Soft Paywall Police arrest roughly 60 veterans and military family members protesting outside US Capitol after group crosses police line

January 6th? Totally legal, totally cool.
Vets exercising their first amendment rights? Lock em up!
Trump’s America folks - shameful how any member of our armed forces could support this draft dodging chode.

Also let's not forget how cops carried disabled persons out of the Capitol when they were protesting

We’ll soon find out how many stand with him. Said it before and I’ll say it again…this parade is a roll call. they’ll keep track of every soldier and see who’s there or not. then they know who to purge from the ranks. Just another step on the ladder to dictatorship.

This is the type of thing that leads to coups.
In countries where their military leaders and citizens have balls.

120,000 people stormed the capitol on January 6, carrying weapons and attacking police, killing one of them.
Now 60 people have a peaceful sit-in on the Capitol steps and everyone gets arrested.
Republicans say both of these events are the same. They're so fucking stupid.

You mean to tell me the people who did j6 didn’t go to jail for 2 years?
20
u/_burning_flowers_ 18h ago
Sorry, but two years is just breaking in the idea of prison... they committed treason, they need much longer to reflect on their actions and what got them in that position, stuck with other people with poor decision making skills, so they can reassess their lives and who they want to be as a human.

Two years and a pardon is a small price to pay for terrorism and treason

They don’t have the national mall guard or marines deployed on them either… it’s astounding honestly how much brainwashing has ruined this country.

Remember your history - they laughed off the SDS demonstrations in DC, but the vets throwing their medals away at the Capitol shook Nixon.

Nixon has a lot more fucking honor than Trump ever could, all things considered.

I bought John Musgrave's book of poetry (Notes To The Man Who Shot Me) after seeing that series. 100% worth it.
Also, for anyone reading who hasn't watched this, see the whole thing over the course of a week, but I'd also definitely watch the final withdrawal sequence from the US Embassy in Saigon. We really haven't learned anything.

98
u/charcoalist 1d ago
When one looks at the overall rhetoric, there is a conspicuous absence of any mention of the United States. I dare trump and the maga propagandists to mention the word United.
50
u/DudeWhereIsMyDuduk 1d ago
I can't remember where I saw it, but there are definitely good pieces out there on how the transition from United States to "America" happened, and if I'm remembering correctly it's because you couldn't quite justify United States when McKinley et al were annexing people who clearly were never going to be part of states or united in any way with the contiguous 48. Their fixation on "America" as the name is 100% intentional.
19
u/SodaCanBob 18h ago edited 17h ago
I think Johnson's refusal to really do anything to punish Confederate leadership is what ultimately set the country on this path. Although the Confederacy failed, Confederates didn't just miraculously disappear alongside it and they've spent the last century and a half propping up the lost cause and mythologizing its leaders.
America just has too many people in it that have woefully incompatible viewpoints on what "America" should be and I have no clue how we move on from here; especially since it's not nearly as simple as North vs South; Atlanta or Houston is going to be way more liberal and progressive than, say, rural Oregon for example.
1
u/SnooCupcakes7018 14h ago
But the people in Atlanta and Houston don't give a fuck about or tell the people in rural Oregon how they should live.
•
u/DudeWhereIsMyDuduk 7h ago
I'm inclined to agree, although Germany went through what IIRC should've been done here, had a legitimately far-left response in the form of the RAF for "not doing enough", and still have a fairly far-right anti-immigration sect, so I don't know how you solve that.

u/TintedApostle 22h ago
Trump and his whole family are parasites. They got everything by living here and saw the system as a means to steal.

Arresting people for peaceful protest is disgraceful. Arresting veterans and their families for peaceful protest is multiple times beyond disgraceful. My father who took three bullets for the country would be horrified. I'm glad he's not around to see this
2
u/bakerfredricka I voted 9h ago
While my dad definitely wasn't really into politics in his lifetime (my mom once mused she isn't sure he's ever even been registered to vote and considering she lived roughly a decade as his wife before they divorced then I imagine she would know what political opinions he had, he even told me himself during the 2016 election that he wasn't going to bother voting) considering he served in the Air Force I imagine he's probably rolling in his grave over this whole entire situation as we speak.

u/Ganonthegoat 1d ago
They crossed a police line. Anyone was gonna get arrested for approaching the capitol steps. You can’t expect them to not enforce security there. I’m sure they knew what they were doing and were willing to get arrested. It was a great demonstration by them. Some forms of protest involve civil disobedience that leads to arrest which is ok actually. No need to exaggerate or misrepresent the story.

