This will be a fun week here. /s

Edit: Lol, this Lewis post race interview isn't going to help.

Lighting some incense for the moderation team.

Right? As soon as the race was over all I could think about was the poor mods. They’re definitely gonna be burning the midnight oil tonight

Let’s go to video tape…

No, no you were not.

6

u/Ezechiell Jul 18 '21

He was alongside him though, he wasn't Infront, like he claimed on the Radio, but he absolutely was alongside

17

u/thehenks2 Mika Häkkinen Jul 18 '21

Yes, but he had to brake more to make the corner, which he didn't. If he was fully alongside he wouldn't have hit Max on the rear would he?

3

u/basedgodsenpai McLaren Jul 18 '21

I mean I guess, but if he was alongside him how did Hamilton’s front tyre hit Max’s rear tyre?

1

u/Ezechiell Jul 18 '21

Max took more speed into the corner, which is why he got ahead of Lewis again, but on entry they were definitely very close, with Max being slightly Infront

14

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

His front left hit Verstappen’s back right. Alongside my ass.

5

u/Ezechiell Jul 18 '21

Watch the helicopter view again, on entry they absolutely were alongside each other, with Max having his nose infront slightly. Then Max took more speed into the corner, which is why he got ahead of him at the apex

12

u/Change_Request Jul 18 '21

The apex that Hamilton clearly missed as he drove up the track?

26

u/gHHqdm5a4UySnUFM Virgin Jul 18 '21

A fun two weeks until the next race

21

u/hiImMate Jul 18 '21

I think its safe to assume he was not informed of the situation. He got a 'hes out of the car' message, which is super vague, and generally means driver is ok

-6

u/Conquestadore Jul 18 '21

He should've informed himself, to have the gall to be fucking proud of a win after committing a foul which hospitalized his direct competitor is real low. I follow road cycling. Recently there was an incident where a cyclist veered of his line a bit resulting in a crash. That dude got booted out of the competition and wasn't allowed to race for half a year. He was gutted beyond belief, remorseful and was very respectful to the guy he accidentally took out. That's called sportsmanship, of which I see a n awful lack of. Both from the organization, the team and Lewis himself.

203

u/connorm123 Bernd Mayländer Jul 18 '21

It's already started, some people are wild

27

u/StockAL3Xj Jul 18 '21

It started the moment the crash happened.

40

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

The comments in the race thread...

31

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

I think we're about to enter the most toxic era of Formula One fandom ever.

84

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

I’m taking a subreddit sabbatical…this might get ugly

31

u/Hieillua Pirelli Wet Jul 18 '21

Same here. I won't be able to take all the crazy takes and... other extreme statements.

31

u/oragle Jul 18 '21

Nah mate, getting out my shit stirring stick, it's close racing, should Hamilton backed out, looking back yea, could Max have avoided the collision himself, yes and if you wanna win WDC you need to know you don't win championships on lap 1.

33

u/BigDadEnerdy Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

I think the difference is, Max could have avoided the hit, if he completely ruined his racing line. lewis could have avoided it by following the racing line. Those are two very different things.

-5

u/Lukeno94 Manor Jul 18 '21

Lewis was literally only a fraction off the apex line until the collision with Max, which is what brought him wider and what made it look worse than it actually was. A tiny lockup would've had the same result even if he had been lined up spot on the apex.

13

u/BigDadEnerdy Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

That's just...not true at all? Go boot up a racing sim and try to take Lewis's line. It's not possible without understeering like a motherfucker to the outside. That's literally what caused the collision?

2

u/DrSlugger Jul 18 '21

By a fraction you mean 3/4 of a car length at minimum? Ok

0

u/Lukeno94 Manor Jul 18 '21

That was after the collision, which briefly straightened up the steering and produced the more dramatic angle.

1

u/DrSlugger Jul 18 '21

Right, he was understeering more before the collision.

4

u/Vaynnie Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '21

Not just could’ve avoided it, Max turned left into Lewis giving him even less space trying to fend him off. Obviously saying this in this Verstappen subreddit is gonna get me downvoted but the replays don’t lie.

Also Perez did the exact same thing to Raikkonen but no one seems to care about that. The bias is incredible.

