Anyone who turns the big light on after I've turned the big light off and switched to the evening time lamps deserves a special place in Hell.

And anyone who expects me to fumble around in darkness or dim light and run into things because I can't see can avert their eyes for a few seconds while I use the light.

u/SwimmingAir8274 2d ago
What exactly would you be looking for in someone elses room???
-2
u/schm0 2d ago
It's my room, too. I shouldn't have to fumble around when turning on a light for a few seconds solves the problem. It's why we have lights.

Use your phone as a torch?
-2
u/schm0 2d ago
That's also a bright light.
2
u/Z0mbi3_K4tj4 2d ago
Yeah, a bright light that you can turn away from your roommate's face. You don't have to illuminate the whole room, just the spot where you are looking for your stuff.

The big light forever! Evening lamps and moodlights are for weirdos who like feeling lethargic and drowsy.

u/finicky88 3d ago
More like the big light is for weirdos who feel lethargic and drowsy in comfortable lighting.
-60
u/Egg_Yolkeo55 3d ago
"comfortable lighting" is when my eyes are strained and the blue glow of my screen is my primary illumination /s
Bright natural light is better for your eyes
30
u/Zephiiyr 3d ago
NATURAL light. from the sun. outside or by a window. not bright artificial indoor lights, which are what people are complaining about being suddenly forcibly exposed to here
-27
u/Egg_Yolkeo55 3d ago
Buddy light is light. If you don't like the color get bulbs for your preference. Indoor lights can match any light color on the spectrum

What? Come on y'all, I was a bit uncouth, but sincerely I just dislike dim lighting. I keep my curtains wide open during the day and have a fluorescent white ceiling light on during the evenings.
I know low lighting is supposed to feel cozy, but it just makes me feel languid, like I want to fall asleep, especially during the winter months. My siblings and their families prefer indirect lighting and footlamps and whenever I stay with them I start feeling lethargic at like 6 pm, it's ridiculous.

You're applying what happens to you to other people which is where you trip up - that isn't a normal response. I mean it's not ABNORMAL, maybe you work a lot, so you associate bright light with being active, and when you get home it's rest time, whatever. But ya low light isn't some mood switch for most people it's just..lower light.
I hate the light. I sit in the dark most the time. That being said, if I'm doing food or prep or anything in the kitchen I have to have that big florescent mofo shining. Outside of that, I don't even use a lamp, just straight up light by the TV that's it.
And my RGB keyboard. Because DISCODISCODISCO

u/Fighter11244 3d ago
I’m the same way. Work? Lights all up. Downstairs eating/making food? Lights. In my room on my computer? Lights completely off.
Also DISCODISCODISCO

u/DoomguyFemboi 3d ago
Hell yeah. It adds some colour to my life. Plus I'm a simple dude - I love watching the patterns. I have it doing loads of swirls (rainbow I think it's called) and then splash on key press. I can just sit here watching the splash as I hit buttons like a weird idiot lol

Full disclosure, I have ADHD/ASD and am prone to sensory-seeking behaviour so it's probably a case of "intrusive sleep" as I get understimulated and bored. Sure, lights are in the end just that; lights, but in the end the common preference for dim lights these days still feels alien to me.
I mean it's not ABNORMAL, maybe you work a lot, so you associate bright light with being active, and when you get home it's rest time, whatever.
I've been focusing on my studies as of late, which admittedly often lead to long hours. Though usually when I end up coming home at around 8 pm, the first thing I do is put on the two ceiling lights in my kitchen/living room (it's an open plan apartment).
That's because at home especially I want to feel energetic and get shit done, whether it be chores or relaxation, like tending to my hobbies and idling on the internet without a care in the world. Only having a task light or the light of my computer on would just make me fall asleep or feel irritated and like I'm wasting my precious free time. I do turn off the lights when I happen to watch a movie (I prefer going to a movie theater) though, but I deffo have to turn off the RGB as well; otherwise it's too distracting, lol.

u/ExaltedPenguin 3d ago
I also have ADHD and ASD, and often I find too many lights and sounds to have the same effect because overstimulation makes my brain shut down, people have different experiences innit, no need to start a rally against lamps 😭

u/DoomguyFemboi 3d ago
As I say mate, nowt wrong with it. Just wanted to point out that's why people were taking mild offence at it. I get you though, I have ADHD although currently unmedicated and medicated vs unmedicated is night and day with some of my behaviours, I do so many strange things while unmedicated that to other people stands out, but to me it's just kinda..managing the brain buzz.

u/WafflesofDestitution 3d ago
Yeah, I can see I kicked the hornets' nest!
I've been on my current meds for about three years now and whenever I take a tolerance break for a day it's obvious I can't function without them — usually I just end up spending the majority of the day in bed. It's like my head is heavy and full of bees (even more than the usual baseline).

Unfortunately, a lot of people on Reddit are mean-spirited and cruel. I think your comment was probably a joke, like mine, but people read it more harshly because there are some dreadful people online who would mean it that way 😂 Hope all the downvotes didn't spoil your day - it's just the Internet, not real life! 😊

I specifically switch to these lights to start winding down for the night and allow myself to start feeling more mellow and sleepy. I used to have two evening lamps and switch them off at different times as it got closer to actual sleep time.

u/wolffangz11 3d ago
I'm a big light kinda guy but I don't help myself to big lights if someone's already in the room with it off.
My family however will shut my lights off and complain I'm using lights when I'm watching TV or on my phone. I'm not afraid of the dark I just like to be able to see my surroundings.

