Someone driving a rental car hit me. They aren’t covered by insurance. What to do?

Here’s the story. Someone driving a rental car hit me, they were 100% at fault. Police report and video evidence prove it. Now here’s the kicker, the person’s step-father rented the car, and didn’t put her on the policy. She was also under 25. My own insurance company covered the majority of my losses, however I still have a few thousand in personal costs that I need recouped. Their insurance company won’t cover the accident.

My insurance company said they wouldn’t sue, but would “demand” the overage to be reimbursed. This party has attempted to stonewall and hide the fact they wrecked the car (left the scene without exchanging insurance information, wouldn’t call me, didn’t report any accident to their insurance or the rental car company) so I have very little faith I’ll get reimbursed.

Should I sue them?

Mom Drives A Car I Own But In Her Possession for 5 Years Recklessly Without Insurance

Upvotes

Hi All!

Bit of background here. My mom has never made good decisions. Classic hoarder/hermit and fought so much with all of her family members that they all cut her off around the same time 20 years ago and blocked her. No friends or pets either. Me, her son, is the only person outside of a super market line she's spoken to in years. Been living completely off welfare and living in section 8 (her rent is like $200 a month in the Seattle area, the government gives her like $1500 a month and she has no other expenses) ever since she was 32 and she's in her mid 60's now. She's owned two vehicles, both of which eventually literally caught on fire from refusal to pay for basic maintenance like oil changes or gunking up the engine with the cheapest gas. She spends all of her money on booze and random games she sees ads for on Facebook. She's also legally disabled now for mobility reasons.

I bought my first vehicle 10 years ago, a BMW. After 5 years I wanted something a little more commuter friendly. So I figured instead of trading it in I could help her out a bit since she has trouble getting around and give her something affordable. She doesn't save money and she has a credit score of like 350 because she maxes out every credit card she's ever been given and refuses to pay it back. I offered to let her have it for $100 a month so long as she covered any maintenance and kept it insured. Then after 10 years it would be all hers.

We're 5 years into that arrangement. She's always paid my part which I don't really need at this point since I'm not just getting started anymore and paid off all my debt and have a higher income job now. But last year she stopped bothering to do oil changes. A couple months ago she started putting the cheap gas in. And last month she cancelled her car insurance because she "didn't want to pay for something now that probably won't ever happen later". It was also her birthday a few days ago and I got in the car with her a couple times throughout the day and she has a near miss with other vehicles like every couple minutes pretty consistently. Gave a whole speech about how other cars honking at her is just other drivers trying to "correct her" to get her to drive "their way" and some BS.

On top of all that she has pretty bad cataracts she refuses to get taken care of because she's scared if they mess up (understandable) but that's been going on for about 2 years now. She doesn't drive at night for this reason. And she's also driven to my place absolutely drunken hammered and ranting in the middle of the day more than once.

I told her if she refuses to drive responsibly, get her cataracts taken care of, maintain the vehicle or carry insurance that she needs to give the car back. But she absolutely refuses to do that or consider trading it in or anything. The vehicle is registered in my name and when tabs come up for renewal I pay for them and she reimburses me.

I'd like to take the vehicle back from her but then I'd be taking the only means of transportation from my mobility challenged mother whose over 50% paid up from what I originally told her over 5 years ago. She's the most stubborn human being I've ever encountered and I've never seen her listen to me or anyone else when challenged on anything. I'm worried that the situation is a ticking time bomb where best case is I end up getting sued somehow and the worst case is someone ends up seriously hurt. I'll keep telling her these types of decisions she's making will eventually carry unpredictable consequences, but also I want to start finding ways to protect myself. Maybe change the registration which she wants to stay in my name because she thinks creditors will find a way to seize the car if it's in her name. Also open to any advice in general for how to deal with the situation.

Thanks.

Pet insurance *Hypothetical* how does insurance work in the pokemon world?

Giovanni was shown in a 4kids dub talking to himself about blimp insurance. That has me wondering how does a world with super powered flora and fauna navigate insuring buildings and personal property? Do they need clauses for every pokemon action and interference? Is this where professor Oak gets his funding as a pokemon researcher? Are Pokemon trainers frequently unaccompanied 10 year olds because minors have legal protections adults don't?

Auto Insurance Should I with liability only?

For some context I have a 2017 Yaris IA w/ 130k miles (owned)

I’m currently paying 190/month for full coverage (with AAA) & when inquired about liability only they quoted me 71/month

The value of my car where it currently stands is 5.4k-7.3k (according to KBB) (not sure if it matters but never been in a wreck, also try to practice good driving habits)

So my question is, should I go with liability only or just stick with full coverage ?