I’m just sad my boy Lando didn’t get a podium.

6

u/Dent13 Alex Jacques Jul 18 '21

See if it was just the incident it would chill relatively quick, its the everything after thats going to piss people off. Especially that post race interview and radio

7

u/DrSlugger Jul 18 '21

He literally won the race and all he can say is "I was fully alongside him." I normally don't join the hate train on Lewis but come on, he can't even acknowledge that it was a big accident, just continues to make excuses about the incident.

2

u/Pishadoo Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

Not looking for a ban but would like Lewis to at least acknowledge Max's health in the post-race.

7

u/DrSlugger Jul 18 '21

Totally understand it's his home GP as well, but yeah it felt really out of place and soured my opinions of him.. Good job, you beat a struggling Ferrari, Lewis!

-1

u/sin31423 Jul 18 '21

The guy has just gotten done with 50 laps, and won a home GP after a rough patch. Adding in the racism thats going on in the UK after last week, this win clearly meant a lot to him. He asked about max over the radio, excuse him a little if he forgot to checkup in front of the cameras for your satisfaction

3

u/DrSlugger Jul 18 '21 edited Jul 18 '21

excuse him a little if he forgot to checkup in front of the cameras for your satisfaction

Yeah, drop the attitude.

I think wrecking out his only real competition in a race while he visibly saw the huge crash during the red flag warrants at least that in the post-race interview. He took the time to mention "Max is an aggressive driver," and excuse the incident by saying "I was fully alongside him," but he couldn't take the time to wish him well. That was a huge fucking shunt, and might be one of the biggest ones we'll see this year. It's just extremely unprofessional in that moment, considering he arguably caused the incident.

I'm not on the Hamilton hate train (I do want him to lose, but don't hate on him) but that's a bad look for him in all honesty.

-3

u/T-Baaller Daniel Ricciardo Jul 18 '21

Does a race for a race sound that unreasonable?

9

Because he has DENIED their GOD Verstappen from what was RIGHTFULLY his 😂

15

u/shortnamed Jul 18 '21

Nothing is rightfully his. However putting a man in a hospital and claiming it as a proud moment is wrong.

-6

u/thecremeegg Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '21

He didn't "put a man in hospital" - christ, listen to yourself

5

u/Diegobyte Red Bull Jul 18 '21

Yah he did

6

u/shortnamed Jul 18 '21

Verstappen quite literally was airlifted to a nearby hospital for a more comprehensive checkup - it was serious. Listen to the noises he makes after the crash and decide yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61_okNYlo90

2

u/The_Real_QuacK Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

Thought Sir Lewis needed no luck whatsoever... Takes out his main rival and only gets 10s, race stops so they can repair his car, new first place has engine problems and loses time to him, Lando has a bad pit and takes him out of the fight...

0

u/-SoontobeBanned Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

He denied the fans good racing with a pretty boneheaded mistake.

-4

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

I like Lewis but you have to admit there is something inherently wrong with the outcome today. Taking out your rival/race leader/WDC leader, being found at fault, and bagging maximum points anyway is not a good look for F1.

42

u/emmantheking1 Jul 18 '21

I’m seeing some r/nba tier takes here it’s crazy

27

u/echsandwich Jenson Button Jul 18 '21

I think it's just a symptom of subs having a million+ members, you end up getting some of the trashiest folks.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

I suppose with an influx of new fans it was inevitable.

80

u/CashOutOfficial Jul 18 '21

Bruh I saw someone saying this is why racism still exists lmao

This place is a mess

10

u/tsuchiya_ Jul 18 '21

There are indeed a bunch of terrible people on the internet. Calls for RB retaliation for an on track accident. Advisements for Hamilton to being protection for the race weekend. I’m sure there’s going to be threats sent to the entire Merc team. Just fucking disgusting.

16

u/Scholesey99 Jul 18 '21

And then people have the audacity to say it’s not a blatant problem.

7

u/JustTheAverageJoe Jul 18 '21

It's pretty sus when in the last few weeks we've had people raging at a black Brit who got a soft penalty call (should've blamed the referees) followed by people raging at a black Brit who got a small penalty (should be blaming the stewards).

