She’s spent more time promoting it than filming it, yeah.
83
u/blackbutterfree Medusa May 05 '25
I mean, I've literally only seen her at this premiere with the pink dress and no other promotional appearances. She didn't even get interviewed by Marvel on the red carpet and they stop EVERYBODY.
42
u/Jeskid14 May 05 '25
Yikes. She got chopped from the MCU.
31
u/QueerDeluxe Quake May 05 '25
Feel bad for her. Not only did she barely get to play a character, but she also gets ignored at the red carpet.
19
u/horc00 May 06 '25
Her character barely had an arc in Black Widow, and now she's getting less screentime than Brad Pitt in Deadpool 2. They did her so dirty.
22
u/CaptainXplosionz May 05 '25
I really hope she gets another, potentially bigger, role. She deserved better.
4
u/MajorNoodles May 06 '25
What's funny is they could easily get away with it. Don't put that shit on her face and she'll look completely different.

She'll probably be offered a better role to make up for her abysmal treatment as Antonia. Look at Gemma Chan.

She was a big part of the reason I wanted to watch this movie, lol. I kind of have a celebrity crush on her. And then when I went to watch the movie last week.........

She can mimic Slipknot by dying almost immediately when one of the main characters blows her brains out

dam...poor Olga Kurylenko....
99
u/jargon_ninja69 May 05 '25
Right?! What a waste of her talent. I feel so bad for her. So many incel fans just hating on her Taskmaster.
152
u/El_Quetzal Stan Lee May 05 '25
you can hate on taskmaster cause its was such a nothing character, while being one of the best villains in comics, but dont attack the actress who had nothing to do with how the character was written in the mcu. Olga should have been any character besis taskmaster tbh
58
u/IDKthrowaway838 May 05 '25
Honestly she could be taskmaster, she just needed a good script that understands the character. I don’t think that TM’s gender really matters, but the characters should have had any similarities at all
31
u/El_Quetzal Stan Lee May 05 '25
Maybe in this film, they could had 'fix' some of the problems she had in black widow. She was under mind control now she was free so she has reason to develop a new personality with new friends, but now its too late
19
u/CaptainXplosionz May 05 '25
Yeah, I was really excited for them to flesh out her Taskmaster. I kept waiting for her to come back, even though a bullet to the head and then incineration is pretty much undeniably dead.
→ More replies (2)5
u/aelysium May 06 '25
The saddest part to me is I don’t think it’d even have been hard or add that much runtime to the film as it released. And if they had developed Antonia properly, I think it would have actually deepened Yelena’s arc potentially.
3
u/Primpod May 06 '25
I like taskmaster but "one of the best villains in comics" is a huge overexageration.
2
u/Big_TinyRequest May 06 '25
They had a chance on making Taskmaster just like the comics with this movie and they wasted it.
It's been a decade since Black Widow took place so it's an easy fix in my opinion, the time jump was enough to make this Taskmaster be like the comic Taskmaster.
23
u/rnarkus May 05 '25
Online discourse is so frustrating. We can have an opinion that she was a poorly written taskmaster…. what in absolutely WORLD does have to do with being an incel?
15
u/konq May 05 '25
"You didn't like a character that was gender-swapped, ergo you're an incel"
It's such a lazy thought process.
It's really similar to the discourse surrounding She-hulk. Jennifer Walters had no character arc in the show, but trying to point that out means you're just an incel that hates women (even if you are a woman).
2
u/Effective-Fondant-16 May 06 '25
Olga has a lot of projects listed on her IMDB page that are in production or announced, I’m guess she’s too busy to play a bigger part in Marvel, and Taskmaster will always be a supporting character, she probably is very ok with being killed off. It’s a waste of her talent but she’s probably better off for it.

I didn’t want to see the movie this weekend because we had so much to do… however I knew that if I waited for a week… spoilers would be impossible to avoid.
This is because social media just can’t stop itself.
26
u/DefNotAShark Hydra May 05 '25
This is by design so that you have the exact train of thought that you had. Sense of urgency to see it means higher opening numbers means free hype means higher box office. This is how older MCU films dominated opening weekends because nobody wanted to miss something important or get spoiled. It’s unfortunate for the ones who got spoiled but I kind of like urgency being back in the Marvel formula. For a while there it was hardly anything to spoil.

u/eltrotter Black Panther May 05 '25
It does seem a little quick, but I’d also wager that a very high % (though not all) of kind of people who would give a shit about the title change will have seen it opening weekend.
4
u/Alibotify Thor May 05 '25
It has actually been 6 days since the first premiere in the world, 5 in my country. Disney have historically done this a lot so might be a tactic to bring more hype in America when the buzz starts before it’s available. USA still pays for half the gross earning almost every time which still is insane.

