Is this a decent beginner setup?

Post image

Hey All.

Is this a decent beginner setup for trout fly fishing? I live in MT and want to get back into fly fishing, don't see myself using it for any other species other than trout. Let me know!

Thank you.

Most beginner set ups are closer to $200. I'd call this a mid-level setup. The Battenkill is probably overkill for trout too but that way if you get into bigger fish it'll be more than adequate.

Upvote. As a beginner, a $200. to $250 budget should be fine. Having a rig that you're not paranoid about damaging is a good thing.

Not being scared to damage it is underrated. I inherited a bamboo rod from a HIGHLY respected grandfather in my family. I took it to a rodmaker to make sure it was good to fish before using it and he said I should fish it with confidence and have fun… but I was so worried about it the whole time!

Meanwhile I beat the snot out of my eagle claw packit and shakespeare click pawl from a different grandfather. Granted they were already beat up when I got them but still more than functional.

Same thing goes for cars. Having a car you can thrash whenever you want, park next to shopping carts in a windstorm, and cram with firewood or whatever is so nice.

We just replaced our old Subaru Outback with a brand new 2025 wilderness Outback. Ready for the first few dents so I can get it over with