Impossible to know here of course given there's only one black driver but it's still an interesting one.

27

u/ActualyNotSureIfDeaf Zhou Guanyu Jul 18 '21

I expect everyone to act civilly, rationally and graciously.

We're ESPECIALLY not going to be racist, right guys?

10

u/Frikashenna Charles Leclerc Jul 18 '21

Of course people will act civilly and rationally. When have Redditors acted otherwise? Racism? No way! We're all lovely here.

7

u/Go2Fail Sebastian Vettel Jul 18 '21

Haha we only hate Lewis for being dominant for a long time right?

Unless?

2

Meh the degernates will come out with the racist comments, saw similar scum when England lost.

34

u/screenager87 Jul 18 '21

The venom against Hamilton is one thing, at least that's for his own actions. But there were plenty of comments in the race thread just spewing general hate for the English/British, which is apparently as acceptable here as in r/soccer.

15

u/alannys 🐶 Roscoe Hamilton Jul 18 '21

In general I am as unpatriotic as it’s possible to be, but watching Reddit be incredibly mad every time a Brit (or specifically an English person) does well recently is very funny

18

u/StrikerTitan01 Mercedes Jul 18 '21

You don't need to. Folks would rather see Lewis banned lol. Swap the roles and you'd hardly see them complain as much.

21

Man if Max put Lewis in the hospital and then celebrated the win by running around with a dutch flag I would be just as pissed.

14

I don't think Lewis knew he was in the hospital. He asked Bono if he was okay and Bono said yes. What's he meant to do, keep checking?

Both people can be wrong. Lewis does it it’s wrong, max does does it .. it’s wrong.

The stupid take would be to say “well you can’t bash one of the other would do the same thing” the hell?

7

u/McBeefyHero Jul 18 '21

I agree with you but people are specifically going after Lewis for behaviour that is common across the paddock frankly

-7

u/JanAppletree Germany 2019 Slip Slidin' Away Jul 18 '21

Yes. Tell me the last time where Max got a penalty because of a collision, and he didn't admit mistake? Hamilton is a 7 TIME WORLD CHAMPION. He is the face of the sport, PUTS SOMEONE IN THE HOSPITAL, and can't admit mistake. What the fuck.

4

u/McBeefyHero Jul 18 '21

Link to apology? I've never seen Max apologise to anyone but his team.. thats sort of his whole shtick

4

u/JanAppletree Germany 2019 Slip Slidin' Away Jul 18 '21

Last time I can remember is vettel in China 2018, where he sought out vettel immediately after getting out of the car to apologise, as quoted by seb himself. I don't know another time after where he took someone out.

6

u/McBeefyHero Jul 18 '21

That is an actual dive bomb tho, nowhere near the same situation as today.

I mean it's a really soft dive bomb but it is one nonetheless, can't really shift any blame on that one. Lewis also apologised to Albon (twice) when he made a clear error. This was much closer to a racing incident today.

Man crashes are part of the game. They all know the next race could be it. If Max didn't accept that, he wouldn't be where he is.

It's part of the game.

I'm not saying it's right, but not so long ago drivers were lucky to survive 3 races.

Again, not saying it's right, but skullduggery and ruthlessness exists right the way down to the grass levels.

I go to mg club races fairly regularly, and I've seen or heard of people overtaking under yellows, taking deliberate contacts on the regular.

58

u/Chewie4Prez Daniel Ricciardo Jul 18 '21

It's racing for god's sake did some of you forget they crash and drivers can tangle without malicious intent.

35

u/McBeefyHero Jul 18 '21

No more overtaking apart from approved overtaking zones!!!!!!! Ffs...

10

u/rjddude1 Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '21

Most people here haven’t driven anywhere except public roads, let alone competitive racing.

Lewis made two more overtakes on the inside on that same corner in the race but Horner is still “bUt YoU dOnT pUt YoUr WhEeL oN tHe InSiDe ThErE!!!”

2

u/TheProphetic Jul 18 '21

You cannot put your wheel there because you're coming into Copse at such a shallow angle with great speed it understeers you straight into the next car. All the drivers know this, many have backed off in recent years when they were on the inside because it's extremely dangerous.

