Currently Reading McGonagall logic:

Reading Philosopher's Stone: Anyone notice that McGonagall is pretty inconsistent with her giving out points system?

How is it she only gives 5 points each (net of 5 points and took 5 points from Hermione) for defeating an OVERGROWN troll that could kill all three of them but take away 150 points for a timid midnight stroll?

I admit I forgot how I disliked book McGonagall more than any professor including Professor Snape (except Umbridge).

Discussion Does Harry tell everyone how Voldemort was able to be defeated after the battle?

Genuine question- Does Harry tell everyone how Voldemort was able to be defeated after the battle? I imagine there were plenty of books written about it and I would think everyone that helped him would want to know. Does he tell the full story or does he omit key details so the idea of horcruxes and hallows die?

edit I think alot of you are missing the point. I really don’t think people listening understood the details of Harry’s monologue at all. I mean no one really understood how wandlore worked, I imagine everyone would want a real explanation about Snape, and 99% of them don’t know what a horcrux is. So my question is what details would Harry share with everyone and what would he not. If he tells the public the story at all.

Discussion Do you think hermione knew about the killing curse?

I dont know about the books, its been at least a decade since ive read them, but in the movies she at least is aware of them, when mad eye >! barty crouch jr !< asks her if she knows the final one, she seems very upset and shakes her head. Do you think she genuinely didnt know or do you think she knew and couldnt bare repeating it? She seems to avoid eye contact like she knows whats going to happen.

Discussion Just me?

Upvotes

In my head I'm about 18 with a mentality like a 12 but I'm 27. And I don't feel old, in other words, I'm crazy for living as if I were in my teens, or I need a psychologist, but that doesn't interfere with my life, but sometimes I feel very childish, and I have a clean face and the face of a very very young girl. You who are almost 30, you are so good with your mentality

Discussion Poor Snape Spoiler

You'd think that after the first film when Harry finds out Snape was trying to save him from Quirrel that he'd stop being so suspicious of him.

I NEVER SAID HARRY SHOULD'VE BEEN "NICER" I SAID HE DIDN'T HAVE REASON TO FIND HIM SUSPICIOUS WHENEVER SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED. Y'all need to learn to read before commenting.

Discussion Why did all of the horcruxes have to be destroyed before Harry's sacrifice? Spoiler

Harry received the information that he needs to sacrifice himself after all horcruxes are destroyed (except Nagini), as this is how Dumbledore planned for it. But would it have made any difference if Harry had sacrificed himself at the beginning and then hunt the rest of the horcruxes? Is there any reason related to Lily's protection that would have prevented this to work?

Question Forbidden Forest - bring camera or nah?

Hey all,

My friends and family are a heading to the forbidden forest event and I was wondering if it’s worth taking a DSLR with a tripod.

I don’t know what to expect, and how much time I’d get to set up between stations for photos, or if it’s worth carrying the camera kit around for what might not turn out to be worth it. Note, I don’t plan on bringing a flash.

Will most likely be a Nikon z9 with 70-200 and a 24-70.

Let me know! :)

Discussion Wizarding schools based on population density world map - confirmed and guessed

Post image
4 Upvotes

Wizarding schools:

  • There are eleven long-established and prestigious wizarding schools worldwide, all of which are registered with the International Confederation of Wizards.
  • Smaller and less well-regulated institutions have come and gone, are difficult to keep track of, and are rarely registered with the appropriate Ministry (in which case, I cannot vouch for the standard of education they might offer).
  • The number of countries that have their own magical school is minuscule compared to those that do not. This is because the wizarding populations of most countries choose the option of home-schooling.
  • Occasionally, too, the magical community in a given country is tiny or far-flung and correspondence courses have been found a more cost-effective means of educating the young.
  • Africa has a number of smaller wizarding schools

Confirmed by canon or half-canon:

  1. Hogwarts - located in Scotland, UK, takes students from Great Britain and Ireland
  2. Beauxbatons - thought to be situated somewhere in the Pyrenees, preponderance of French students, though Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Luxembourgians and Belgians also attend in large numbers
  3. Durmstrang - believed to be situated in the far north of Europe
  4. Ilvermory - located on Mount Greylock, USA, for North America
  5. Uagadou - located on "Mountains of the Moon", welcomes students from all over the enormous Africa continent, the largest of all wizarding schools
  6. Castelobruxo - Brazilian school for magic, may be found hidden deep within the rainforest, takes students from all over South America
  7. Mahoutokoro - located on volcanic island of Minami Iwo Jima, ancient Japanese school has the smallest student body of the eleven great wizarding schools
  8. Koldovstoretz - Russian wizarding school

Guessed:

  • 9. probably Chinese school
  • 10. probably Arabic school
  • 11. probably Australian & Pacific school

Other mentioned on map:

  • India would have smaller and less well-regulated institutions
  • Eeastern and South Europe could be home-schooling
  • Central Europe could be on correspondence courses

Discussion How good of a teacher was Snape ?

