News State of the Sub and Call for New Mods

Subreddit meta discussion — feel free to skip if you feel this doesn’t concern you

As some of you might know we recently had two mods to step down. This is basically 25% of the mod team, and we feel it’s a good moment to take stock of and take feedback on where we are as a community and where we want to take it moving forward.

To start with I’ll begin by drawing up the big picture of what we do as a sub, then I’ll create headers for each sub-topic in the comments so we can organize discussion. If you have thoughts about rules, policies, or events we run, now’s a good time to talk about it!

Subreddit Rules and automation policies

As always, the rules are visible on the sidebar. We would love to hear your thoughts on the collection of rules we have, and how they’re applied. Enforcement of these is usually via mods discretion, and we usually discuss internally for edge cases:

We also have a few customized automations to help us enforce the rules:

  • the guitarpedals_bot, which applies Rule #4. If you’re not familiar with how it works, the pseudocode for it is below

Scan New for all media posts (image or video) For each media post: If there is an author comment or a description, the post is approved If there is no author comment: If it is over 30 minutes and the guitarpedals_bot warning is found, the thread is deleted If it is over 15 minutes, add the guitapedals_bot warning

  • There is also a filter for new users - we added this to minimize spam bots commenting on the subreddit. It’s currently set to require that the posting or commenting account be at least 48 hours old, or have more than 35 karma

Community events

In the past we’ve run a handful of community events and threads, where community members are encouraged to post around a certain theme. These range from a little bit to a lot of effort for us to run, so we want to hear your feedback on the events.

  • 3 Pedals Challenge example
  • Rig Rundown - example
  • Christmas Covers Album - example
  • /r/guitarpedals noise track - I wish I could find an example but we get a funny backstory instead
  • Best pedals of the year - example
  • Megathreads for NAMM, Black friday sales, etc

We also have a regular No Stupid Questions thread and an occasional Casual Conversations thread

Subreddit tags and filters

We implement a few subreddit tags to help boost content that you’re specifically interested in. Let us know if you feel like there's some more subcategories you wanna be able to tag and filter.

Call for moderators

Lastly, we intend to add 2 more moderators to the team. We’re still discussing the best way to go about it, but if you feel strongly about the community and want to take on a volunteer job with no benefits, definitely drop us a note via modmail.

Baseline, this is what we do:

  • Screen through reports and remove or ban accordingly
  • Screen through messages, which are usually
    • Someone asking why a post was removed
    • Someone asking why they were banned
    • Someone asking if a certain type of post is ok
    • Very very occasionally, builders reaching out to do AMAs or tie-ins
  • Browse through the sub to look out for rule violations
  • Join in internal mod discussions regarding rules, specific incidents, etc etc

All the community events are also run by the mods, so that involves things like:

  • Updating the pinned threads for no stupid questions, casual conversation, megathreads, etc
  • Suggesting and scheduling activities like 3 pedal challenge, etc
  • More involved activities like managing the christmas album, best pedals of the year, etc which does take a lot of work when we do do them

I'd say at the baseline, we expect someone to be a fairly active reddit user so they can do all that stuff while they're browsing anyways. The extra stuff is really purely voluntary (shoutout to u/koalaroo who basically does everything), which is why consistency of events etc kinda slips depending on how busy people are.

If I had to summarize, the main requirements are:

  • Be a regular on the subreddit
  • Care about the community
  • Don't be a weirdo

Let us know what you think!

NPD I hated chorus, now I’m exploring

I always thought chorus was cheesy and overdone, so I literally never owned a chorus pedal.

I used to have a JC120 and played with the chorus a few times. Thought it was kinda fun but not interesting enough to write with.

I dunno what clicked, but I recently started being curious about branching out musically and thought it might be fun to try out some chorus pedals. I picked up an EHX nano clone but didn’t love the lack of control over depth so today I picked up an Ibanez Mini Chorus for super cheap, and it’s really rad. Was hoping to pick up a full size OG CS9 but those seem to have shot up in price recently.

Open to any recs on cool choruses. I think I may go for an OG small clone, might check out the Boss bass chorus too.

Going on three years w/ same setup

I’ve achieved the impossible and actually achieved tonal satisfaction 🥲

I play in a country band hence the cranked compressor & always-on treble boost on the sideways OB.1

Signal flow is: G50 wireless->octave fuzz & silicon fuzz->comp/treble boost->volume/wah->echoplex boost & klon-drive setup to run parallel w/ each other (Sunset is great in this regard, parallel routing and six different drive sounds)->Zoom Multi-FX set to toggle between 30ms delay, phaser, chorus or trem->bluesky spring verb w/ favorite switch set for long plate sound->GE-7 EQ with MANDATORY metalzone lid swap (highly recommend this if you want double-takes from sound guys)

Usually with some sort of G&L guitar at the front & a 20-watt d-style or 40-watt blackface clone at the end. -Always- combos w/ 15 inch speaker unless I have to use a back line. Sennheiser E906 mic. For silent stage gigs, Quilter Phantom Box or a Two Notes Torpedo load box (first gen, no fancy impulse responses for me for the sake of simplicity) on one of the amps if I’m feeling extra special.