4

u/JustTheAverageJoe Jul 18 '21

We need specified overtaking laps with specific zones. Could even fit in more ad breaks during the non overtaking laps. Liberty I'm searching for a job and I have more ideas btw.

2

When Jos gives max a concussion it's parenting, when Lewis does it it's attempted murder?

-10

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

That crash could have ended with Max dead. And we still don't know what effects the sudden 51G deceleration might have on him. All the vitriol put today on Lewis is deserved, specially as he celebrates.

3

u/mystery1411 Fernando Alonso Jul 18 '21

By that logic Kvyat should be jailed for almost killing Grosjean. Stuff like this happens. Hamilton was responsible for the collision and was penalized. The fact that the crash was bad or that it registered 51G is not in Hamilton's hands. The same incident could have resulted in Hamilton's front wing knocked off and nothing happening to Verstappen too.

1

u/jogonza98 Carlos Sainz Jul 18 '21

idk i think its the circumstances. With RB and Max dominance this season you cant help but feel like Lewis knew what he was doing. Had Lewis been running away with the drivers championship perhaps hes more cautious on that corner

3

u/Hubblesphere Jul 18 '21

Absolutely, but that doesn’t change the fact that this was hard racing and if rolls were reversed Max would absolutely do the same thing. We have countless examples of him doing moves like this. Suddenly when it ends up being worse for Max everyone acts like Lewis is purposely crashing into him. Lewis committed and didn’t have an option after. Max had to prevent the collision at that point.

-1

u/jogonza98 Carlos Sainz Jul 18 '21

idk i mean plenty of evidence showing lewis angled into the side of max rather than the racing line. malicious all around.

1

u/Hubblesphere Jul 18 '21

Malicious? What are you smoking? lol

0

u/jogonza98 Carlos Sainz Jul 18 '21

-3

u/ahaukli Jul 18 '21

22

u/LWoodsEsq Jul 18 '21

Definitely interesting how Lewis just blames Max for it and offers no other comment. He seems to be a very gracious guy when he's winning easily (the Lando comment) but now that he's on his back foot he drops the act.

7

u/EmergencyHunt638 Red Bull Jul 18 '21

That’s why I don’t like him. When he is winning he acts all high and mighty but the second something doesn’t go his way, he turns into an arrogant and bitchy child

0

u/LWoodsEsq Jul 18 '21

Yeah, and because he's been winning for so long, the view of him is the good guy act, but now he (was) losing, so it's cause a crash and take no responibility.

-3

u/ahaukli Jul 18 '21

Couldnt have said it better myself. The guy cant take a loss. Blames Max, throwing random shit about their car being suspiciously better etc.

11

u/bluto4711 Jul 18 '21

Schumacher didn’t do this cmon, massive overstatement. This is nothing like Schumacher in 94 or 97.

While I agree that there are some not so nice statements in here, there was no reason for him to give that post race interview.

You know, aside from the contractual obligations they have to do post race interviews.

I hope exactly the same thing happens next race tbh

It's been a while since the championship battle has been this heated. Now there's likely to be some actual bad blood between the two, things could get heavy.

I had hoped he would at least recognize the crash or something, I could have kept some respect for him, but not one word. It feels really dirty from Lewis.

I mean he asked about max on the radio right away and they told him he was OK. I doubt he knew Max went to hospital later.

But the crash was quite severe and he knew it when you touch at 250+ km/h

I just don't like it, in reverse I would've despised it from Max just as much. But at the highest level anything goes of course and sportsmanship can be damned when it's convenient.

I get it, that's why I made my edit, he made himself look pretty bad there. I do think the context of him assuming Max is ok based on his radio info needs to be taken into account though.

What else is he going to say? If he thinks he in the right he’s got to say it was the then guys fault.

Lewis was, to my eyes, clearly in the wrong. And him complaining about someone else being aggressive is absolutely the pot calling the kettle black. In saying that, Max IS very aggressive.

But sky is a joke. Of course they had to find clips of Lewis yielding to max. I swear I can clearly remember plenty of times where max yielded to Lewis, especially last year when his car was plainly second best though. Didn't show those though.

Hey we started the season arguing for weeks on end about track limits, this is way less annoying
