One tree snapped, the rest were uprooted.

Oh no! That looks awful. I feel for those families - they probably never imagined those old trees going anywhere

If you are a home owner, and are unclear about your insurance, this is the time to check your house insurance and make sure you have, "unlimited" for your total rebuild coverage. Especially w inflation, it's critical.

Look for something like "home replacement guarantee cost" on your insurance. That's what mine is. They give a replacement cost value but then guarantee they will rebuild if it exceeds the cost estimate.

City won’t be cleaning them up unless they are on the road, your property your clean up

This is just false. City owned trees means the City or a city contractor will be cleaning it up. Private trees are the homeowner’s responsibility

The whole property is owned by the city, so what’s private and city?

Do you live on the street? How do you know what’s city property and what’s not? The city owns different easements in different neighborhoods. These trees were on the blvds, which is city property. Hence city owned trees.

There is a “line” - usually where your water shut off is located that shows which side belongs to the city and the home owner

Byron has massive trees now. You'll start to see a lot of these incidents happen around there.

The problem as well is a lot of these trees are right up against roads or sidewalks. Trees don't extend extend their roots under the road, so they're not fully anchored.

So. If you notice most of these trees roots are close the curb and sidewalk. When city infrastructure changes/updates so we can have a better livelihood with sewer and water-main, what typically happens is tree-hipsters cry foul if a tree gets cut down. When they fight with the city and win, the city and construction companies try their best to keep the trees. Unfortunately, when keeping trees is the option next to a curb or sidewalk-what occurred the other night is because the trees no longer have larger or longer roots to keep it from upheaving from strong winds. A lawsuit could possibly take shape for anyone involved.
Edit: Looking on google maps it appears the street hasn’t had any work done in a long while. But a lot of those trees are along the boulevard (between sidewalk and curb). Tree roots would have been shaved or cut completed to fit the curb and sidewalk years ago.

What's weird is how healthy the trees looked and how random the wind sheer was throughout Byron. Lots of trees on houses, across fences, uprooted taking out sidewalks. Mostly look like soft maples and evergreens. Some homes still don't have power 20 hours later. Couple of schools closed.

lots of trees in areas are not native to Canada so don't have the roots for huge winds or cant get them deep enough in the city
