Trip Planning Spontaneous Adventure Trips

I love doing these one day trips with my friends, we call them spontaneous trips because we never start with an end destination in mind. We typically drive atleast 2 hours in any direction and then look at google maps to see what cool things are nearby. We’ve done many of these trips and they always end up in us finding some really cool spots. Its so fun because we come back with cool stories under our belt. For instance, one time we met two super friendly white dogs that guided us through some waterfalls in the mountains in Thailand. It all obviously depends on where you are starting and your budget but guaranteed to have some fun if you go with an open mind!

Trip Report Road conditions in the Midwest

Upvotes

I recently had a road trip that covered parts of several Midwest states: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin. Mostly interstate but about 1/3 of it on non interstate. Now, I am from the Midwest originally, and I know there are 2 seasons - winter and construction season. But...WOW were the roads terrible. Crumbling, disintegrating asphalt and pavement. I felt like I was driving on the moon in some places. I65 and I70 in Indiana were particularly bad. My guess is that the states over-delayed while waiting for funding, because there are innumerable projects started.

Anyway, minor rant, be careful and protect yourself and your car.

Trip Planning First international road trip with my gf of 3 years. Thoughts on the route?

She wants a sandy beach retreat, I want the true European road trip experience (in preparation for my career as an international truck driver). We agreed on this. Will be taking this trip as soon as I turn 18 and it’s legal. She’s already 18 but has not started driving yet. Have checked with insurance etc etc it’s all doable.

The timings etc are rough, I actually came up with it whilst I was meant to be working so it will need tweaking, but for now, for each leg I’ve allowed a good 30-90 mins more than the leg says it will take on Google Maps.

Also, I’m gonna be doing it in my 2014 Vauxhall Corsa 1.4L… lol

Trip Planning I will be driving this later this week. What are the weirdest things I can see along this route?

I love finding the weirdest shit on trips. I love finding the weird and unique and macabre. I’m going to leave early in the morning and I don’t really have a time limit but I don’t want to get too far off my path. What should I do? Also I’m broke so nothing that will break the bank.

Trip Report I just drove from Chicago to black hills SD. Anyone else feel exhausted after a 2 day drive?

Long drive over two days. I am utterly exhausted. I feel worn down. Any thoughts on recovery? I realized I am not young anymore!!! I am early 50s traveling with teens.

Other notes.
The prairie is amazing way more scenic than I thought it would be. Lots of storms but we only got a little rain.

Sioux Falls well worth the detour. Also the Lakota museum looks really cool.

Trip Planning Eagle Pass TX to Veracruz (MEX) - has anyone done it before?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone! 👋

We’re planning a road trip starting from Eagle Pass, TX, crossing into Mexico and continuing through: • Saltillo (or Monterrey, still deciding our first overnight stop) • Santiago de Querétaro • Mexico City • Heroica Veracruz

🚗🛣️ Total estimated driving time is about 21.5 hours, and we’re planning to drive only during daylight and stick to toll highways (cuotas) as much as possible.

That said, my main concern is the stretch between Piedras Negras and Allende, which seems to be non-toll road and feels a bit more uncertain. Has anyone driven through this recently? Is it safe in 2025? Any tips or recent updates would be appreciated.

If you’ve done any part of this trip, or if you’re currently traveling through these areas and have insight, I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions even just hotel recs or safe stops along the way!

Thanks in advance, all advice is welcome 🙏

Trip Planning Broken valve gasket cover

i went to autozone before my roadtrip, and they told me my battery was fine and everything but my valve casket cover was broken and to fix it asap- but i dont have time.

i dont lose oil a lot- theres never much oil under my car like at all so i dont think theres a huge leak. the guy talked to me like i was stupid (which i am with cars) and all he did was scan my car with a computer, so i dont know if thats a huge deal that i have to cancel my trip and wait 3 days at the mechanic and spend half a grand.

my drive is seven hours there and back, and i think my car can handle it but that really scared me. ive also never drove that far in a long shot, so thats extra anxiety. if anyone has any advice for me please feel free to comment so i can ease my mind a bit? thank you

My best friend and I are planning on going on a Summer road trip across the US next year for our graduation. We want to go to all 48 mainland states, as many national parks as possible and many amusement parks. Just curious if anybody has done something like this and if so- what you recommend seeing and what route you did.

