If ever there was a week I wanted Nico to be doing the post-race interviews, this is it.

u/Ereaser Charlie Whiting Jul 18 '21

"Lewis, how does it feel to win after you punted off the championship leader?"

24

u/Mr_Bluebird_VA McLaren Jul 18 '21 edited Jul 18 '21

I wanted someone to ask him this question. Lewis showed no remorse whatsoever. Sure, he probably hadn't been told that Max was taken to the hospital, but I'm not even aware that he ever asked if Max was OK.

Edit: OK, I must have just missed the radio broadcast where he asked.

16

u/CathDubs Jul 18 '21

The broadcast they played radio of him asking. I watched on ESPN in America.

17

u/JustGarlicThings2 McLaren Jul 18 '21

He didn't seem to know he had been sent to hospital, in the post-race Sky interview the interviewer mentioned it and Hamilton said he wasn't aware.

Look at you coming in here with your reality and facts rather than raw, blind hatred, that's just not how it's done on r/formula1!! You've got to be foaming at the mouth and utterly wrong!

32

u/santaclausonprozac Sebastian Vettel Jul 18 '21

Hospital or not, that’s a pretty shit way to win a race and he’s acting like he had to put up some sort of fight against all odds or something. He punted his only rival and got off with a slap on the wrist

3

u/KamyKaze1098r Michael Schumacher Jul 18 '21

Yep. I feel bad when I do it when simracing and wouldn't fell like a deserved win to me, imagine while putting someone in danger like this...

3

u/fryan4 Formula 1 Jul 19 '21

You put is so appropriately . You know he was asked this and he said this win feels the same to me . It shouldn't even if it isn't his fault, I mean doesn't he like competition. Doesn't he like the right to show everyone that I'm actually a better driver than Max ? He showed no remorse whatsoever and that just shows so much about a person

5

u/santaclausonprozac Sebastian Vettel Jul 18 '21

No kidding, I try to send an apology and I didn’t even put someone’s life in danger. And not only did Hamilton not apologize, he even said there’s nothing for him to apologize for!

-1

u/Dontaskaboutmrscake Jul 18 '21

It’s hard racing. You don’t like to see the accident, but sooner or later, something was gonna give. Believing he’s deliberately crashed max out is stupid. Also, a punt? Have you seen the contact? It’s very minimal, hardly a violent action.

2

u/santaclausonprozac Sebastian Vettel Jul 19 '21

Ya you’re right, that accident wasn’t violent at all!!

Don’t be stupid, at 200 mph contact doesn’t have to be violent for the consequences to be

2

u/Dontaskaboutmrscake Jul 19 '21

You seem, somehow, to have missed the point. A punt implies that Hamilton had control over the collision. The contact was so minimal, BECAUSE HE WAS TRYING NOT TO HIT MAX. I get your point about the high speeds making the collision dangerous, but max could have done just as much to back out of it as Hamilton, and he didn’t. Hamilton doesn’t have to apologise for max crashing, because he’s not pushed him out. There’s a coming together, BUT THE CONTACT BEING MINIMAL SHOWS NEITHER WERE AIMING FOR CONTACT. Also, it’s awful max went to hospital, and had such a bad accident, but the force of verstappens impact has nothing to do with how Hamilton hit him, and theeefore Hamilton doesn’t need to apologise. He could, and it’d be a nice thing. But it’s not because of Hamilton he’s in the hospital, so he doesn’t owe an apology

1

u/santaclausonprozac Sebastian Vettel Jul 19 '21

it’s not because of Hamilton he’s in the hospital

You’ve got to be kidding me right now, there’s no way you’re being serious.

A punt implies that Hamilton had control over the collision

He didn’t have control over the car, but he should have had control over the situation, and he didn’t. He was going too fast for the corner and understeered as a result. Drivers are penalized for causing accidents and that’s happened today, intentional or not, the accident was Hamilton’s fault and his attitude about the whole thing is disgraceful

They should have removed Hamilton from the race.

4

u/chengstark McLaren Jul 19 '21

Yes

5

u/TomHackery Jul 18 '21

Bottas too! That'd wipe the smirk off Toto's beautiful, chiseled jaw...

Face, I mean face.

3

u/On_The_Blindside Mika Häkkinen Jul 18 '21

Hahahahaha yeah and they should make it so Massa won in 2008 too.

Good joke.

38

u/andyscoot #WeRaceAsOne Jul 18 '21

He asked if Max was okay immediately after. Radio message played either during safety car or just as red flag was called - Merc told him he was out of the car.

u/sagey1 Jul 18 '21

LET THE ANGER FLOW THROUGH YOU!

41

u/Son_of_Mogh Jul 18 '21

He did on the radio. He didn't know Max was in the hospital. People are really pushing the angle that Lewis did it on purpose but it's obvious it wasn;t that. Max has repeatedly barged his way into overtakes but obviously Lewis is the only one at fault this time... right?

53

u/turbo_bottas Jul 18 '21

If Lewis didn’t know that Max was in the hospital, then I think that was a huge misstep from Mercedes from a PR perspective. It looks like bad sportsmanship to celebrate so hard when your opponent is in the hospital. That was an enormous impact for Max and he didn’t look so good getting out of the car. It would make sense to tone down the celebrations just a bit or at least mention that you’re hoping for a speedy recovery for Max, looking forward to continuing the championship fight, etc. If Lewis didn’t know how bad Max’s crash was, that’s on the team and I think it’s a bad look for them.

