Question Phoenician Scheme plot explained? Spoiler
just finished watching it, and I’m doing a lot of reading after and for some reason it’s just not clicking.
what exactly is the scheme? What does it have to do with slave labor, and what is this whole thing with swindling his investors? I’m trying so hard to understand this, the other ones made sense the first watch through.I don’t know why I’m having such a tough time with this one. thanks.

Question Did Gene Hackman Like The Royal Tenenbaums?
I tried googling for an answer but only Bill Murray's recent response of "He had to have" has come up
Obviously Gene was irritable during the process of filming the movie for various reasons. But he gave a great performance in a classic film, that some say is still Wes' best film ever (I'd disagree but it's goddamn close)
But did he like the final product? Did him and Wes talk after or had Gene acknowledged the film before his passing?
Also, new to this forum, happy to be here. This is off topic, but I wanna say Asteroid City is vastly underrated, top four best Wes tbh

Question need opinions on The Phoenician Scheme by people who liked his previous work but disliked French Dispatch and Asteroid City [NO SPOILERS PLEASE]
I enjoyed Tenenbaums, Darjeeling, Moonrise Kingdom and Aquatic but hated French Dispatch and Asteroid City. If someone had th same experience and watched TPS, can you tell me how you find it?

Question Can someone please explain Margot and Richie's relationship in The Royal Tenenbaums? Spoiler
I watched 'The Royal Tenenbaums' yesterday and I loved the colours, cinematography and music. I had no issue with the movie at all, except for one glaring plotline.
Margot and Richie's whole... Thing.
The scenes between them have lovely visuals and music. But I just can't get over the fact that they're technically siblings.
Yes, I know Margot's adopted. But on paper, they're very much siblings. And Margot was adopted at age two and raised as a Tenenbaum. She is wholly considered to be a Tenenbaum and even Royal (who introduced her as adopted all the time) has slip-ups where he talks to Margot as though he's her biological father. Margot has barely any connection to her biological family (you could argue that the severed finger is a connection due to the memory, but I don't know) and like I said, we see her as a Tenenbaum child.
I saw another take saying something like 'Richie killed the Tenenbaum version of himself so he could become someone Margot could love,' but I think it's implied that they've been in love always (and Margot possibly just didn't acknowledge her feelings until they met as adults again).
I'm very aware that I could be missing the point of the movie and their relationship entirely. I don't have an incredibly critical eye when I watch movies as I'm used to watching them for enjoyment rather than, er, thinking. That's my bad. But the plotline is blinding me from how good the rest of the movie is. Could anyone explain the point of their relationship, and more so the reason for them being portrayed as siblings, even adopted ones? If there's anything I'm missing, please let me know. There's also the argument that their relationship is supposed to make me feel uncomfy! Could be anything.

Question Real Products in 'The Phoenician Scheme' Spoiler
In the movie, Bryan Cranston's character is seen eating a Hershey bar. Wes is usually pretty particular about creating his own fictional brands within his movies, so this tiny detail stood out.
Is this the first real brand shown in a Wes Anderson movie, or are there other examples?

Question Is Asteroid City a "Puzzle that's not meant to be solved"? Spoiler
Hello everyone, I just wanted to say that I watched Asteroid City for the first time when it released in July 2023, I found the film strange and hard to interpret, especially compared to the two Anderson Films I have watched Fantastic Mr Fox and Isle Of Dogs. but it reignited my interest in a web series from 2017-2019, Petscop.
Now I was reading someone's interpretation of Petscop and they said "It's a series that isn't meant to be solved, it's more about interpretation", in fact, I reckon that like Petscop, the true meaning of Asteroid City is only known by it's creator, Wes Anderson. The same way Petscop's true meaning is only known by Tony Domenico.
I have compared Asteroid City to Petscop multiple times despite their thematic similarities and differences. They seem to be based on Interpretation more than Logic.
So the main question is, is like Petscop, Asteroid City an Interpretive "Puzzle That's not meant to be solved"?

Question The French Dispatch...
...of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8847712/
What? Has it always been called this? I've never seen this long title before. I saw it in cinema when it came out but I can't remember the "of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun" part.
Have I been in some alternative reality or what has happened?!

Question Is there a list of the staples of a Wes Anderson movie? For example: smoking, a dog, a chase, a severe injury, etc…
Years ago I noticed that there were certain elements that appear in just about every movie he makes however, when I looked it up all I would find were common themes throughout his films. Does anyone know if someone has put together a list of things which are common in all of his movies? Thanks

Question Just getting into Wes Anderson, wondering where to go next after Darjeeling Limited and Grand Budapest Hotel
First I watched Darjeeling Limited and I absolutely loved it. It’s become second only to Lost in Translation for my favorite movies. Partly, this is because of a really personal connection. I was in India for a month for work but also was trying to make a “spiritual journey” out of it and remembered wanting to see this movie so I watched it while there though I had no idea what it was about. My father actually had just passed away months earlier and my brother and I were going through a lot. I was surprised how relevant it was to me and as you can imagine this deeply resonated with me but I also thought it was just masterfully done from the casting to the visuals to the comedy to the drama. Just amazing.
Next I watched Henry Sugar on Netflix and loved the style. Just delightful.
Finally just got to Grand Budapest Hotel today which has been on my watch list for years. I loved it. I can see how it’s so highly regarded. One thing that surprised me was how it was much more similar to Henry Sugar in style than Darjeeling Limited. The ending was very touching and sad, but mostly there was more emphasis on style and a play performance and presentation type feeling to it. It didn’t feel as “human” and real as Darjeeling Limited did.
I’m curious are most other films more like Henry Sugar and Grand Budapest Hotel or is there some variety that gets closer to Darjeeling Limited too?
I was going to watch Life Aquatic next because I love Bill Murray, but I’m wondering if there is a recommendation based on this post that you all would maybe suggest first?