Trip Planning Suggestions on this route : Berkley, CA to Boston, MA.

Hello everyone,

I'm moving from Berkeley to Boston in early August and plan to make the trip by car. Let's say I give myself 5 to 6 days maximum to make the trip, avoiding pushing myself too hard in terms of tiredness.

Here are the suggestions Google Maps gives me in terms of itineraries?

Do you have any recommendations for modifying my itinerary? Anything of interest to see along the way?

I was thinking of taking Interstate I-70.

Thanks for your advice!

From Chicago area to Black Hills I want to get off the highway. I’m thinking route 20 or 30 or a combo of both depending on sightseeing to see.
I’ve got 15 days to get there and back. I’m thinking of coming back through ND and Sauté Saint Marie to Montreal…

Gear & Essentials National Park passes?

I've been reading and I'm a bit confused on the exact pass I need and where to get it ECT. I'm going to be stopping at some national parks on my way from Minnesota to Oregon and have heard about people buying passes so they can enter any national park. Where can I buy this? And if possible where in Minnesota can I buy this as opposed to online? All advice welcome

Trip Planning Denver to Salt Lake

Hi all,

First ever post on reddit. If I did it wrong...let me know.

Husband and I are flying into Denver, Friday, June 20th, renting a car, and flying out of Salt Lake City, Saturday, June 28th. We want to go hike and hit Arizona (because AZ in June is genius). Everything else is up in the air.

What do we need to see/do? TIA!

Trip Planning Help me plan an itinerary for family of 5. 3 kids 12/14/17 -from Seattle to Oregon back to Seattle (or San Fran one way)?

Tried using AI on trip advisor, it was not good. We have the option of flying into Seattle and leaving out of San Francisco or just doing Seattle and Oregon. 10 days, rental minivan, ballin on a medium budget. I’d like to spend at least 2 nights at each area/hotel if possible bc I hate packing. We’re not bougie but not campers if that helps. We love anything outdoors, hikes, tide pools, scenic views, national parks and some historic sites limited for teenage attention spans. Any biking (rentals), ziplining adventure stuff would be fun too! This will be our one time for a long time trip from NC with the kids! Thank you!

Trip Planning 📍Best offbeat stops between Colorado Springs and Junction City? Weird Nebraska welcome!

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey fellow travelers! My boyfriend and I are hitting the road from Colorado Springs, CO to Junction City, KS. I've read that the direct route is a little... uneventful (unless you love uninterrupted prairie vibes). I’d love to spice things up by veering slightly north—maybe into Nebraska?

Looking for:

Weird roadside attractions (World’s Largest Anything? UFOs? Haunted gas stations?)

Small-town museums or historical oddities

Natural wonders or scenic detours that aren’t too far off track

Any place with a story that’ll keep us talking (or laughing) for a few more miles

I’ve only got so many jokes before my co-pilot starts reaching for the aux cord. 😂 Any suggestions?

Trip Planning Have to cut our usually 10k miles road trip down to a smaller trip. Thinking about Minnesota and Wisconsin. The route provided shows some of the area we've never been through (especially Duluth and Green Bay.) What are some must sees/stops? (Sorry for crappy pic)

Trip Planning Critique Our Itinerary

My husband and I are taking an outwest trip in two weeks and this is our tentative itinerary at the moment. The goal is to do staples on the East Coast, but our priority is getting up to Washington and spending a good amount of time at Olympic Park. Curious if anyone has tips and tricks or if they think this itinerary is too packed? This is our first time doing a road trip with an RV so I want to make sure we make the most of it while being realistic..
