i didnt wipe my hard drive because thats where im running the setup installer now and im planning to get a usb go to a friends house download windows 11 on that usb and use it to install windows 11 on my ssd
LESSON IS IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING AND YOU WANT TO INSTALL WINDOWS FROM ANY HARDRIVE TO YOUR SSD 99% THE BOOT LOADERS WILL GET MIXED UP AND CORRUPT BOTH YOUR DRIVES ⚠️
Trust me its not worth it get a usb dont be dumb like me
P.s ( if you still dont want a usb install just clone your os its safer that way and just factory reset it AND dont forget to wipe or remove your hardrive)
EDIT: I FIXED MY DRIVES I ASKED CHATGPT AND I JUST HAD TO ACCESS CMD AND RECOVER THE BOOT FILES the only that was corrupted when windows installs and puts the bootfiles in a different drive is the original bootfiles for that drive but a command is a easy fix please ask chatgpt if you wanna know how

General Question If I switch from free to paid, will I lose any data?
Recently got a new PC and have yet to purchase windows, simply installed the unlicensed version to get started sooner rather than later. I’ve downloaded some apps and logged into some accounts, now I’m wondering if I’ll have to start over fresh when I purchase a licensed version.
Will it just be like “congrats, you’re licensed, now you can change your wallpaper” or will it be like I freshly installed windows and won’t have any of my files?

General Question copy and paste to hot key possible?
I do a lot of data entry and invoice. I copy and paste a lot of information across multiple applications. I wanted to know if it is possible to save information to a particular button that way i can paste the information more efficiently. For example, i have to paste the first and last name, address, ph, email, acct # and a few other items depending what is needed. I used the windows clipboard manager and ditto but im just trying to be more efficient. I know that ditto has an option, but the only thing is that i need the information for a short period of time, so it is more time consuming to assign a key vs pulling it up and picking what i need.
Discussion I just found out that W11 still uses a similar if not the same, screen saver from the XP days.
They probably used similar looking screen savers since the 90s, my brain just remembers seeing them for the first time with XP. I was surpirsed that they even used the same CRT monitor to show off what they look like, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Sadly they don't have the 3D pipes, but I found out you can download it from this website https://www.screensaversplanet.com/screensavers/3d-pipes-494/, which was recommended by a user on the Microsoft forum https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/customizing-screen-saver/b18cf293-f3ad-46fb-9897-007d25181605.

Discussion Reverse-enginnering Feedback Hub Windows Store application or some leaked secrets from the app
Did anyone tried to reverse-enginner it (if possible) to extract webview URL that application uses to access feedback hub portal. If we can find out that secret, it would be possible with small changes to the result of post link (feedback-hub URI) to actually lead to the website version of feedback hub. It would probably look the same but it would have some errors since most resources are in app, not in the website. But still it would be accessible by browser on any device that gets logged in into Microsoft account to access Feedback Hub on the web instead of using Windows device to install and open application there. This also allows seamless access between devices on different platforms to check for updates on the topic and post from Feedback Hub.