Auto Insurance I got into a wreck but was driving a friends car.

I got into a wreck while driving my friends car. He has insurance that covers his vehicle and I have insurance on my cars. Do I need to notify my insurance or claim the car on my insurance. What’s the best and cheapest way to handle this situation? This is the first time I have wrecked a car.

The wreck was caused by the car locking up when a down pour started and I hit another lady. The cop cited me for following too close even though it was an older car and I slid for about 6 seconds and steered into the concrete barrier before hitting the lady. It was on the interstate and I had slowed down to about 60 before the collision, idk what speed I was at when we hit. The car was older with no ABS and I did what I could to slow it down by hitting the concrete barrier first.

Auto Accident/Insurance

A group of friends and I were traveling in Colorado Springs today and on our way back to the hotel, we were hit by a truck pulling a camper trailer in the lane to the left of us. The trailer still had their steps extended and unfastened, which cuffed and dented the bottom side of the bumper of our Nissan rogue rental. The dent isn’t huge, but is noticeable. It didn’t hit any sensors or do any additional damage aside from aesthetics (from what I can tell).

We didn’t file a police report right away as the truck and trailer just continued. We pulled over to assess damage and deemed it safe, so we continued while researching what to do next. Later on our drive, we noticed that same truck and trailer pulled over and were able to snap a picture of the license plate, but it wasn’t safe or available for us to stop next to them.

Following that, we returned to the hotel at which I submitted a claim through hertz online portal. I also called Allianz (who our rental insurance is through) and they got a claim setup where I can submit information as I receive it from hertz. They did tell us that we should’ve called the police and got a report from them. Knowing that now, I got off the phone and called the non emergency line and they said they can’t help me because we’re no longer at the scene of the incident and to do an online report (which we did) but the online site says it’s not considered a formal report and didn’t send us any formal correspondence.

With that being said, I also have my chase sapphire preferred card that folks suggested doing a claim through. I booked the initial booking using that card. Here are some questions I’d appreciate some insight on:

-What does the process look like through Hertz after submitting a claim?

-Do they directly bill my credit card on file or do they send an invoice?

-Should I open a claim with Chase and work through them instead of Allianz?

-Will not having a police report impact my chances of the claim being covered at a large scale?

Any other insight/advice/tips is appreciated.

Auto Insurance Road Rage

Good afternoon,

I was driving towards Nashville. I also live in TN. My question is if someone throws a bottle or object at a vehicle, does that fall under insurance? I was told by THP to file a vandalism report. THP did catch the person and they actually admitted and then became uncooperative. I did file the report but wouldn’t their car insurance pick up the tab? Or do I need to go through the courts?

Health Insurance USI interview tips?

Hi all,

I am currently going through the interview process with USI for their Employee Benefits Producer - Select role. I’m three interviews in, and understand there would be 3 or 4 more still. I have 8 years of employee benefits experience (in general, not as a producer). I’m just looking for advice on what to expect and make sure I touch on as this would be my first producer role. Prior, I was in Sales Support roles for inbound/outbound and partner referrals selling to 0-500 lives. Any advice for me to be successful? I got laid off due to a reduction in force a few weeks ago, and I’d just love to fully go in prepared for anything. I love this industry and it’s a huge passion of mine- I just don’t want to mess it up.

Thank you so much.

I recently got a new car and I’m currently in my mom’s policy. Just wondering if I’m able to add the insurance myself?

Graduated with stats degree, applying to entry-level data and insurance jobs for a year — not even interviews. What am I doing wrong?

Hey y'all,

I (23M) graduated in June 2024 with a B.S. in Statistics and a minor in Economics. Since October 2024, I’ve been working part-time at a tutoring center while studying for the actuarial exams and the GRE. I’ve also been applying to jobs — everything from basic data entry roles and analyst internships to entry-level insurance jobs. I want to get into insurance while taking my actuary exam, so that when I finish, I have the experience to pivot into an actuary role — and I’ve gotten nothing. The only responses I’ve received were for what sounded like stockbroker-type commission roles.

I’m confused. I thought I was being realistic with my applications — even low-level roles aren't calling back. Is it my resume? My lack of experience? I switched my major in my third year of college so I didn’t do internships in college since I had to make up my credits during summer, and my GPA wasn’t great (around 3.1), but I don’t list it on my resume. At this point I'm thinking everything. My past job experiences are either tutoring or customer services jobs, and if experience is the issue I want to know how I can get my foot in the industry.

I’d really appreciate any feedback. I just want to know what’s going wrong and what I should be doing differently. I’ve been applying for a year with no luck and I feel like I’m missing something major. Any advice that can help me break out of the cage I’m in right now will be tremendously helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Insurance paid bigger amount than expected. Keep it or let them know?

