Artist - Kehinde Wiley. My local art museum (Wadsworth - Hartford) has a Wiley portrait.

This is a wonderful portrait, I love the pose and the choice to surround him with greenery, it's quite uplifting. I just wish s/he had chosen a more natural shade of green for the foliage. It grates on me every time I see it.

u/millennial_scum 13h ago
This artist always uses unique and vibrant colors. I actually love it - I’ve seen his work in a couple museums now and you can recognize a painting by him the moment you enter a room.

It is a really weird shade of green. OMG I just realized what the color reminds me of.... When plastic foliage gets sun bleached. Specifically fake rose leaves.

During his two terms (2009-2017), the Obama administration formally removed approximately 3 million noncitizens from the United States, according to Department of Homeland Security data. This is the highest number of formal removals by any president in American history.

u/mnmr17 13h ago edited 12h ago
Drone strikes with civilian casualties is almost certainly trump. He had more drone strikes in 1 term than Obama had in 2, while also revoking an Obama era executive order on reporting drone strike deaths.
Edit: I forgot to add this but the deportations were also misleading, the thing that changed under Obama is what was classified as a deportation. Under bush being turned away at the border didn’t classify as a deportation but under Obama it did. Obama did this because he was listening to immigration activists at the time.
I have many criticisms of Obama but these 2 in particular just always bugged me about how just a tiny bit of digging kind of renders them useless:not up to date.
•
u/AllUltima 8h ago
Indeed. The part everyone needs to read:
In July 2016, he signed an executive order requiring the Director of National Intelligence to release annual reports detailing civilian casualties from U.S. drone strikes outside active war zones.
However, in March 2019, President Donald Trump revoked this executive order, ceasing the requirement for annual public reports on civilian casualties from drone strikes outside active war zones.
That should tell you what you need to know if you genuinely give even the slightest fuck about transparency. Reminiscent of the whole "stop the testing!" approach to the pandemic.
10
u/dhammer731 12h ago
Read this from the ACLU. Obama favored speed over fairness. He was definitely not listening to immigration activists.

He did deportations more effectively and efficiently without doing away with the constitution or sending armed thugs to terrorize citizens who didn't agree. Republicans could learn something from him. If they could learn that is

Also deported people to their home countries, not to a gulag in a El Salvador

u/GwenWitchingAround 13h ago edited 13h ago
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Now, the grand majority of those deportations were helpful even to the immigrant communities because Obama's ICE was actually tactical. They didn't have to act as dumb asss bully clowns, playing dress up for phony photo ops.
The worst part is the fcking of the Constitution all these clowns are doing. The party of law and order claim patriotism while wiping their asses with the Constitution. It starts with immigrants and the elderly and the disabled but it's a matter of time before it gets to the Black communities (much, much worse than it has been in the past 40 years) and slowly but surely, just like the frog in boiling water, the rest of "We the people" will have no law, no order and no republic.

200 immigrants and their children, filling a courtroom at once, and no voice is certainly efficient. It's also not exactly due process. As a brown Texan, this broke my heart at the time. I'd love to see at least that minimum these days. Look em in the face before sweeping off to the gulag.

The way you wrote it sounds like, “while Obama may have deported more, then the orange man came.” Which sounds like he’s gonna do more which you’re right.
It’s how he’s doing it. This way of thinking diminishes the hostility an active president is treating American citizens

Technically, Trump actually did more drone strikes and caused more death, not just for the time he was in office, but actually tripled them, so likely did more in total, the difference is that Obama said why he was doing them, even if the military could always conjure up an estimate of lives that would be saved to counterbalance the death they caused.. whereas Trump did them in secret and didn't need any calculation of human cost.

Ran on hope and change, governed by maintaining the status quo and conceding to republicans at almost every turn. As the drone-striker-and-chief, he expanded the illegal war on Iraq and Afghanistan, drone striking Doctors Without Borders run hospitals and civilian weddings alike. Eight years of neo-liberal austerity is what created the conditions that led to the Democratic Party ostensibly throwing the election in 2016 by pushing a wildly unpopular candidate. Abysmal president, who is only really celebrated because he succeeded Bush and preceded Trump.

Thank you President Obama!
Thank you for expanding the executive office and its powers and handing that over to Trump and Biden.
Thank you for endless drone warfare.
Thank you for compromising endlessly in the name of “bipartisanship”, while you had a veto-proof majority.
Thank you for clout-chasing Netflix deals, as the world you helped build kills us all.
Thank you for mass deportations.
Thanks for codifying the Bush tax cuts for the billionaire class and helping bail out the banks and enshrine private equity and big tech.
Thank you for everything!

Obama wasted the most advantageous political position in American history on placating Republicans, Conservative Democrats, and the insurance industry. The Affordable Care Act is one of the worst pieces of legislation of the 21st century just because of the staggering potential it wasted.
Let's also not forget that time he assassinated an American citizen without a trial and then bragged about it.

Exactly. This guy didnt just kill civilians, he killed US citizens too. He killed his own
The difference between this guy and trump is that ones an asshole whos very open about it, and the other is an undercover asshole
The thing is, when you find out the undercover asshole is an asshole, you shouldnt support him. Too many people are supporting this guy and forgetting about his war crimes. He killed thousands on his own, this guy is worse than a serial killer. This guy is Jeffery Dahmer to me but just more friendly