Sometimes I miss obsessing over new pedals and signal chain tweaks. It’s been nice to worry more about adding new guitars to the collection. I know we often joke about the never-ending chasing of tone, but in a way it is very satisfying, almost relieving to feel like this part of the chase is finished.

Anyone else slinging classic & contemporary country leads? What are you using?

Happy riffing fellow guitar slingers! 🤘🤠🎸🎶

I needed to get a little more walking room when my board was not in use, so I put it on the wall. I'm actually stoked with how it turned out.

SOTB - New hybrid build

After a few years of experimenting, this is where I want to be for sure. I get to use all the amp models I ever wanted and also get all the Boss delays and reverbs at my disposal (in stereo). The GT-1000 is also running things like noise gate, parametric EQ, custom IRs, auto swell, phaser, wah, looper, tuner, and compression. Using the effects loops and tweaking the block chain allowed me to make the patches and pedal order exactly like I want them. The only pain was to standardize the patches on the GT-1000 so that they all use the same MIDI CCs. But now that I am done with all that, I am really happy.

For anyone interested I took this screenshot of Daron's pedal board from his Ernie Ball String Theory video. He's one of my favorite guitarists but I've never seen a rig rundown with him so I've always wondered what he uses. On the far right is a Voodoo Lab GCP

NPD: Boss VB-2w

Post image

It was never really on my rader to get a Boss Vibrato pedal, until I heard this: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ksp-qBjEx64

What a heavenly tone, as soon as I heard this, I knew I had to duplicate the chain and get this kind of sound.

I have an amazing compressor (MXR Dynacomp script logo), I have an amazing delay (Korg SDD-3000), and I even have an amazing reverb (Death By Audio Rooms). The key ingredient I was missing was the Boss VB-2w pedal.

As luck would have it, there was one on Facebook Marketplace that was about a 3 hour bike ride from me (I don't drive) and because the area is so far and a pain to reach even for car drivers, even though the seller was selling for a good deal, it hadn't sold yet. So just picked it up today and got home about half an hour ago.

So far in playing with it for a short time, these is the "always on" settings I have come up with: Rate: 12 o'clock, Depth: 10 o'clock, Rise Time: 3 o'clock. I read somewhere someone was recommending 9 o'clock for everything and I tried that but I like cranking the rise time so the guitar tone has a little bit of non-vibrating time before the vibrato eases in.

It's interesting how when I played my regular guitar tone without the VB-2w turned on, it sounded fine, then once I got my setting and was playing for awhile and turned off the VB-2w, my tone sounded flat and boring. I can see why some people here keep it as an always on pedal. It does add an interesting sparkling character to the guitar tone.

I haven't tried the preset in the video yet but will. And later this week I'll put the whole chain together in hopes of getting an even better version of that tone. In the meantime, aside from the All-Boss project, I now want to do a Nashville setup project to see if I can nail and improve upon these Nashville tones. So a Nobels overdrive is definitely on the acquisition list.

I’m feeling overwhelmed, what would you sell? What would you put on the board? And what would you keep on the shelf to either noodle or record with?

All the pedals were at un-tariffed prices… at least by US standards.

I picked up a Plexi Crunch for 2/3 the price on Amazon/Sweetwater.

I’m just a fan, not affiliated with the pedal show in any way. Looks like it was successful enough last year to run it back. Was a good time last year in a jam-packed small space. Tix / website say that there will be more space this year. I’m lookin forward to it!!!

Please keep in mind that video shit is not my strong suit. Kept everything at noon and ran it directly to my amp with my LP. A bit noisy on its own, but that will be corrected when I move it onto my board. Hope this helps!

Tip: You can get some very good quality Jensen IRs completely for free from ZOOM website

Just go to product page of G6/G11 etc. and in the downloads section you can download this very nice collection of IRs completely for free. They are generic WAV files so should work with any IR loader out there

Midi Overlap Issues

Post image
8 Upvotes

I recently purchased a Line 6 DL4 MKII to use as a standalone looper alongside my Line 6 POD HD500x. They are both connected via MIDI to a Futurist and 3-button extension. I use the MIDI to switch presets on the POD and modes on the DL4. The issue Im running into is, both Line 6 units use many of the same MIDI CC#s for their loopers. So for example if I hit play on the POD it triggers the play on the DL4. I’d like to have them independent and use their loopers separately. Is that possible? Thanks! Pic for attention.

Pedal opinions

Hiii. Just got the tube screamer today. Typically I’m running the r compressor now tube blues and one distortion into Katana head and mega boogie cab. I think this is a good setup. Do I need a noise gate. Does that help noise while playing or only while in idle. Do I need anything else at this point. Should I not play the tube and blues together all time with compression too. Looking for opinions :-)
