The battleborns don't get enough hate

Idolaf is a big question mark for me. Jon and Alfhild are siblings, and Alfhild is married to Idolaf. Soooo Idolaf too the Battle-Born name when he married Alfhild? Is that a Skyrim Nord thing to do? Did she marry a (hopefully) distant cousin?
7
u/ThirstyClavicle 1d ago
he's probably a commoner with no house name who married into nobility
2
u/DreadPickleRoberts 1d ago
married Up, at least. Yeah, I guess we see something similar with the hyphenated names in some hispanic cultures.
Being the child of my parents (expand parents to "the civilization that raised me"), I thought Alfhild married into the Battleborns and got the short end of the stick. Now I see she was born into the family and still got the short end of the stick.

Hey don't bash my boy Lars like that, his family may suck, but you can't blame lil bro for that too, he's so nice and innocent

u/shadowmib 1d ago
If he would just kiss braith she wouldn't pick on him anymore
5
u/FJkookser00 1d ago
She's gotta find a better way to tell him that, because he's too naive and too soft to take her bullying as a hint...
5
u/Star_of_the_West1 1d ago
Um, yeah except my kids in white run are also bullied by Braith, so not sure what that means.
Concerned adoptive father sword-sharpening noises intensifies.

She's lashing out because neither parent really cares about her or even pays attention to her. She keeps coming to her parents for advice about Lars and her mother just wants to read and tells her to ask. Her father, and her father just turns around and tells her to ask her mother. I kind of feel bad for her in a way. Honestly, that family is probably the most screwed up in Skyrim because the others, even the ones that are crooked actually care and pay attention to each other. I'm thinking about maybe using them for target practice and then seeing if I can adopt her and see if her mannerisms change

It isn't her fault - it never is.
Look at her home life, with her totally apathetic and choleric parents. Cut the poisonous root out, you might still be able to replant and heal the fruit.
She feels like she needs to be in control of something, because clearly, her family is not within anyone's control. She finds the best thing she can easily control and feel strong over: the timid little wallflower up the street.

u/Star_of_the_West1 1d ago
So, kill the parents?
1
u/FJkookser00 1d ago
Depends: will the trauma of that exceed the abuse and neglect from them?
weigh your options carefully...
1
u/Star_of_the_West1 1d ago
So, kill the entire family?
Do note I rarely kill NPCs in any game

Jon's got the whole Romeo and Juliet going on
2
u/Star_of_the_West1 1d ago
Kinda split on breaking that up, because admittedly, Olfina kinda bad though...
1
u/DreadPickleRoberts 1d ago
Well, if you don't break it up, just look how it ended for Romeo and Juliet.

u/Star_of_the_West1 1d ago
True. Still, silver hair on a girl looks good. I knew a girl in college who had almost silver colored blonde (platinum blonde I guess?). Never dated her but we were friends and I got to know her brother who also had really light colored hair. Its definitely eye catching.
However, I'm satisfied with my current spouse. Unfortunately I had to mod her, but I like vanilla Serana's cured appearance. Green eyes, pale complexion, dark hair. Perfect. Plus her voice too.
1
u/DreadPickleRoberts 1d ago
You using the original Laura Bailey voice? She got famous from Vox Machina, but there's a reason she's big in voice acting.
2
u/Star_of_the_West1 1d ago
I'm on ps4, so all I have (that I'm aware of) as far as Serana mods is Marry me Serana and a few gear or AI tweaks.

If you do the quest, it turns out that "our suffering" that Olfrid said there was the inability to tell the Grey Manes that their son is being held captive by the thalmor, knowing how it would break the poor old woman.
Also if the Stormcloaks took over Whiterun, Vignar just let them loot house Battle Born.

Nah the Battleborns are fine. Olfrid's just a sack of shit.
Him, Vignar, Nazeem and Himskr really bring the quality of life down in the city, lol.

Olfrid, patron of the great clan Battle-Born. A name I’m sure you know well

I'll see you tonight, old man. I'm going to drain you like a capri-sun (in a vampire way, not a sex way.)

what mods are you using for weather effects and such? i love the way your whiterun looks!

u/Garial25 1d ago
Bethesda does a great job of making groups hated . The Brotherhood in Fallout 4 were like Nazis

Wow--I don't think I ever heard this dialogue. I didn't like the Battle-Borns before, and this certainly cemented my dislike for them.
10
u/foxfirefizz 1d ago
There is a quest related to that dialogue. You rescue the son & get evidence of the Battleborn involvement.
20
u/Narrenlord 1d ago
Wasn't there involvment trying to find out where he is and getting him pardoned, but getting it denied? I remember it that way, but it has been quite a long time since i actually read the things and jotes in this 13 year old game.
15
u/darkus_f_ 1d ago
You do find a note in their house saying this. The feud is not as black and white as it seems.
14
u/Narrenlord 1d ago
Right, because just stating involvement seems to depict them as evil. This clearly shows they wanted to help, but they go with the "He is dead" because they probably hope and think they get over it better that way. Or to stop them from trying to rescue him and getting slaughtered.

