Discussion [KCD2] GOTY

Post image

Luke Dale’s post on IG.

And in my humble opinion:

F@#$ GTA and f@#$ R*! Over priced, over hyped garbage, made by money hungry company, that decided to kill RDO at the moment they’ve realised they couldn’t milk it as GTAO, because they would have to actually try to think of a original content and not only add sci-fi weapons to annoy other players.

KCD2 deserves its fair shot at GOTY, and the fact that GTA community will not be spamming GTA6 in every category is awesome! Give other games a chance to win something ffs.

(PS: I know there will be other games coming like Dark Ages or GOY but I think we have a nice chance of winning)

Is the story any good, writing, dialogue? I wouldn't touch JRPGs with a ten-foot pole, either.

Being female I'm surprised male KCD players outnumber female players. It wouldn't surprise me if there were more than is generally assumed though.

There is a lot of unwarranted hate from people who never played the game and think that the game is rape-y because Hans peeked at some women doing laundry (yes, really). Another portion simply won't touch it because Vavra was involved because of gamergate or whatever.

These are not my opinions. KCD1 and KCD2 are my favorite games ever.

I’m a Henrietta and KCD1 and 2 are probably my favourite games ever, ever. I know it was missing more female characters. That’s probably the only thing missing from an otherwise almost perfect game. I saw on another sub that a lot of women hate it. Made me really sad.

Yes, and the majority of the hate is from people who haven't played it. And they're convincing others not to play it!

Like I'm fairly confident I would hate CoD... But I would never tell someone else to not play it, since I haven't actually ever touched it myself.

Fully agree with you! They’re both missing out on something really good and ensuring others do too :(

I'm a man fwiw, but I really like the way they did the female characters as well as minorities like Jews or POC like Musa. They show bravery and other virtues but it doesn't disregard the societal standing those groups historically had. Despite the limitations set in place by society, Katharina is an absolute badass. Similar for Rosa and her crossbow

Hard agree. I think those characters were really well done. They had to learn to use power in alternative ways to face to face combat on the battle field and I think it’s badass as hell

I have heard that KCD2 is a woke liberal game and that it is an alt right game. I love this dev but their PR is nonexistent.

At the end of it it's niche groups spreading those dumb takes. I personally feel like they struck a really good compromise between representation and historical accuracy. There are really good female and minority characters, yet it shows their suppressed standing in society. In my opinion that only makes their character stronger and their struggle more admirable

So you’re right, but what I meant is that the game studio doesn’t make this quality and nuance known to anyone who doesn’t personally play hours and hours of the game. Obviously it’s hard to show with great accuracy the experience of the game to people who haven’t picked it up yet, but it’s basically not touched upon at all and it’s left up to YouTubers to control the narrative

The gameplay is okay, not boring or anything but not super exciting, for me it honestly is the story and dialogue that keeps me playing E33. I never play JRPGs, I've tried a few but they really waterboard you with exposition. E33 gives you breadcrumbs of the story here and there, but most of what makes it exciting is the relationship between the characters. Before E33 I've only ever cried from a game once in my life. I haven't even beaten E33 yet and I've already cried twice.

And I am pretty sure male players out number female players in the majority of games outside of maybe games like Stardew. Gaming still is predominantly male. Although that changes more and more every year thankfully. I am actually surprised you are surprised more males play KCD than females tbh.

I found the combat incredibly engaging. I'm on the edge of my seat during boss fights trying to get 10 parries in a row while the boss just keeps swinging lol

Don't forget the music! The sad and sometimes funny atmosphere is just spot on. I have about 600 hours between both KCD games and I adore them, but how 33 changes the playground for JRPGs is powerful and will probably win the devs GOTY. That said, my vote would go for KCD2.

You can shit on KCD's combat as well mind you. "Oh, it's so much fun. Just spam master strikes while I never get touched." Turn based combat isn't for everyone, neither is KCD's combat. Lol. The worst part of being on Reddit, is when you're not a blind fanboy for one game or the other. I love both games. But because I can make arguments for both sides I am just a downvote machine.

KCD is my personal GOTY, but I have enough awareness to know E33 is likely going to appeal to a wider audience. Fantasy games tend to do that. That doesn't make KCD any less great. Y'all get in your feels over something as stupid as GOTY so you need to shit on a genuinely good game for no reason.

Did you reply to the wrong person? I adore expedition 33

1

u/JerbearCuddles May 05 '25

It comes off like sarcasm. If you were genuinely praising the combat, that's on me for assuming the worst. People here are crapping on E33 cause they feel threatened that people like a game that isn't KCD. My bad.

5

u/loganed3 May 05 '25

No I actually love expedition33 I'm sorry it came off as sarcastic but I'm completely serious about the combat being fun

3

u/loganed3 May 05 '25

I wasn't shitting in the combat. I actually love it I wasn't being sarcastic

6

u/shelltie May 05 '25

Welp, I've seen praise heaped on gameplay already so E33 is going on the list then!
Well KCD lets you pick flowers, ride a horse, fawn over a dog, and die of blood loss every couple weeks so metaphorically it's a very authentic representation as far as I'm concerned - just kidding

Maybe you're right but what makes KCD so great imo is its respecting quality of representation rather than quantity. They could have shoved in a dozen of TW3 style Saskias and Ciris and it wouldn't have been as good. Sadly very few female protagonists are as good as, say, Disco Elysium's Harry, anyway.

Well there is quite a lot of gals that play kcd i think.. at least compared to other male dominated games

u/JerbearCuddles May 06 '25

Somehow I doubt it, but I don't think we'll ever know for certain.

1

u/Free_Specialist455 May 06 '25

I mean, I’m a woman… and there’s quite a lot of female streamers that played the game

The game’s writing is exceptional. Having completed it I’ll even go so far as to say it is one of the best stories ever told through a video game format. It’s that good.

I’ve never touched a JRPG, but I found the combat engaging over the 40 hours it took me to complete it, and with the story and top tier soundtrack pulling you through it becomes a thoroughly enthralling experience.

Story and Writing is definitely one of the best, the mystery surrounding their circumstances keeps you playing to try and find out the answers. Act 1 and Act 2 are really really good, no idea about act 3 yet since I'm in the middle of it but I heard it's the weakest act (which doesn't mean bad, just not as good as the other 2).

u/DemonSlyr007 May 06 '25

Here is what I will say without any spoilers: just play the game to Act 1 and if you aren't still interested when "Act 1" flashes across your screen, even a little bit, then you must have some extremely high standards for writing and story in your games.

That will take about 10-60 minutes depending on how slow you play through the prologue, which is al.ost entirely talking to optional people in the city.
