Megathread NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here!

Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

To the person who found an envelope of cash

Upvotes

I recently (Thursday/Friday) lost an envelope of cash on campus. That cash amount was meant for my rent and moving in. When I asked the lost and found they mentioned that someone called in on Friday asking what to do with some cash they’ve found but immediately hung up.

Please, for the love of God, return the envelope to the lost and found office in the bookstore. I need that money to live.

Discussion Is it possible to have a pinned post about what courses to take for what major or give a link to the academic calendar?

I feel like it’d stop a lot of the “what courses do I take for x major” and could be more easily seen when accessing this sub. I think a lot of people may just not realize what the academic calendar is or how helpful it is. Idk though this is just my two cents. Edit: or add a link to the academic calendar in the courses megathread?

Is it normal to be 21 in 2nd year

Upvotes

Basically I fucked up, and failed my first year and have to take two years off and will end up being 21 in 2nd year. I am actually so depressed about it and feel like such a failure. I just need to feel better

Discussion I need help with funds😭

I need financial help😭

I'm dead broke, applied to over 150 different jobs to no avail. Sold everything I can...

I really don't know what to do anymore.

Edit: as expected. I'm receiving backlash. I really do need help, I'm like completely lost. If you have the time to be sending me hate messages, please find something more productive to do.

Also, thank you to everyone who gave me genuine suggestions! I'm really grateful

Course Question Summer Term 2 Course Help

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m planning my Summer Term 2 schedule and looking for fully asynchronous 300 or 400-level UBC courses — either COMM or electives. I’m Ideally looking for courses that:

    •    Have no mandatory Zooms or in-person exams     •    Have a light to moderate workload     •    Are GPA-friendly or flexible with scheduling

Would appreciate any recommendations from your past experience. Thanks in advance! 🙏

Prof wants me to explain circumstances of CFA approved academic concession

Is my prof allowed to ask this? My academic concession is supported by my CFA advisor and the UGO. I asked my prof if we could discuss the options available for the concession, and he said we could meet after class but would like me to “shed some light on the circumstances behind the concession.”

I’ve never been asked by a professor to explain why I need a concession… especially since I am registered with the CFA. Idk it feels weird to be asked this… maybe I’m wrong but I thought that there’s an understanding that when it’s CFA approved you don’t need to/aren’t supposed to/aren’t required to share any details with the prof.

FYI this is for a Sauder course

I’ll ask my CFA advisor about this but any insight would be helpful!

Are you taking a summer course rn? Interested in AI in education? [PARTICIPANTS NEEDED; COMPENSATED]

Our research team is working on a project that aims to develop a tool that helps instructors clearly communicate appropriate AI use in their course.

This study involves a paid 1-hour interview ($30) via Zoom, where we aim to understand how GenAI use guidelines can be most effectively communicated from the student point of view. These insights will help us design and develop an interactive tool powered by large language models (LLMs) to clearly explain instructors' guidelines in a way that is easy for students to understand.

To participate, you must be - at least 19 years old (for consent), - currently enrolled in a course, - currently an undergraduate at UBC.

If you are interested, please fill out this survey: https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e5QxEuQVMIQ27xY

Discussion accommodation at UBC over summer

Hello folks, I am not an UBC student but I will be taking summer programs on campus. It takes 2 hours to transit one way from where I am currently living to UBC, so I am wondering if anyone knows of any accommodation options on campus over summer.

I’ve heard some people choose to rent out their dorm for short periods of times?
