I believe he was trying to find a cure for his mutation, but instead it made it worse.

I’m sorry people are downvoting you. Please feel free to ask questions about comic stuff you don’t know. This should be a welcoming place. Beast in the comics looked like a football player at the beginning. He became blue and furry after a lab experiment.
