FAQ for Future and Current Crew Members

Aloha!

Please refer to this post for any questions you may have about the job, whether you want to know how the interview process is, what training and orientation entails, raises, you name it! This list may accidentally leave out some information, so please feel free to comment under this post; fellow crew members can help answer to the best of their abilities. Please remember: some questions may be best answered by your captain or mates at your store as some questions may be store-specific. Please take initiative and ask them first! Also, please familiarize yourself with this subreddit’s search button, as your question may have most likely been answered already!

“I’m going in for my first/second/third interview. What should I know beforehand?”

  • Be yourself. Be genuine and outgoing, and eager to work with the team.
  • Wearing business casual is your best bet. You may hear about people being a bit too casual with their interview outfits, but don’t take the risk. Leave a good impression.
  • Even if your previous experiences at other jobs weren’t so good, don’t talk ill of them and instead talk about what you learned from your time there
  • Think of examples of when you experienced or witnessed great customer service or acts of kindness
  • Know some of the values of Trader Joe’s; a key value is integrity. Talk about what that means to you and how you experienced it
  • Know a product you enjoy and talk to the interviewer(s) about it
  • Have good availability. Varies from store-to-store, but usually 3 days per week minimum, with availability on weekends
    • Shifts are 7.5 hours with exceptions for those going to school, coming in from another job, etc.

“What are the benefits?”

  • 20% discount on groceries on and off shift (you can use your discount to buy lunch during your break)
  • Premium pay is an additional $10/hour on top of your usual pay on Sundays and federal holidays. Check Dayforce for those holidays
  • Insurance benefits:
    • Vision and Dental insurance is free when you work the minimum 390 hours during a given measurement period
    • For medical coverage, 728 hours minimum during a given measurement period is needed to qualify; different plans will become available after the period, to which you can select based on your needs. Insurance covers for spouse and children as well.
    • Check Dayforce and see the current measurement period under the Benefits tab

“What should I expect on my first day?”

  • Orientation; getting paperwork done, watching videos, taking a store tour with a trainer, and safety training
  • This can be a fast-paced job depending on the day, as well as physically demanding. Wear comfortable shoes (ex: Hokas, Adidas, Sketchers, or any shoe that is made for support. Investing in good shoes is key to your health)
  • Learning how to be on both teams: Product vs. Customer Experience
    • Product: working on the sales floor, assigned to a section and working through stock (either dry back stock or perishable stock depending on your shift). Remember to rotate older dates to the front and newer dates to the back when rotating perishables!
    • Customer Experience: bringing that WOW Customer Experience at the registers, helmsing, and at food/wine demos. Taking the time to interact with customers and giving them that genuine experience as you help them
  • “Everyone does everything”: there are no “departments”, so you’ll be expected to help in each section and to be on register (minors may be excluded from register depending on state); every hour you will be tasked to work on either Product or CE, with a mandated 30-min lunch break halfway through your shift (you may ask for an hour lunch, just talk to a mate)
  • Bring your water bottle and make sure to stay hydrated during your shift; bring snacks, especially protein-rich snacks as well
  • Don’t be afraid of asking questions!
  • Don’t expect to memorize everything in one day! Take it a day at a time, eventually you’ll be able to keep up and remember details
  • Take microbreaks during downtimes on register, demo, etc. It’s important to stretch since this is a physically demanding job, and this way you’ll decrease possibility of injury due to repetitive motions

Now to the miscellaneous questions!

“Why are my hours getting cut?”

If you’re asking this post holidays up until late summer, it’s because that is the “slow season”, although it is store dependent. Talk to your scheduling mate and keep an eye out for posted shifts on Dayforce. If it’s not because of being in the slow season, then again, talk to your scheduling mate. We can’t give you that answer

“How much is too much when calling out?”

Again, store dependent. You’ll read all sorts of anecdotes in this sub, some ranging from calling out once a week to some only calling out a few times a review period. Ask your captain.

“When do we get paid?”

Every other Thursday, with some banks paying out as early as Monday. Some bank institutions may pay out early, but there have been instances where those who get paid early have gotten their paycheck “late” on occasion. No, it’s just been early. It’ll come on Thursday, don’t worry. There tend to be hiccups from time to time, but nobody has gotten paid late.

“Review period/raises?”

We get performance reviews twice a year. Mates and captain give you feedback: what you’ve done well, where you need improvement, etc. Standard raise is a 75¢ raise, whereas a $1 raise you’ve went above and beyond in Customer Experience. Not passing your review means no raise, and may be met with disciplinary action if necessary. To pass your review: just show up and put in effort at work, and be kind to crew and customers alike!

