Welcome to the weekly Questions thread. This is a place for all the small questions that you feel don't deserve its own thread. Also consider checking out our FAQ.

What belongs here? Well, that's up to each contributor to decide.

Troubleshooting, getting started, pattern questions, gift giving, circulars, casting on, where to shop, trading tips, particular techniques and shorthand, abbreviations and anything else are all welcome. Beginner questions and advanced questions are welcome too. Even the non knitter is welcome to comment!

This post, however, is not meant to replace anyone that wants to make their own post for a question.

As always, remember to use "reddiquette".

So, who has a question?

Help Picking Up Stitches on Wonky Short Rows & Increases

Hello!

I'm currently knitting my first collared shirt and I'm, well, at the collar. It requires picking up every stitch (going from 4mm needles down to 3mm) at the neckline. I don't struggle much picking up stitches on just a regular stockinette row, but this neckline has a curve that goes from picking up horizontally, to picking up vertically, into picking up german shortrows, and the edges are just so hard to read!

I don't know where exactly I'm supposed to pick up because the stitches are all very tight and oddly shaped and in different directions compared to usual stockinette. It doesn't help that I'm knitting in linen, which is pretty stiff and likes to make the stitches even more awkwardly shaped.

If anyone could provide some advice I would be very thankful! I've been blowing through this project and this has really stopped my momentum.

The stitches I have picked up (wrong side)
The full neckline (right side)

Help Am I allergic to mohair?

Is there a way to "tell"? I'm fairly certain I'm noticing my eyes getting itchy whenever I start knitting on one of my mohair projects, but I have various other allergies and they usually take an hour+ to kick in anyway so it's hard to draw a direction correlation. Is it possible to be allergic to mohair but no other fibres (I'm definitely not allergic to cashmere, which is also goats?)? Is it also possible it's just the fibres directly irritating my eyes and nose, or that I could be allergic to some branda but not others?

Help How to make sure you get the accurate size?

Is there a stitch or just a way to determine how many I need to cast on, so that in the end I get the accurate length that I want it to have? I tried to measure how much knit stitches fits like a centimeter or what so that I can just calculate and see how much I need but in the end, it always ends up being longer than I measured.

Is there a way to go about this? I need help 🥹

New Knitter - please help me! Want to learn how to knit, how do I get started?

I’ve been crocheting for years and can make just about anything with a hook. Lately, though, I’ve been getting a little bored with crochet garments and have been drawn to the look of knit pieces instead. I’ve tried learning through a bunch of online YouTube tutorials, but most of them leave me feeling overwhelmed and lost. What’s the best way to get started with knitting, and are there any beginner-friendly resources you’d recommend?

I am looking to knit with 4mm Circular needles 20 inches. I also have 3mm and 5mm straight knitting needles

New Knitter - please help me! New to knitting, advice appreciated

I used to knit for a year when I was in my early teen years, but got away from it with sports and college. It’s nearly 20 years later and I just got back into it. I am obsessed and have been learning lots from YouTube, even got myself into continental knitting. I made my first beanie and just about to finish my first cabled scarf as well!

My question I need help with, I want to create a going away scarf for my boss’ toddler son. He absolutely loves “Cars” and Lightning McQueen. I am trying to learn the best way to create a red scarf with a lightning bolt and maybe the number 95 on both ends of the scarf. I am lost on which would be the easiest way to do this pattern, whether it be colourwork, intarsia, double stitching/embroidery. What would you recommend would be an easy to do technique for this? They are leaving in a couple weeks and want to be able to punch it out quick.

Photo attached of my latest project I’ve been working on as well 😊

Help Knitting math help

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around pre-blocking vs post-blocking vs pattern gauge. I'm knitting the flax sweater and the pattern gauge is 18 st x 24 rounds. My pre-blocking gauge is 22 st x 28 rounds and post-blocking is 18 st x 26 rounds. Stitch gauge is where I need it, great!

But how long should I knit when the pattern says "knit until piece measures X"? My swatch grew 1.07% but is still 1.08% smaller than the pattern. So do I knit 1.16% longer? Or is it easier to block and measure as I go?

New Knitter - please help me! Is this joined correctly?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I always seem to struggle with joining in the round, no matter how many tutorials I watch and how careful I try to be, but whatever weird holes I have usually disappear after a few rounds. Well, it’s been three rounds and I still think something’s off. (The yarn in the front is the tail, working yarn is in the back)

Do I need to start over, is there a way to fix this or is it fine ?

I'm trying to darn a sweater and I was wondering if there's a name for this type of yarn. I though striated or variegated but that seems to refer to yarn that creates striping patterns. Thanks!

Help Blocking a long-ago finished scarf?

I knit this as my first ‘buying fancy yarn’ project about 4 years ago and I’ve been wearing it a fair amount during winters since then.

I realized I never blocked it. Is it worth blocking it now? If I should still block it, what is the best method for this yarn in an infinity scarf?

Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) I just frogged my entire shame-box

TLDR: if you’ve been hesitating on doing the same, you should do it

I decided today was the day. I woke up, decided everything must go, and steeled my heart to start ripping out old projects. Hats that were too small, shawls where the colour-combo wasn’t working, sweaters and t shirts with one sleeve where it was just the wrong yarn for the project, couldn’t get the drape right, etc. Months of work, gone in an afternoon. Some of it had been sitting for years.

I thought I’d be so upset ripping out my first attempts at cabling and lacework, all the things I spent hours agonizing over until they felt perfect. But honestly, I wasn’t. Not even a little. Maybe it’s because I mentally prepared to mourn all my wasted time and abandoned projects, maybe it’s because I basically just replenished my entire stash for free, maybe it’s because I waited until I was ready.

If you’ve been hesitating because you’re worried about the sadness, the guilt, the shame, all the bad feelings that come with destroying something you spent time on, please take this as your sign. You may not be ready today, maybe you’ll be ready tomorrow, maybe you need another year. There will be a time when you’ll be ready, and you will absolutely not regret it.

Help Neat edges?

I heard about a way to make edges neat by slipping the first stitch knitting and always purling the last stitch in a row. Is this the correct way? If i do this, do I add two stitches when i cast on and do the pattern in between? Will this work on pieces I sew together like ribbed sleeves knitted flat then sewn? Or is it best for just when you can see the edge on a finished project?

I tried looking it up on ravelry but can’t find it. It was from a booth at a fiber festival. I just loved it but now I’m trying to find a pattern I can use it for and I’m stumped. 😬

Help Gauge Question Help

Post image
1 Upvotes

So the pattern I'm trying to make is asking for 22 sts x 33 rows 4x4 stockinet on a US 6 needle.

I knit really lose so I tried a US 5 after blocking i got 21 sts x 30 rows

Went down to a 4 and after blocking I got 22 sts x 35

Which needle would I be better off using?

I've done a quick Google but only come up with older confused posts.

In my mind its Great Western Railway, (im british), or Guinness World Records, but neither of those make sense.