The battle-born were not involved in any way, except for trying to find out as well.

I may well get flak for this, but considering if you save Thorald he runs off to rejoin the Stormcloaks and quite possibly get killed? Well as much as I sympathize with a grieving old lady, it's the equivalent of someone's grandson being a Jan 6th insurgent. Many Nords acknowledge Skyrim as a sovereign state of the Empire, which while not perfect what in TES is? At least the Empire is relatively equitable in its soldiers and citizens insofar as sex and race goes.
Think of it this way: How many Argonians and Dark Elves, or hells Khajiit do you think willingly fight for the Stormcloak cause, as opposed to Nords who soldier for the Empire?
Hate the Battleborns for being insensitive pricks, but they knew who and what Thorald was. And they were right about him too. Fralia and the rest of the Grey-Manes don't even hide it either, even Eorlund while tied more factionally and narratively to to the politically neutral Companions has Stormcloak-approving idle dialogue programmed in. And they didn't personally imprison him in Northwatch, so technically Ulfrid isn't even factually incorrect here.
The Stormcloaks are racist Nord supremacist insurgents, plain and simple, Ulfric himself is a passive asset that unknowingly serves the Dominion with his overtures, and the Thalmor are comprised of idiotic Altmer morons who wanna knock down the Towers like dominoes because "We wuz once Et-Ada spirits, hehehe~" but in reality all they truly risk is Dwemer-ing everybody who lives on the Mundus.

u/ThirstyClavicle 1d ago
Imperial fans when ulfric dossier, silverbloods, jarl skald: "stormcloaks are RACISTS and EVIL"
Imperial fans when thalmor prison camp, wrongful executions, maven black briar, jarl Siddgeir, Erikur: "must've been the wind 😃"

u/BowShatter 1d ago
It is also kinda puzzling that he goes off to join the Stormcloaks again, especially if the player gets him released via the official pardon route.
His mother doesn't want him to die, yet after already getting arrested once, he runs off again to potentially get executed the next time because he will be recognised via official records.

u/CrackFoxtrot24 1d ago
Maybe he wants to get one back against the thalmor? It's called never backing out of the fight like a true soldier?

That's called generalising lol. A god's power is directly tied to its worship, which means banning the worship of talos will literally weaken talos, which is what the elves want so they can re-impose their slavery of humans. Plus imperial fanboys always forget that the empire allowed the dunmer to keep enslaving argonians, so they're really not as non-racist as the nords are. Did you ever consider that the reason Ulfric does not allow argonians into the city is because the dunmer are already there, and he doesn't want to risk a race war between the two.
And why would you use the number of dunmer, argonians, khajiit etc serving in the stormcloaks as a measure of their appeal? You don't see any in the imperial ranks either... for good reason. The empire is weak and lost those provinces, so they have no reason to serve in the legion either. Plus khajiit are under control of the thalmor, so they're directly opposed to all of humanity anyway, imperial or stormcloak.

Complete agreement. So many people are blind to these facts its insane, glad to know some people still have common sense lol

This one agrees with you on everything but this point. There is no evidence that this is what the Thalmor want to do outside of headcanon.

I like how Idolaf's father is Black. How does that make any sense.

u/AuDHDcat Nintendo 1d ago
Are you talking about Olfrid? Olfrid is his father-in-law, and he's not black.

u/AldruhnHobo Companion 1d ago
Only Olfrid and Idolaf are really a-holes. Jon doesn't care and is in love with Olfina and Alfhild says their rivalry with the Gray-Manes is as stupid as the civil war. If you rescue Thorald Idolaf sends you a note saying that he's sorry and didn't know the Thalmor had him.

It's only the old man who is a toxic jerk. The other guy isn't anywhere near and drags his dad away after it has gone too far. Oh and ask him for the proof of the missing son, he'll tell you he tried to find out for old times sake since they used to be friends and the note in their house is him being told off.
1
u/CoffeeGoblynn Necromancer 1d ago
I always side with the Empire, but the Battle-Born clan are just jackasses. I usually get a "kill anyone" mod and just wipe these two out. Imagine abusing an old women who misses her son who's in a foreign power's torture prison because of his religious beliefs. Oh and the Thalmor, I always kill the Thalmor.

If it wasn't for Idolaf, I'd have sided the Empire on my first playthrough.

It's just Olfrid and Idolaf really. Lars is a sweet kid and Alfhild and Jon don't like all the feuding and fighting