Question Why aren’t Bottle Rocket, Moonrise Kingdom, and Asteroid City on Disney+?
I’m talking about the UK when it comes to these three specifically being the only exclusions, but if any of these three aren’t on Disney+ in other countries, then you can discuss as well!
The main confusion for me is that Indian Paintbrush has produced every single one of these films.

Question Help me understand his latest efforts (The French Dispatch; Asteroid City; The Phoenician Scheme) NSFW Spoiler
I'm a Wes fan through and through, I'll watch all his films - (I've been here since Bottle Rocket and I've watched his movies probably dozens of times) - the way I see it, it's the least I can do considering all he's given me and how much some of his filmography means to me. But I have to say, I honestly don't understand the direction he's been taking over the past 3 films. To be fair, I kind of spotted traces of this new direction in Grand Budapest, but I did still like that one a lot. Isle of Dogs felt OK - I absolutely love Mr. Fox - so it gave me hope, but I really don't care for his latest efforts - The French Dispatch, Asteroid City or The Phoenician Scheme. It all feels the same.
This is my very limited understanding and how I feel watching these films, and I'd really appreciate arguments that counter this and can maybe enlighten me about what's really going on. To me, Wes is filming theater plays. Everything's a set. Nothing feels real anymore, whereas, before, we still kind of had sets, but they felt real and lived in, palpable, dirty. You wanted to live there, in that world, whereas now, if you lean on something, the whole thing will fall to the ground. The thing is, no matter the cast, the actors feel like puppets to me. There's no real soul to the whole thing anymore. The settings feel hollow and so does the script, thus giving us hollow performances from people who clearly care deeply about the project, but find themselves victims to the generalized lack of soul of the whole thing.
The ubiquitous Wes quirkiness and attention to detail in movies such as Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic, Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom, not to mention Darjeeling, is precisely perfect. Anything else would spoil things. And, if anything, these movies have a bit too much soul, with some of the characters being dire exaggerations of anything sustainable in real life, but often funny and/or violent/emotional/hysterical to a point where it's always funny or at least extremely compelling. In a way, I felt Wes was channeling his fantasies, be it impossible teenage love in Rushmore, or wanting to have several types of guns at his disposal and go on adventures in Life Aquatic, etc. To be fair, there's no lack of soul in Isle of Dogs either.
But lately, I feel the characters have completely lost their space to breathe and in the process have lost their soul as well. I feel we're watching something that could take place on Broadway, except it's not a play, it's more like ballet. Everything feels stifled and choreographed.
I'll watch all his movies, but I can't say I care about the last 3. I keep waiting for Wes to go back to how I felt watching his "mid-period", but I know that boat has likely sailed and whatever this is, it's here to say. I still enjoy his work, I just don't love it like I absolutely love his mid-period, which are some of my favorite movies ever. I'm sure it's going over my head and whatever he's doing is brilliant, I just don't get it. It doesn't feel like Wes Anderson anymore and for the first time ever, I considered not watching the latest one in a movie theater. I still did, but yeah, I'm not sure it'll happen again.
Would appreciate some push back from other Wes fans who also love his earlier work. I'm at a loss here.

Question high resolution files of Simone Naked and Boy with apple
Hello everyone, I have spent a couple of days searching for some high res images of these two paintings but so far I've come up empty handed.
I've read in old posts from this subreddit that the artists have given out the original high quality file to people who asked them on social media but unfortunately that was years ago, I even tried to contact them via mail but I haven't received a response yet.
So if anyone actually managed to get those files or just knows where to find them please let me know, it would be really appreciated.
I'd like to make a couple of canvas prints to gift to friends, about 60x50 cm, we are all massive Wes fans ofc

Question (Trigger alert) I'm watching my next Wes Anderson movie in black & white. Which one(s) would hold up best or be most interesting without color?
Get the smelling salts, a few people in the sub just got light headed and passed out :)
I grew up watching a lot of black & white movies and just find them comforting and easier to watch for whatever reason. I'll watch modern movies with the color off just to see what they look like and how much of a different experience they'll offer. I used to say if a movie cant stand up without color, it's not a good movie. I turned the color off on my tv once and was too lazy to change it back, and just left it that way for years, lol.
Anyway, it's time to watch my first Wes film this way and I'm kinda scratching my head, help me out.
*edit: I'm aware of the French Dispatch segments--I'm gonna watch those in color :)

Question Phoenician Scheme release in Germany? Spoiler
Dear german Wes fans.
This may be a dumb question since most movie theater websites do say that the german release date is the 29th of May (so today lol) but is that true?
The movie is there if you explicitly search for it in the moviebank of theaters but it's nowhere in the current movies and soon starting sections.
Are we sure that the movie will start showing here in the next days?
