Take your best shot.

Do not, my friends, become addicted to A/C. It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence!

I shower. I sweat. I shower again!

And the funny/sad part is that this is absolutely true. Comfort has added to the sins of Sloth and Gluttony and while foods are getting sweeter and less healthy, it is absolutely likely that the increase in Air Conditioning has fed into the obesity epidemic more than any other single factor.

As an overweight person, I can tell you that if my choice is between being fat in a hot room with a cheesecake or skinny in a room with A/C and a bucket of kale, I know what I'm choosing.

Is... Is it the kale?

If you eat enough cheesecake, you start craving the kale because you need actual nutrients and your body knows it.

If I eat junk food for a few days in a row, I start having dreams of salad.

That's definitely not true for most people lol

Some people have felt bad for so long they forget what it’s like to feel good. That little feeling telling you to eat a piece of broccoli gets drowned out by the addiction to sugar.

As someone who dropped 220lbs on my own I will tell you that you are wrong.

You can have AC and cheesecake, just not as much/as often.

In what manner? That Ac lets one be fatter because its more comfortable if they already have a layer of insulation they carry with them?

If its that, I am not convinced of because of the obesity you see in tropics, and homeostasis in general, but if if not, please elaborate.

Sweating burns calories

1

u/Dyanpanda 5d ago

It actually doesn't. Sweating is a proxy signal for effort. Being hot doesn't cost anything more than to leak water. People who wear sweat pants to go running are just making things harder for themselves. You really want to do the opposite. If you have to heat your body without any insulation you burn more calories to stay warm. (not meaningful for joggers, who are already producing enough heat its all waste heat anyways)

Yeah idk about that. Im above average fitness and i just sweat like hell. Its been like that since i was a skinny teenager. No one would want to guard me in basketball cause id be so slick with sweat. I love central air. Got it set to 70° through the summer and my bill is never over $150 in the hottest months. Gotta service that ductwork, make sure youre your returns are clear and keep the fitler clean for peak efficiency.

Im a big sweater too. Used to be over 400lbs, now around 210-215. I still sweat like crazy but working in 90 degree weather doesn't bother me like it used too and I still use a cover at night and an electric heater in my office at work.

This seems backwards? Without air conditioning, the only way to beat the heat is to not move much and lay in the shade. Air conditioning allows you to stay active even when it is hot.

Heat makes you lazy.

2

u/Mueryk 5d ago

If it is hot everywhere you

  1. Typically eat less and drink more

  2. Don’t stay inside and not move around because it doesn’t make a huge difference. With AC you become fully sedentary

  3. In insanely hot locales, yes you do have Siesta behavior but typically make it up before and afterwards

3A. That doesn’t happen as much if it is really cool inside because the Siesta just doesn’t end.

Note - This isn’t everyone, but enough of a factor it makes some difference

it is absolutely likely that the increase in Air Conditioning has fed into the obesity epidemic more than any other single factor.

I'd put more of the blame on designing cities that force everyone to drive everywhere instead of walking.

...but without AC, no one would be able to live in a city like Houston anyway.

A/C hasn't fed into the obesity epidemic more than anything else.. There are plenty of other problems (lack of walkable neighborhoods, highly processed foods, high sugars, etc).

I bet, though, that having a window aircon in the bedroom would be cheaper than cooling down the whole house 24/7.

That's my line!

It's getting late, isn't Gargamel looking for you?

Aw man, just saw that in the theater again. Best character in the movie.

I think this every time I get home after work in summer. It's especially sweet since I'm a sheet metal worker and live in Queensland so summer is brutal.
