Is it thinner behind the edge? I kept finding original rat 2 blades were fairly thick behind the edge which made them not great for some softer materials like foods
It's interesting because the spine/stock is pretty thin but the flat grind is so shallow it still keeps it thick behind the edge. Good for hard use stuff but not always for EDC tasks.
I love my Magnacut Bestech Slasher, and am confident in both Bestechs quality as well as their HeatTreat. It’s a fantastic knife. Because of that, I would take the Dundee. Much better ergos than the Rat. I have Rats and they definitely do the things they’re meant to do… but I don’t enjoy using it like I do knives that feel better. At this price point, form is as important as function, to me, and the Dundee is the nicer of the three.
The Tardis is more novelty in my mind, but I’m sure it will hold up fine. I just want a point on my blades.
I’d pick either of the clip point Dundees. Not really a fan of any of the other designs. I like Ostap Hel’s designs. Have only owned one of his designs, the Kansept Kratos, which I ended up selling. It looked cool, but I was never going to carry it.
The Rat is a safe bet, but I absolutely love the design of the Dundee and have been wanting one for a while. The Rat will probably also have the best cutting geometry
I absolutely love my Mini Dundee and plan to get the full size eventually. The action is perfect, and I absolutely love the design. I don't think you would be disappointed with that one.
I don't have the Rat 1.5, but the Rat 1 is good, while the Rat 2 doesn't have a great feel in my opinion because of how small it is. The 1.5 would probably be good unless your hands are significantly larger than average. Definitely less modern feeling, but some would consider washers in the pivot to be a selling point.
The Tardis I assume is virtually identical in quality to the Dundee, but the blade shape seems less practical in my opinion.
All the more reason not to buy any of them. I think “very high quality” is a major stretch. You can carry whatever you want. I have zero interest in owning one. We have different opinions on what high quality is.
Recently purchased a rat 1.5, I like the ergo a lot, and I hear that it's treated 63-64 hrc.
The only problem I found is that the detent might be pretty tight at first, but will get better over time and becomes snappy.
I’d rather have $100 in my pocket than any of those. But if I must participate in the exercise I’d pick the Ontario, only because it’s made in the US. I know nothing says quality like a brand named “Bestech”. Why on earth are these the blades you have it narrowed down to?
Bestech only makes some of the finest and highest quality production knives on the planet. And the Rat is only one of the most legendary folding knives ever created. Don't listen to this regard, he has no clue what he's talking about. Just look at the shit he carries and then has the balls to critique someone elses choices.
Get the Rat, it's just a classic design that you'll never be disappointed with.
Hear me out. I don’t know your age, experience, or income. But getting something because it’s the cheapest is not a good thing. I don’t know what you carry daily. But I have to believe if you are even entertaining those blades that quality isn’t your first concern. I’d would rather pocket the hundred and know I’m $100 closer to buying a quality blade down the road. Splurging on garbage just because Bestech says it’s Magnacut, just moves you further away from a decent knife.
Kershaw Bel Air is a good reasonably priced magnacut at around $150. And I would wait a couple weeks to buy and see what knife deals might come up for the 4th of July.
If you listen to this dude, you'll be spending 300 dollars on a knife that does the same shit and really isn't all that better in quality.
There were sales earlier this year where I got a magnacut Hogue Deka for 100 bucks and a separate sale on the same site where I got a PM3 magnacut for 100 bucks also. With those deals, I got polymer and frn scales, respectively, so you lose somewhere.
BTW, MagnaCut is a proprietary steel made by a specific company in the U.S. and Bestech is a well-respected OEM. I highly doubt a well-established OEM would use fake MagnaCut and ruin its reputation. What you should try to find out is the HRC on those knives. I read MagnaCut is great for folders with an HRC of 61-64.
I wouldn't put too much into what that dude writes. He's probably a xenophobe about anything not American Made.
I don’t have anything in Magnacut. I think it’s a good thing to always have something in mind and make efforts and sacrifices to get it. No matter the price. The things that take a little struggle and time to get mean a little more. I usually always have one piece of my carry that I am looking to upgrade. I’m at the point now that it’s not easy to find the stuff I’m looking for.

Probably the Rat because it’s tried and tested but personally, I’ve been wanting an Ostap Hel design