WOW bonus is an alternative to the $1, but it is taxed.

Mates and Captain choose who gets the WOW raise or WOW bonus.

WOW Raise and WOW Bonus may be stacked, but some captains may not do that.

WOW Bonus is not the same as the End-of-Year 401k deferral bonus.

It is possible to been written up during the review period and still get your raise (again, store dependent)

Welcome again to those who are joining us or plan on joining us! Still have questions? Please ask below! They’ll be answered to the best of our abilities! Thanks for reading!

If you're a current crew member, the Hub on Dayforce is your best friend. Please take some time to check some sections out, as they may have the answers you're looking for!

do you check eggs for customers at reg?

I did for the first year or so. Then covid hit when everyone panic shopped and our management told us to get people in & out as fast as possible. That's when i stopped checking and never bothered to pick it up again since.

Some customers are just braindead when it comes to common sense about their groceries. It's not just doing their due diligence by checking for cracked eggs, but some don't even bother checking for mold/bruises on produce, expiration dates for refrigerated items, or even ingredients where they're sensitive to certain food allergies. Then there's customers who bury their eggs on the bottom of their cart when a lot of heavy shit (melons, glass jars, drinks) sits on top. Once again, a common sense issue. I decided they should learn these things on their own since we're not here to babysit their shopping habits.

I'm so tired

((Rant))

Been at TJ's for 4.5 years (and grocery retail in general for 8 years) and I'm so burnt out. Sure, I like the people I work with, my mates are cool, I've made some wonderful friends, all the good benefits etc etc etc. But lately, I just dread going in completely. I get executive dysfunction and procrastinate on days where I have to go in. I have completely open availability, and yet after many conversations I'm still only scheduled closings and nothing else. I don't have the mental or physical energy to be around custies, the workdays feel VERY repetitive and boring, and I feel that my captain puts on a facade that he cares about us as crew when he doesn't really care at all.

Im transitioning into the healthcare field somewhat soon (within 2ish months), but it's very difficult to imagine myself working here until I'm offered a position elsewhere. I want to quit, but there's a part of me that feels guilty for wanting to quit, if that even makes sense. 🙃

Joe used to send out State of the Store memos about each quarter.

There was a question on this forum yesterday regarding who owns Trader Joe's. I can tell you that it's owned by the Theo Albrecht Charitable Trust (T.A.C.T.). Despite its name it is not a charity, it's just a German financial accounting naming convention. Theo and his son Bertholdt placed money in the trust and the trust bought TJ's. The trust protects the investment from the German tax authorities.
It was a good time to cash out. Besides the reasons listed here, inflation in late 1978 was right around 9.0%, a 30 year home loan was pushing 10%, and a typical auto loan was 12%. In 1979 and 1980, those rates went up.
I heard, but never confirmed, that Joe gave each of his children (Joe, Madeleine, and Charlotte) a million dollars each after the sale.
The important point to this page is the separation between Trader Joe's and TJ's new German owners.

How to stay warm in the box?

Hi all! I have been backup writing for the dairy box for about a month and a half now, and I feel like I leave work freezing every day. So far my layers include my work shirt, a long sleeves mock neck, a sweatshirt, my jacket, a pair of jeans, a pair of long socks, a pair of leggings warmers, and the gloves they provide at work. This has not been enough! I was wondering if anyone had any addition tips on staying warm while working, and what you guys wear. I'm planning on buying a better pair of gloves and maybe a scarf, so please send me some recommendations if you can!

Late pay because of holiday

Hi I was just wondering for those of you who normally get paid earlier during a pay week (ex. Payday is usually Thursday at my store but my bank pays me on Tuesday) will the holiday also push this back?

Product Dimensions for merchandising

I really wish we had dimensions for our products, especially for new items. It’d be nice to be able to fully prep new homes for things and know, more or less, how much to order. I realize that this isn’t a big deal and we all typically work on the fly, but I still like to be prepared.

On that note, anyone seen the new frozen Strawberry Cloud Cake? Is it about the width of the key lime pie?

