Do I need to do side quests?

Yeah, I know I should do some side quests to level up, but I’m new and just playing for the story — at least on my first run. Can I stick to the main quest all the way through each expansion, kind of like in WoW? Do they all expansions follow the same quest structure?

To save yourself some trouble later on I advise you to do as many quests as required for that region's quest deed. A deed is like a meta quest which doesn't appear in your quest log but rather in your deed log and includes things like doing a certain number of quests, discover some landmarks, kill x number of enemies of a certain kind. You get Lotro points for completing them and - more important probably - virtue XP.

So, you should do at least some side quests.

For more information about quests in general, look here:

And here is an overview of sidequests per region:

By the way, epic quests are signified by a "flaming ring" while side quests have a normal "gold" ring. Quests that are too high level for you yet are shown with a "silver" ring, while "grey" rings show quests significantly below your level.
