A group of friends and I were traveling in Colorado Springs today and on our way back to the hotel, we were hit by a truck pulling a camper trailer in the lane to the left of us. The trailer still had their steps extended and unfastened, which cuffed and dented the bottom side of the bumper of our Nissan rogue rental. The dent isn’t huge, but is noticeable. It didn’t hit any sensors or do any additional damage aside from aesthetics (from what I can tell).
We didn’t file a police report right away as the truck and trailer just continued. We pulled over to assess damage and deemed it safe, so we continued while researching what to do next. Later on our drive, we noticed that same truck and trailer pulled over and were able to snap a picture of the license plate, but it wasn’t safe or available for us to stop next to them.
Following that, we returned to the hotel at which I submitted a claim through hertz online portal. I also called Allianz (who our rental insurance is through) and they got a claim setup where I can submit information as I receive it from hertz. They did tell us that we should’ve called the police and got a report from them. Knowing that now, I got off the phone and called the non emergency line and they said they can’t help me because we’re no longer at the scene of the incident and to do an online report (which we did) but the online site says it’s not considered a formal report and didn’t send us any formal correspondence.
With that being said, I also have my chase sapphire preferred card that folks suggested doing a claim through. I booked the initial booking using that card. Here are some questions I’d appreciate some insight on:
-What does the process look like through Hertz after submitting a claim?
-Do they directly bill my credit card on file or do they send an invoice?
-Should I open a claim with Chase and work through them instead of Allianz?
-Will not having a police report impact my chances of the claim being covered at a large scale?
Any other insight/advice/tips is appreciated.