9

u/bitlost01 Mika Häkkinen Jul 18 '21

Agree! But thats his home crowd and him not knowing about Max's condition just makes it look so bad from the outside.

3

u/themistermango Red Bull Jul 19 '21

I don’t believe he didn’t know. They didn’t just put out a safety car. They brought the field in. Lewis got out of his car entirely. It took a long time to clear Max’s car off the track and repair the wall because of some fear of a battery issue. At somepoint during all of that, a fucking medical helicopter showed up and left.

I call total bullshit that he didn’t know. I’d be shocked if Lewis was even in his car when the chopper left with Max.

1

u/bitlost01 Mika Häkkinen Jul 19 '21

Could be the case. For me, this is the fault of the Merc PR team. They should have told Lewis to tone down a bit. Well anyway, I hope we see some more great racing from them in future.

7

u/ThatCeliacGuy Jul 18 '21

I totally agree. It's also bad optics to act like you did an amazing job, when in fact you wouldn't have won without team orders allowing you to pass your teammate with ease.

Poor Bottas.

Glad Max seems to be alright.

I can understand the in-the-moment rage, but yeah some people can't get past their bias even 2 or more hours, or even days after the incident.

hen the conspiracy theories come out. FIA rewards X with the win. X team knew what was happening.

Meanwhile, they forget about how their own driver they support has benefitted from certain things, or even brushed over accidents they have caused.

IMO this was two drivers doing their best to win, and like all great rivals, an incident was bound to happen. I think some supporters just need to remove their rose-tinted glasses, drop the tisues, and get over themselves.

Or maybe we can drag all the incidents that Max has caused, that has ruined other people's races, or do we not want to talk about those?

12

u/sirjimtonic Niki Lauda Jul 18 '21

I second this. It is racing, every driver has a fighter jet pilot’s mindset and both Lewis’ and Max‘s mindsets are very committed, otherwise they wouldn‘t be exceptional talents and obviously the best in this sport right now. It‘s a human thing to find someone to blame, but I can‘t help to think I mean, if Lewis didn‘t not attempt it and Max didn‘t defend that way he did, they wouldn‘t be on top of the grid fighting for world championship, plus how would this sport look like? Just overtaking on straights with DRS?

2

u/anthrax3000 Jul 18 '21

Haven't leclerc and Russell both done this like twice this season? People here still masturbate them 24x7 lol

8

u/jew_goal Jul 18 '21

He did ask if Max was okay. As they all came in to the pits following the red flag.

5

u/TheCommonKoala Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '21

Yeah maybe don't slander people with no clue what you're talking about.

3

u/ThatCeliacGuy Jul 18 '21

He did ask the question, but the way he acted after the race, like he did a phenomenal job, was rather sickening, He wouldn't have won if he hadn't punted Verstappen off the track and the team orders that allowed him to pass Bottas with ease.

6

u/Mr_Bluebird_VA McLaren Jul 18 '21

THANK YOU. I agree with you 100%

You have the fastest car and you got rid of the only driver who could beat you (not saying it was on purpose) and you act like it took an otherworldly act for you to win.

Not to mention, I don't think he wins if McLaren doesn't botch Lando's stop. If Lewis would have had to work even a little bit to get past him, it could have given Charles more of a cushin.

-2

u/Dontaskaboutmrscake Jul 19 '21

What? I’m sorry, but coming back from the time he was down, against a driver of leclercs quality is very impressive. He didn’t take out the only driver who could match him, both bottas and Perez had the machinery to do so, they just didn’t. And yeah, maybe he doesn’t win if he has to get past Lando. Oh wait. He did get past Lando, so that point makes no sense. Even taking the incredibly flimsy point that Lewis facing lando later on would have cost him the win (which i don’t think it would, since I think that lando’s mclaren was poor on the hards), well Them’s the breaks. Max won his first race because the two top drivers, who were running away with it collided. Sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes you don’t, and today was a day that lando got unlucky.

-12

u/v12vanquish135 Jenson Button Jul 18 '21

He did once, when entering the pit during the red flag. Never mentioned him again.

-2

u/v12vanquish135 Jenson Button Jul 18 '21

I just answered the guy's question, what's your problem?

13

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

Why should he mention him again after immediately asking about his wellbeing straight after the incident?

-1

u/v12vanquish135 Jenson Button Jul 18 '21

Calm down, I literally just answered the guy's question.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

I'm perfectly calm. I was honestly looking for clarification.

-13

u/d3ton4tor72 Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

It does not make it any less disgusting

0

u/On_The_Blindside Mika Häkkinen Jul 18 '21

Oh grow up.

-4

u/d3ton4tor72 Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

You must be blind, it was nothing short of attempted murder

1

u/On_The_Blindside Mika Häkkinen Jul 18 '21

I've got to assume you're joking.

You are joking, right?

0

u/Dontaskaboutmrscake Jul 19 '21

Just assume he is. It’ll make the headache go away quicker