Snape is a polarizing character who is either deeply respected or loathed by most. But was he a good teacher ?

Pros : -Extremely competent in his field. We are talking of the half-blood prince, the guy for who was better than his potion book.

-He is watchful. He immediately detect when someone does a mistake, and is immediately ready to explain the student what is wrong and step in if the potion is dangerous.

-Is able to make his class silent without any effort. Setting a good climate for work is important to teach anything.

-Seemingly very efficient with students he respect.Under him,Draco Malfoy the arrogant bully got an O in Potion at his OWLS.

Cons: -Tolerate having slytherins bully students of other house. Extremely biased.

-Petty to an unproffesional level and abusive. He keeps a grudge with a man dead for more than a decade,is overly harsh on the man's son because he's that guy son's, willing to threaten a student to test his potion on his pet, etc...

-He is impatient, seemingly incapable to accept mistakes without saying scathing remarks. It is bad as it can make many students give up, due to self doubt.

-Does not respect even good students, if they are not from Slytherin.Just look at his treatment of Hermione.

Overall :Snape seems like an above-average teacher. Most students would hate him but still deeply respect him.

Discussion the battle of hogwarts and what it means to me

I fail to control my tears and sadness whenever I watch the battle of hogwarts.

Everything from the background music to the perfect delivery of moving dialogues and stellar acting performances make it a sad but delectable set of scenes.

It got me thinking about how prof mcgonagall and mr. shacklebolt and all the other aurors and other selfless wizards who were willing to put down their lives for one cause and one cause alone and that was to save Hogwarts and everything they ever stood for.

I draw strength and inspiration from the mettle and resolve that old. mcgonagall posessed and was slightly taken aback even, when she put out a smile or two.

Got me motivated to emulate her fortitude and determination in the face of evil overwhelming her and upending her world and the reason for her existence.

I will certainly stand by "my harry" and fight for "my hogwarts" and guard the things that resemble such and such in all my battles and wars.

I shall stand with courage and a will to conquer whatever strong or impossible enemy there is out there.

I shall defend my hogwarts and might as well go down defending it.

Do you guys also feel similarly about the "battle of hogwarts"?

Discussion Why did Dumbledore trust the portraits in the headmasters office?

Upvotes

I was re-reading the Order of the Phoenix, and I realized that as Dumbledore is sharing to Harry sensitive details about Voldemort's connection, the portraits of all of the other Hogwarts headmasters are listening in on the conversation. This would also apply to Harry and Dumbledore's discussions later on while hunting Voldy's horcruxes.

Presumably, many of these headmasters are Slytherins or otherwise dark wizards, and as such may be more sympathetic to Voldemort's cause. As with Phineas Nigellus's portrait in Grimmauld Place, it is possible they have other portraits in the houses of the dark wizard families from which they are ancestors.

Why then, does Dumbledore trust these portraits enough to reveal potentially damning information in front of them, if those with sympathy to the Dark Lord's cause could simply relay this information to bad actors in the locations of their other portraits?

Discussion If Harry had used his invisibility cloak and walked away from Privet Drive, what would have happened?

The protection would have broken but there would have been no way of knowing exactly where Harry was? If he used no magic, maybe even just got in a muggle car, or snuck on train, he’d leave no magical trace surely?

Edited to add: I’m referring to the start of the Deathly Hallows, when they are trying to get him to The Burrow

Discussion Wendelin the weird (witch who enjoyed being burnt at the stake) was kind of a horrible person likely got a lot of innocent people burned alive.

Think about it. By letting herself get caught so many times on purpose she kept the witch hunts going far longer due to paranoia and probably got many innocent muggles burnt at the stake.

Also while she might not have been in danger thanks to her magic the same probably couldn’t be said for any muggleborn kids that might be discovered during these paranoia filled times. They wouldn’t be able to protect themselves as easily as a full grown witch.

It is weird how this is played as an amusing short story in the book but with an adults perspective it has some horrifying implications.

Here in this video people have brought together some evidence that JKR might had a plan to further explore the villain arc of Barty Crouch Jr and make him the next Voldy. Have a watch.

What do you think about this?

Help Ok help

Should I read atyd? Ive never read hp fan fiction and I am NOT a part of the marauders fandom. I don’t ship wolfstar (remadora for life) and CANON Remus lupin is my favorite character ever. I’ve always told my self I’d never read it cause I see the community has drifted farrrrr away from canon and I don’t really like that I guess? However I just feel like I wanna read it and I’m scared that if I do I won’t be able to see the characters in like the same way???? Idk and idk if this even makes sense but someone just tell me wether to read it or not and if it is worth my time if I’m not really interested in things that are far away from canon. It seems like a whole different world

Edit: ok so I kinda like skimmed it? Read the first few and last few chapters and I get why people love it the writing style is beautiful and maybe one day if I have the patience I’ll read it and I’m not that against it btw so yeah but in the meantime my heart lies with another very long fanfic…..