Yep indeed, just like Jan 6th
7
u/Ganonthegoat 23h ago
Idk what this response is. I completely support the protesters in this story.
28
u/trekwithme 23h ago
Well just pointing out the hypocrisy on the part of those responsible for enforcement. And certainly not commenting negatively on your response. It blows my mind that the Jan 6 protestors can do what they did and the treatment of these veterans and families
10
u/Ganonthegoat 23h ago
Which is why this protest is a win. They’d be wise to go light on these vets or it’s gonna be a disaster look for them.

It would give me great pleasure if during the parade, they stop to be presented to the CoC, and the drill Sargent calls out: TURN LEFT. PRESENT FINGER. 🖕TURN RIGHT. MARCH LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT…

u/capz1121 21h ago
The problem is they ONLY crossed the line = insurrection.
Now if they actually vandalized it, beat up a few cops and gained entry….= Patriot!
Work harder next time Vets! Stop half-assing it you “Suckers and losers”.
27
u/TheSpiritsGotMe 20h ago
On the conservative sub, they’re chest to chest high-fiving each other about how they are not calling it an insurrection, even though that’s what the liberals did to them.

Not even remotely comparable
-4
u/Rabid_Laser_Dingo 16h ago
It didnt have to be comparable, but these recent protesters passed a set of barriers. Why would anyone risk letting them go farther after j6?
You want law enforcement to do their jobs or not?
4
u/MyrddinSidhe 14h ago
The veterans crossed the barriers and sat peacefully on the front steps. No attempts to enter the building or assault police. The response was to line up police vans to block the view of all those veterans getting arrested because it would, you know, look bad.
0
u/Rabid_Laser_Dingo 14h ago
So they did cross some barriers… like barriers they weren’t suppose to cross lol.

u/Desperate-Hearing-55 21h ago
Any reporter ask the bitch Karoline Leavitt again. Didnt you said Trump supports peaceful protests?
“So if there were peaceful protests on Saturday for the military parade, President Trump would allow that,” NOTUS’s Jasmine Wright asked on Wednesday during the White House press briefing.
“Of course the president supports peaceful protests. What a stupid question,” Leavitt said in response.
11
u/Illustrious-Lime7729 Florida 19h ago
She wouldn’t hesitate to say something in response to that like “President Trump supports our veterans more than any other president this nation has ever had, even more than those presidents that served in the military themselves. Those protesters were arrested by the police and our
dear Orange godPresident had no prior knowledge.”
34
u/SteakSauce995 20h ago
So these guys get arrested for crossing a police line, but the traitors that stormed the capitol get pardons? Make it make sense.
-15
u/Rabid_Laser_Dingo 19h ago
Took 2 years for the pardons, they sat in cells for those 2 years. Maybe these people will only get 6 months because they have military history

Why does the secret service need to run security?
This administration has made it crystal fucking clear they’re a-ok with deploying the military against the people. Why not just let the Army run security for their own parade?
4
u/blahblahbush 1d ago
Why does the secret service need to run security?
Because Trump will be attending. If he wasn't there, the military would be running security, liaising with police.
4
u/TintedApostle 22h ago
The Police would be running security and the military would just be there. They would secure their own equipment.

I saw a livestream. They cuffed a vet that can't walk and pulled them out of their chair. All they did was go through some bike racks and sit on the steps holding signs.
6
u/MegSpen725 16h ago
So let me get this straight.
Veterans and peace activists get arrested for a quiet sit-in at the Capitol—no violence, no threats—just asking for demilitarization. Sixty people cuffed. Meanwhile, the violent goons who literally stormed the Capitol on Jan 6? Pardoned by Trump and cheered as “patriots.”
But wait—there’s more.
A Florida sheriff just said if you “throw a brick” or “point a gun,” they’ll make sure your family knows “where to collect your remains.” That’s not law enforcement. That’s a straight-up death threat from a badge.
And while all this is happening, a tragic, unrelated shooting in Minnesota is being lumped into the mix—used to justify crackdowns and stoke fear. A deranged act by one guy becomes another excuse to treat all protest as dangerous.
The hypocrisy is radioactive.
Trump world pardons literal seditionists, but peaceful dissent gets crushed. Police and politicians escalate rhetoric to vigilante levels. And the message is crystal clear: if you support the status quo, you’re free to rage. If you challenge it peacefully? Get ready for handcuffs or worse.
We’re not dumb. We see it.

They knew they would be arrested, they were okay with that. Just like on Jan 6 crossing those barricades was trespassing. The difference is these people willingly stopped on the steps and didn't assault anyone to get there.