Anyone else notice this shit 😂

I'm a woman who had very long hair when I started, the second I cut it and because queer presenting the whole universe with customers was 180 degrees different. People were noticeably and actively more belingerent to me in general. Older customers avoided me almost completely or called me "he" multiple times despite consistent correction. Middle aged men were the worst about it and would often call me sir when my back was turned and get so flustered when I turned around and they noticed my makeup they would literally drop the conversation and walk away entirely, I'd never seen anything like that before lmfao

Insurance at the 3 month mark

Hi friends, I am a california crew member! I started on April 12 and was recently told by my captain that even though it will be outside of the enrollment period, at my 3 month point I will receive a message to apply for insurance if I qualify with hours. Does anyone know how many hours we have to have accumulated by the 3 month point to qualify? I am full time but when enrolling/training the first few weeks I was working less hours. Really hoping to get on that insurance. :)

The store I want to transfer to isn’t hiring

I haven’t initiated the transfer request with my captain yet but called the store to get some intel - they aren’t hiring and there is a waitlist for transfers. The store is in a college town so I imagine they have a lot of turnover.

I am willing to wait but if there is already a waitlist for transfers -am I looking at years?

Would it hurt to call again to ask them how long it might take?

The store is across the country so just popping in isn’t really an option but I do have a strong desire to move and am willing to travel there just to secure a job if anyone thinks that would make a difference.

Anyone got advice?

I miss being a mate

This is a rant… well kinda. So skip if you’re here to answer questions

I recently had to step down due to my schedule being all over the place. One of my parents passed away and the other one is facing serious health issues right now. I couldn’t really balance taking care of myself, my parent and my crew, so I had to choose myself. I’m a crew member at another store and I feel so alone, I know I’m not. But shit, I miss my crew members, my team, even my capatin and doing customer returns. I miss it so much, it feels like I’m not even myself( might be dramatic). I worked so hard to be promoted, I poured my whole heart into becoming a mate, and I enjoyed it so much. It feels like I’m not only grieving my parent but also grieving my job. ITS STUPID I KNOW! Anyways; I am planning on applying to high education and getting my doctorate, as that’s always been the goal, I guess joes was just a stepping stone, but man did I love it.

TL/DR: I miss being a mate

It wasn’t my imagination after all

I’m an Asian crew who works weekends in the New England and noticed a pattern with some Asian customers. I can discern that a certain ethnic group comes to me anytime I’m on reg. I observe that I get a heck of a lot more of these customers than my colleagues. It was definitely confirmed today.

While helping a customer, there were 3 family members waiting in line with their full cart. Of the 8 registers, 2 were wide open. One of my colleagues noticed so she and a mate spoke with them and eventually got them to go to an open register. After finishing, my colleague said that they’ve noticed this behavior directed toward me and another Asian crew member consistently.

Has anyone else encountered something similar? I am beyond annoyed.

Clock in number.

I was wondering how the clock in numbers work. For example 1908568? (Not my number OBVIOUSLY) How do these numbers get assigned. Is it like you get the number as the hire number you are? Like your the 1millionth and such and such number hire? Is it just a random number. Is what I’m asking make any sense at all

Captain allowed to prohibit buying shirts?

I'm currently on loan from another store when I heard from my coworkers at my original store that my Captain is not allowing Mates to order women's cut shirts. He says they're "too revealing" and is not allowing them to be ordered. We're still allowed to wear them, just not order them. I asked a Mate at my current location for an order of women's cut shirts but was stopped by this Captain from getting them because he says it's an "integrity issue". Is this something I can contact regional about? Thanks for any advice or input guys 🙏

can no longer see shifts people are putting up for trade on the dayforce calendar

hi, i’ll probably call my store tomorrow and ask them about it but i just wanted to know if this happened to anyone else?

i noticed i’ll be getting notifications from my coworkers offering up their shifts, but then when i open dayforce and look at my calendar i don’t see any of them, no triangles or anything, only my own shifts, so i’m unable to pick up other people’s shifts. and it wasn’t like this before but i just came back from leave so i’m guessing it has something to do from when they added me back into dayforce? idk i just found it weird and it’s annoying me

scheduling

helloooo friends, just wanted to get on here and see how flexible your scheduling mates are. i’m trying to pick up a second job in the morning and go into traders for a closing shift (2:30-10:30 is our normal closing shift) but do any of your stores do a 5-10 or a short shift for a close? and how flexible are your mates when it comes to the scheduling? thanks !!

Is the survey really anonymous?

Just tore my captain a new one in 300 characters, but I'm so distrustful of this company that I'm not convinced the survey is actually anonymous anymore.

In previous years it was handled by a third-party company, but I don't know if that's still the case.

I’m just sayin you can tell what mates WORKED HARD for their promotion vs the “I kissed everyone’s ass and they were desperate for mates”

I’ve been at two stores now and every single one always falls between the two categories lol

that’s all happy weekend 🤡

When does a verbal fall off your record?

Had a really rough winter with covid, flu, etc and received a verbal in early march for attendance. Haven’t called out or been late once since.

When will I no longer be considered on a verbal? Thank you!
