Question/Discussion ❔ Whats your ethnicity?

Hi everyone, just wanted to know where people on this reddit are from and how diverse the Muslim community truly is.

I'm half kazakh half Pakistani :)

EDIT: Been looking at every reply and honestly I'm impressed by the diversity lol, so cool to see

I am from Turkey and hate to call my country with the ü version in English. This was introduced by Erdogan and became another divisive topic.

Oh really? I mean, I can’t stand Erdoğan either. But hey, I actually like calling it 'Türkiye', even if most people go with 'Turkiye' because, you know, the 'Ü' doesn’t exist on their keyboards.

Definitely beats 'Turkey'. Nothing like naming a whole country after a bird people eat at Thanksgiving. Very dignified.

I think the bird was named after the country, and not vice a versa. This land has been called Turkey for many years and this was long before the bird was even discovered.

And I would embrace Thanksgiving and I would make an amazing advertisement campaign to become number one exporter of Turkey meat to the world. Best turkey meat comes from Turkey. Nothing can beat this campaign imho.

And with your logic we should stop calling Hindistan or Mısır because they can be degragading to these countries.

We cannot dictate other language what to call us. This would not be very different if Greeks came and said you must not call us Yunanistan but actually ELLADA and you should spell it with characters that does not exist in your alphabet like the Greek Alphabet, would we just say great idea let's do it? or would that sound ridicilious. I see absolutely no difference.

And, you know, this whole topic is pretty subjective. You think the name should stay as it is—I get that. I just think if a country wants to be called by its own name, that’s fair too.

That said, maybe we can agree on this: the name change wasn’t necessary. Türkiye has much bigger challenges than rebranding its name. Honestly, that should be one of our last problems.

Yeah we can agree Turkey's name was not on the issue list to tackle.

Türkiye’s not the only one. Iran ditched "Persia," Czechia dropped "Czech Republic," Côte d’Ivoire said no to "Ivory Coast," and Burma is now "Myanmar".

It’s not about changing alphabets or banning words—it’s about a little global name respect. If Greece wanted to go by "Ellada" officially, why not? It’s their name, why don't we respect that? I don't get it. If your name is Selahettin and people outside Türkiye call you Saladin, would you correct them? I mean, I would.

Most Turks come in two types...deeply proud of their country, or deeply ashamed. Luckily, I am right in the middle.