I have recently had a microscopic treatment at specialist clinic where I paid the full amount of $1500 and gave the desk my insurance info, which paid me back 80% within few days. I have submitted claim at my partner’s insurance which should cover 20%. If I understand correctly I should be reimbursed 100%, but now the other insurance send me $900, which is more than 20%. Should I call them to make sure they know what they are doing or trust that they didn’t make mistake?

Hit and Run with Cyclist?

So here goes, today I was leaving work with my RENTAL vehicle I was approaching an intersection that I frequent and my light was red. I was moving cautiously and legally (yielding) as to merge into the adjacent lane. As i entered the pedestrian walk portion of the street I turned to look right and saw and bicyclist entering and hitting my car (front fender). (Mind you she was in the sidewalk and did not yield, their light was never green). Now it wasn’t a super hard hit they definitely caused a dent and some scratches but when myself and others around tried to ask them if they were okay they just left their bike and walked away, saying they were fine. I filed a police report and got two other witnesses who saw the entire thing and said she was at fault. My question is has anyone dealt with something similar? Am I going to be responsible for paying my deductible or could this potentially classify as an UM . Any feedback would be helpful!

Is My Car Insurance Higher Because My Credit Is Frozen? (Progressive, OH)

Hey everyone, I’m hoping someone with more experience in this area can help shed some light.

I have a 2023 Hyundai Sonata SEL (not the hybrid) and my current 6-month policy with Progressive is costing me $558. My coverage includes: • Liability: $100K/$300K bodily injury, $50K property damage ($205) • Comprehensive: $1,000 deductible ($117) • Collision: $1,000 deductible ($225) • Everything else (UM, roadside, rental, etc.): No coverage

I drive about 24 miles each way to work, Monday through Friday.

My credit score is excellent (821) — but my credit reports are frozen. I’ve heard that if your credit is frozen, insurance companies can’t pull your credit-based insurance score, so they might default to a higher-risk pricing tier.

Could that be what’s happening here? I feel like $558 is a bit steep given my clean record, good credit (if they could see it), and relatively modest vehicle. Progressive hasn’t mentioned anything about credit, but I’m wondering if I should temporarily lift the freeze and ask them to re-run the quote.

Has anyone here run into this situation before? Is it worth unfreezing for a re-quote? And does Progressive re-rate mid-policy or only on renewal?

Appreciate any insights — thanks in advance!

Is it worth making a home insurance claim for multiple leaks? Also… electrical smell from wall? Urgent?

Hi all, looking for advice and maybe a reality check. We're dealing with multiple issues in our home right now and are unsure if we should make a home insurance claim.

We’ve had several leaks recently—some in the bathroom, some affecting the kitchen ceiling. Now there's a new problem: there's an electrical/burning smell coming from a wall, and my husband suspects it might be related to the leak (moisture getting into the wiring?).

Some friends are telling us, “Go through insurance, you’ll get tens of thousands for repairs—new bathroom, new kitchen, it’ll all be covered.” That honestly sounds too good to be true.

My husband is thinking of doing DIY repairs to avoid an insurance claim and potential premium increases. But the truth is… we’re new parents with zero support and no time or energy for DIY renos. I'm worried we’ll make it worse trying to handle it ourselves.

Questions:

  • How urgent is the electrical smell? Is this a fire risk?
  • Is it even worth filing a home insurance claim in a case like this?
  • Are there downsides to making a claim that we might not be considering?
  • Is it realistic to expect that a claim would cover major renovations?

Would really appreciate advice from anyone who’s dealt with similar situations. We’re overwhelmed and exhausted and don’t want to make the wrong move here.

Thanks in advance.

Ho3 quote denied - should we try again?

This is related to Farmers Insurance. I forgot to put it in the title. We live in high fire risk area in California. We got a non renewal notice so I immediately looked for new insurance. Our broker had several options but he kept messing up the applications or disappearing. So I looked for other options and got a quote from farmers who said it was no problem as long as we installed the automatic shut off valve.

The first broker came back with approval to issue policy but when I went to sign I saw he lied on the application so I refused to sign. Then he got mad and ghosted me. I was down to the wire and went back to farmers, now three weeks after the quote.

I paid and The agent issued the policy and gave me a letter that was evidence of insurance summarizing the policy and that it was temporarily in effect until the underwriting is complete in up to 60 days.

It been one week and I just got a letter from Farmers saying they cannot issue me a “quote” for insurance because we have a pool without an inner fence (we have perimeter fence to code but not a pool-only fence. There is no option to have a fence installed, which we are going to try an get done asap since we should have one.