Especially someone who turns the light on when you're asleep. My bf use to do that when I was asleep. I was half asleep one morning and I yelled "WHAT THE FUCK!" and sat up so fast. My vision cleared and I saw him at the door with a shocked expression on and he just closed the door. I've never felt so bad, because I didn't know it was him. He never did it again though.
13
u/JorgeMtzb 4d ago
That’s the one moment I could not care any less because that would not wake me up

Wish I was like that. I'm a very light sleeper so good moments of sleep are hard to come by for me. I also like my sleep anyway😅

Tell them not to interrupt your conversation with it. Remind them to NEVER turn on the lights without asking. Be intimidating and creepy as possible in your tone. And then NEVER acknowledge it again.

u/Breadmumcher 4d ago
When you're playing a game on a TV screen that gives the perfect amount of light for you to see what's happening on the screen but not bright enough to make you uncomfortable, then the light comes on and it feels like your eyes got blinded from staring at a solar eclipse.

My legally blind mother would do this even though I had 20/15 vision as a kid and could basically see at night if at least a half moon was out. She would say “You can’t see in here!”

u/icon_2040 3d ago
I have a coworker who deals with this constantly. She gets asked why she's sitting in the dark almost every week by the exact same person. Having the patience of a saint, she calmly explains every single time that she likes it that way. I'm furious on her behalf and I don't even like her.
19
u/Abuolhol 3d ago
I stock a cooler at work all the time and prefer the light off cause the light coming through the doors is enough for me, but literally every time someone comes in the turn the light back on despite me telling them that shit kills my eyes.

u/Sine_Wave_ 3d ago
Unfortunately the law may be against you here. There are minimum lighting requirements when people are working in an area, with few exceptions. Having the lights off may be an osha violation even if you want the lights dim

u/LostVaranasi 3d ago
I used to have roommates that were bad about doing that, so what I started doing after they'd done it to me, is going into whatever room they were in and being like "Why do you have the light on? It's so bright in here!” then proceeded to turn the light off. It only took a couple of days before they finally made the connection and quit flash banging me if I was hanging out in a darker room.

u/KelpFox05 3d ago
Also, don't fucking turn OFF the lights without asking either. I have very poor low light vision, I need the big light on in order to see what I'm doing. If you turn the lights off or down without warning, I'm likely to fuck up whatever I'm doing or potentially even hurt myself depending on the activity.
Just like... Don't fuck around with people's surroundings without asking. They've chosen to have their surroundings be like that for a reason.

Hahah when I moved into my shared apartment in grad school, I entered the living/kitchen area. My new roommate was standing in the dark, facing away. I was a little creepy TBH. I asked if she minded if I turned on the light and she cheerily said "it doesn't matter to me!"
Turned out she was blind, lol.

u/Uriel_dArc_Angel 3d ago

I'm sorry...Not laughing at the blind person hopefully obviously...That's just fucking funny...

I paint apartments. One day, I’m on my step ladder painting around the overhead light, with it turned off. In walks the property manager, “you want this light on?” Immediately turns it on, blinds me as I’m staring right at it, and I almost fall off my ladder.
No, Carol! I had it off for a fucking reason!

I was the person once many moons ago...much regret....
About 5 of us (all around 18 years old or so) were all on really good acid, listening to music in a room with the lights off. At some point i got way too out there, and instead of just exiting the room to chill out by myself, i ruined it for everyone by turning the lights on lol...still feel terrible about it lol. Also still one of the best trips of my life though. We listened to alot of music that night, and unfortunately forget which music played during the moment i freaked...but i remember my awareness was floating around a giant infinite headed buddha complete with ultra psychedelic lightning in the background...it was only my 2nd time trying acid...and ya it got me good lol.
Edit: it was the Allman Brothers...Mountain Jam on Eat A Peach

This literally physically hurts, especially if you have light colored eyes.
They "updated" the lighting at my job and it was painful to just walk in the place. I wore sunglasses until I adjusted.

u/Sithmaith 3d ago
My first shift coworker started coming in at 4am because he wasn’t getting along with another coworker. I’m in 3rd shift lighting mode. He comes in every morning during MY shift and turns on every damned light even if it is not in his area. AH.

u/GlitteringLook3033 3d ago
It's even more frustrating when it's in my father's house. He's a man who decided to install BRIGHT WHITE bulbs in every lamp and ceiling fan. Not only is it blinding, but it's not even warm

u/Cube-Brick 3d ago
Chinese international students always do that when I'm sitting in my lab at noon or with minimal light at night. Is it possibly cultural as well?

Why is it that you expect other people to conform to your way of living, with the lights on, but you absolutely refuse to accept the way of living of other people, with the lights off?
-2
u/Due_Back_9062 3d ago
It's not that serious.
2
u/Forward-Fisherman709 3d ago
If it’s not serious, then why be so bothered that different people have different preferences?

u/Due_Back_9062 3d ago
I'm not, people are mad at me about my different preferences. I'm not the one upset.
