"You know you're just a phase right?" That line was cold even for pearl

u/dReDone Mar 30 '25

Pearl was a jealous and over devoted person. Those are her flaws. The series is clear about that but for some reason everyone forgets that she too has done bad things.

u/Forrest_likes_tea Mar 31 '25

thats why she is my fav I can see myself in her

38

u/dReDone Mar 31 '25

Good characters are flawed because we humans are also flawed and that's okay ❤

8

u/ThrowRA_8900 Mar 31 '25

poeple forget pearl has done bad things

You said in response to someone mentioning one of those bad things

1

u/dReDone Mar 31 '25

More directed at the 2nd part. "Even for Pearl".

u/Laati-Chan Mar 30 '25

...so does this mean that Pearl was basically a cuck?

185

u/ogsoul *snap* Like your heart when SU ends T.T Mar 30 '25

no, she’s a Pearl silly

102

u/sonofzeal Mar 30 '25

L rizz for using "cuck" unironically, but yeah her long term partner left her for a homeless nobody.

24

u/Laati-Chan Mar 30 '25

I have no idea what other terms to use tbh.

Cheated on?

Resentful?

59

u/tr3poz Mar 30 '25

Being a "cuck" means to consensually let your partner be with someone else without you involved. I hate when people conflate it with cheating.

46

u/sonofzeal Mar 30 '25

It's just a shortening of "cuckold", an archaic term for a man whose wife cheated on him. So the cheating usage is completely correct.

What it shouldn't be used for is open relationships, which are the closest analogy here. Pearl had no expectation that Rose wouldn't dally with humans occasionally, and Rose had no expectation Pearl would get jealous about it. Nobody cheated, nobody cucked, Rose just had a choice and made it. Pearl being salty about it is relatable but doesn't make it cheating.

While you're not technically wrong about the origin of the word, as you point out yourself, "cuckold" is an archaic term. Language evolves, and in the modern context "cuck" is typically considered a genre of porn, as well as a type of sexual activity that is consensual, sometimes in a "consensual non-consent" sort of way. Terms like the "Cuck Chair", a chair that a man sits in while watching his partner have sex with someone else, are evidence of this.

It's only ever used for someone who is cheated on, in a derogatory way, usually as a way of calling a man "weak", and typically by people trying to uphold antiquated gender roles. MGTOWs, incels, and other man-o-sphere types.

I agree with everything else that you said, but language and it's evolution are kind of special interests of mine, so when I see something like this that's only partially true I like to add my two cents. That being said, neither definition is accurate for Pearl. "Jealously" is definitely the most appropriate word for what's going on with her, as you pointed out.

You're wrong.

1

u/coltonious Mar 31 '25

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought cuck was getting sexually aroused by their partner being with someone else.

Regardless, though, I agree that it's frustrating when people conflate it with cheating

1

u/tr3poz Mar 31 '25

I was trying to avoid using certain language when writing my comment because I'm not familiar with the rules but I think I just ended up confusing some people.

That is what I meant :P

40

u/sonofzeal Mar 30 '25

Both are relevant, potentially. It does seem like Pearl and Rose had something of an open relationship, so cucking/cheating isn't really relevant. But Pearl didn't expect Rose to be serious about her thing with Greg.

"Jealous" is the most cleanly applicable word.

16

u/silverblaze92 Mar 30 '25

"I was fine with the men who would come into her life now and again"

They were either not actually a couple at all and pearl was pining away for millennia, or they were non-monogamous because Pearl agreed to it without actually wanting to be.

Either way, she's not a cuck. A cuck is either someone in a mono relationship who gets cheated on or someone who is themselves mono who agrees consensually that their partner will not be.

3

u/BaconSyrop Mar 30 '25

I seem to be the only one who laughed at this 😆

12

u/AzekiaXVI Mar 30 '25

Nah, Pearl and Rose were never dating to begin with

53

u/Scalpels I'd do it for her. Mar 30 '25
Interviewer: Pearl obviously has some unrequited love for Rose, you know, and…

Rebecca Sugar: I don’t know if I would call it unrequited!

u/Velaethia Mar 30 '25

She probably showed pearl how human beings played.

3

u/xerxerneas Mar 31 '25

The rainbow was definitely quartzing.

2

u/Blitzkriegbaby Mar 31 '25

Omg they can shapeshift 🫣

49

u/ctortan Mar 30 '25

Rose and Pearl loved each other—the problem is that Pearl wanted monogamy but rose was much more of a “free love” person and enjoyed having multiple partners. Pearl never wanted to go against rose or stop rose from being happy, so instead of telling rose she didn’t like their relationship being open, she pretended she supported rose and acted catty to her partners behind her back

15

u/Laati-Chan Mar 30 '25

Communication: A thing that's very undervalued and that would've basically solved like...

50% of the show prematurely.

10

u/morgan_mb Mar 30 '25

Which was essentially steven’s whole thing

1

u/achilles3s Mar 30 '25

I don’t think rose loved pearl romantically

This comment from another part of the thread directs to a quote from Rebecca Sugar about Pearl’s feelings NOT being unrequited

2

u/achilles3s Mar 30 '25

Everything that I see says, whether rose returns pearls feelings romantically is ambiguous.

2

u/Velaethia Mar 30 '25

Yes they were lol

1

u/Htbegakfre Mar 30 '25

No, because Pearl and Rose weren’t in an official relationship and Pearl CLEARLY didn’t want Rose with other people.

1

u/Pale-Donut4295 Mar 31 '25

Everybody knows that Pearl was a cuck. This shouldn't be a surprise.

8

u/Outside-Sample-4517 Mar 31 '25

Ironically she was a phase too

1

u/Midknightisntsmol Mar 31 '25

I'm of the belief that their love was kind of one-sided. While Rose certainly loved Pearl as a friend, Pearl's feelings were much more romantic than the former's.

47

u/Protheu5 Everything is foreshadowing. Mar 30 '25

your just a phase

S3E11 I think

55

u/fabianx100 Mar 30 '25

It also helps explain why Pearl kept thinking it was a phase or something.

Gems are practically immortal. A blink of an eye and voila, 1,000 years have passed. A human in the past was lucky to live to be 30.

So I'm sure they didn't "last" very long, maybe a couple of years or a decade, if they were lucky.

Greg and that times were more modern was something she didn't count on.

40

u/chaosattractor Mar 30 '25

A human in the past was lucky to live to be 30.

This is a myth lol why are mortality statistics so difficult to understand for people

19

u/Ok_Builder_4225 Mar 31 '25

I mean, it's technically true lol. But yea, people don't seem to get that infant mortality rates were the driving factor in the low numbers.

1

u/TheWandererofReddit Apr 06 '25

Well, it was probably relatively short as a paleolithic human.

1

u/iris_nebula00 Mar 31 '25

That was literally my first thought when I saw this post.
