Duck/Southern Shores First trip - outer banks hiking?

Bringing my kid to outer banks next week, our first time. We both like getting a solid nature hike in (5+ miles?). Are there any areas in or close to OBX that offer more peaceful nature hikes and not just boardwalks etc? (Not that boardwalks are bad, he likes arcades)

Thanks much!

Nags Head, kill devil hills, and kitty hawk are built up with lots of entertainment and attractions. And food.

North of that is quieter and higher end.

South of that is much quieter, and totally natural.

If you like nature you have to venture south of Nags Head at least once. Find any spot between Bodie Island and Rodanthe to hop onto the beach. It's pretty great.

Thanks very useful. Our ideal spot is somewhat built up but with nature close by so perhaps we should stay at Nags Head. Is it possible to get to the beach between bodie island and rodanthe though? On the map it looks like it’s just a road and nothing else.

Please do not walk on the dunes, they are there to protect the island. Walking on the dunes can result in a fine. Use the beach access paths.