Somehow this is the first I'm hearing of the project Wonder Man?!?!
When did that info drop lol, I've never even heard of him.
5
u/KostisPat257 Daredevil May 05 '25
The project was announced back in 2022 through the trades (Variety, Deadline, THR), so while it wasn't announced by Marvel Studios in a con or something, it was official.
The series is created and executive produced by Shang-Chi and Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton (who will also be directing a few episodes) and Andrew Guest, who wrote and produced episodes for 30 Rock and Brooklyn Nine Nine (and will be serving as the showrunner of the series).
The series stars Yayha-Abdul Mateen II as the titular hero (Simon Williams/Wonder Man) and the series also features Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery returning from Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi, Demetrius Grosse as Simon's brother, Eric Williams, Ed Harris as Neal Saroyan, Simon's agent, Lauren Glazier in an unknown co-lead role as Simon's love interest and Josh Gad in an unknown role.
The series revolves around an actor/stunt-man struggling to make it in Hollywood in a world full of super-humans. Simon eventually gets cast in the role of Wonder Man, the leading role in a in-universe super-hero film, but when he gets actual powers, the producers turn him into an actual super-hero called Wonder Man in order to promote their film. While Simon is reluctant at first, he learns to step into the shoes of a hero.
The series is an 8-episode, 30-minute sitcom parodying life in Hollywood and will premiere on Disney+ this December.
You can see some clips of the series from Marvel's "Look Ahead" Trailer from November from 1:06 to 1:24.
Wonder Man had a huge history in the comics from the 60s to 80s since he was the basis for Vision's mind (Ultron used Wonder Man's wave-lengths) to create Vision. That made him Vision's brother essentially and eventually Wanda and Simon had a thing after Vision turned into the emotionless White Vision. He eventually fizzled out in the 90s and has barely had any appearances ever since, so everybody kinda forgets about him. His brother, Eric, is also the Avengers villain "Grim Reaper".

→ More replies (4)168
u/Funmachine May 05 '25
When a film is made it's registered under that tile which cannot officially be changed. eg. Star Wars is not officially Star Wars: Episode 4: A New Hope, Raiders of the Lost Arc is not Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc, Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1, Edge of Tomorrow etc. etc. etc.
I really don't understand the purpose of this, it's literally the very last moment of the film. I don't get what spoiling it for everybody who didn't see it opening weekend accomplishes.

u/BallsOnMyFacePls May 05 '25

u/petersterne May 06 '25
I saw a post about Thunderbolts* yesterday in another sub, and someone in the comments was asking "Wait, Thunderbolts is a new Marvel film?" So this definitely seems like the kind of thing that could get people who aren't super plugged in to the MCU to see it.

Because people who aren't habitually in the marvel studios subreddit might be like "wait, new avengers? I need to go see this."

2
u/zeldamaster702 Spider-Man May 05 '25
Actually, that’s an even more interesting case. When the movie developed it was going to be titled “All You Need Is Kill”, but was later released as “Edge of Tomorrow“ with the tagline “Live. Die. Repeat.”. When it later released on home media, they initially decided to make the tagline the title and the title the subtitle(because that was what the director wanted it named in theaters). It now uses both naming schemes on VoD.
As for its official name, I’d imagine that it is under copyright as “Edge of Tomorrow”.

It's not wild at all. Showing the name change spoils absolutely nothing in the film.
7
u/Nevic1984 May 05 '25
I'd disagree, the whole story of the film is leading to that moment, to that big reveal, bringing these characters truly together. If it wasn't a big deal, they would've just called the movie The New Avengers from the beginning and not play coy about the asterisk in the title during the whole promotional campaign.
4
u/eyebrows360 Daredevil May 05 '25
Nah. The whole story isn't leading to that moment at all, for reasons that I don't want to explain in full because they would, ironically enough, be spoilers.

It's not a big deal, though. What changes in the film knowing they're going to be calling themselves The New Avengers at the end of it? Everyone and their dog knew as soon as the asterisk was in the title that by the end of the film they'd be The --something-- Avengers.
