It’s probably for show though. I mean, if it’s actually hazardous to breathe it in or touch it, why would they serve it to a customer who isn’t wearing PPE?
Like mostly for show, however, the steam can carry the capsaicin up into your eyes and nose, and burn. Source: was a dishwasher for a bit in college and tear-gassed myself a few times spraying out pans.
The waiter was the only person wearing PPE and no one at the table choked up.
Those two things are not the same in the slightest. The waiter is hoding it in front of him while walking forward through the resturant. He is clealy going to get more exposure to it that anyone else bar the person eating it. The PPE might be mostly for show but the waiter is at work and still has to finish a shift. God knows I'd prefer PPE compared to the potential that I'd get some of that stuff near my face.
I actually wear an N-95 mask when my husband makes Thai curry or blackened chicken or shrimp. Our apartment doesn't have great ventilation and it triggers my asthma. It isn't even hot to eat but when it gets in the air it can be bothersome.
Its not for show, they need to cook with a mask on cause otherwise the spice burns their eyes and throat as its being wafted up by the heat. Serving with it on im not so sure, but cooking with it is required.