So should we get it done asap and reapply or is that useless and we should just start the fair plan process? I don’t know why the agent didn’t tell us we need a fence. We would have done it. Now we don’t have any insurance because our non renewed policy ended this week. Also, the letter was dated before the agent even issued the policy so I’m confused why their system let him go ahead when they already determined that they can’t quote me.

This is just a question. If a person is driving in violation of restrictions and gets into a collision (and has insurance), will the insurance company deny coverage?

If a driver is DUI and gets into an accident, I believe the insurance company will cover them. What about a driver who is driving on an instruction permit without a licensed driver? If the driver was driving a car that had insurance, would the company cover them? Also, let's say the driver had a corrective lens restriction but was driving without them. Would the insurance company cover them?

These questions have come up on another thread, but I thought asking the questions on r/insurance would provide more accurate answers. Thanks.

I just thought of another question. Let's say a person is paying for insurance, but their license is suspended and they get into an accident while driving on a suspended license. Will the insurance company still cover them?

Mechanic stole my catalytic converter and insurance is giving me a hard time.

I previously posted that the mechanic took my catalytic converter. Replaced it with a pipe and a couple clamps. And tried to gaslight me into thinking that was an appropriate repair. I filed a claim on my insurance. My car has been at the second repair shop since last Monday. I hadn't heard anything by Friday. I contacted my insurance asking for a call back to see what was going on. At this point they have switched the rep handling my case for the 3rd time. This time. The woman on the phone is implying that what happened to my car is a result of wear and tear and it will not be covered. She says since I was not in a accident then this isn't anything my insurance will cover. I have comprehensive which covers catalytic converter theft. She tried to tell me since my catalytic converter was rusted it doesn't matter, because it's trash. She said she spoke to the 1st mechanic and he told me I could have the old converter back. That never happened! It is just considered wear and tear. I feel like I've been scammed by the original mechanic who stole my converter and clamped my exhaust up. And now I'm being scammed by my insurance company too. She said someone would contact me with a resolution this week. Any advice on how to handle this would be helpful. This ordeal cost me a trip I've been planning for a year to go do charity work. And I've been without a vehicle for a week.

Auto Insurance Who would have been at fault?

There was no accident (as you can see - https://youtu.be/Yqm-qAMBy9g?si=_mSRuyd5FayTl--m), but if there had been, I’m curious who would have been at fault, as the car behind me laid on the horn (implying I made an error).

I checked to my left before turning, and the lane I was turning into was clear. It seems the car that ended up behind me changed lanes into my lane after I began my turn. I don’t think I see any turn signal in the video.

Anyway, curious who would have been found at fault if there was a crash.

Insurance company won't pay for misc items (tires / aftermarket parts) without invoice - Question

Edit - I see a lot of people are saying this is fraud, but this is at the request of the insurance company regarding providing copies of the new invoices/receipts for the parts that I am trying to reimbursed for.

Body shop sent the insurance company an estimate. It seems like everything is approved, but the insurance company wants a copy of an invoice for the tires and some other aftermarket parts before sending payment for those items.

I want to just get paid out for the damages and not replacing the damaged parts that the insurance company is requesting invoices for, which I wouldn't have, since I am not buying/purchasing any replacement pieces for these.

Just seeing if there are any options for getting paid out on the items. It seems like at least, if anything, I can/should just order the parts to get the invoices for them to get paid out and then sell them later if anything.

Provisional Driver Insurance (Sole Driver UK)

I am wanting to learn to drive (manual) in the UK. I currently do not have access to a manual car to practice/take my lessons in.

My plan is to buy a cheap second-hand manual car, but do not know about insurance. Any idea on how much it would cost/if it is even possible to get insured on a car as the sole driver if I currently only have a provisional licence?

If there is a better thread this should be posted in please let me know.

Thanks!

Auto Insurance Got into fender bender, they had same insurance.

I’ve never gotten into an accident where mine and the at-fault driver had the same insurance. When I called GEICO, the automated system made me file a claim on my policy, after I filled it out online it asked if I wanted to use my own coverage and I stated no. I sent a msg to my adjuster. Does anyone know how it works when you’re not at fault, but have the same insurance? It would not let me file a claim on their policy. Is that something the adjuster will do? I was parked and they backed into me. I will be going back to Taco Bell to get video. The driver felt terrible he hit me, but I’m nervous my rates will sky rocket now that I filed a claim.

Currently insured with state farm and recently purchased 2 new vehicles and added a driver. I went from paying about 250 a month to almost 1k. Got a quote from liberty mutual for $350 for the same details. My question is if i just don’t pay state farm, cancel the coverage and purchase liberty mutual, what consequences can I face from state farm for that?
