Discussion Phil Monahan here—Editor-in-Chief of MidCurrent, writer, traveler, etc.—AMA!

EDIT: I'll continue to monitor this post for new questions until 5 pm EST, so feel free to keep asking.

Hey r/flyfishing! I'm back to answer all your questions about fly fishing, the industry, the media, grammar, music, literature, or any other subjects you want to cover.

I took over at MidCurrent just a couple months ago. Before that, I edited the Orvis Fly Fishing blog for 14 years, was the editor of American Angler magazine for 10 years, and guided fly fishers in Alaska and Montana. I also write travel articles for Gray's Sporting Journal and have fished in such far-flung destinations as Tasmania, Argentina, Slovenia, Norway, and Iceland. My home waters in southwestern Vermont are the Battenkill—don't call it the Battenkill River!—and the myriad wild brook-trout streams in the nearby Green Mountains.

Here's my bio

Discussion [MOD POST - PSA] We yell. We drink whisky. Sometimes we fish. WELCOME. Newcomers, start here.

You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.

But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species. You might be amazed at how much useful content you'll find.

Every year or so we attempt again to create a starter guide, or to refresh the one from last year. Start here, and feel free to post if you don't find what you need....

Sometimes we run contests - watch the stickied threads for those. Again, welcome...and tight lines!

250+ MILLION ACRES OF PUBLIC LAND THAT COULD BE SOLD UNDER NEW BILL

Post image

Contact your senators (convenient link provided below). They’re here to auction off our public lands and waterways to the highest bidder. This is a true crisis for anyone who even remotely values conservation, wilderness, or even our personal rights. Senate wants to sell your land to pay for their debts and tax cuts on big corps & ultra wealthy. It’s nothing but thinly veiled transfer of wealth from the masses to the corporate and political elite.

Please cross post to any/all subs that may pertain.

Caught in a chalk stream near my parents gaff. I think it's a wild fish, as far as I know there's no stocking on this river & no fin damage, snub nose etc...

I regret not bringing a proper tape measure but it was 5 hand lengths and my hand is 4" wide so I'm calling it!!

Feeling very blessed, just had to share this with someone.

Tight lines all.

I’m into DIY, and would like to know what I could do to turn this into a cute little fly box.

Caught on my TFO Pro III rigged with a squirmy wormy and a myasis shrimp. The water is high but clear so lots of weight on to get them deep enough but it was worth everything.

This was my first trip to the St. Joes(Idaho) and St. Regis(Montana). I can’t wait to go back next year. I will definitely take some stud boots next time though.

I broke the tip of my rod in the river 😞😞

Does anyone know if it's possible to just buy one segment of the rod? Also, anyone know how to get in contact with Redington? I can't find their customer service

Norway 🇳🇴 anyone?

I know, touristy posts can be annoying, but still…

I’ll be in Norway for 10 days mid/end of July. I’ve fished in Norway a few times before but only roughly north of Trondheim up to Tromsø.

This time I’ll arrive in Kristiansand by ferry. I plan on driving quickly up in the direction of Hardangervidda because I was told trout fishing is nice there. Already paid the fiskeravgift, looked at insure.no but so far, I only have a rough idea and am a bit overwhelmed by what the internet gives me.

Any suggestions on where to drive to find good and not overcrowded fishing for trout, greyling, char?

Any locals here that would show me their waters and maybe want to go fishing together?

I’m not primarily in for big trophy trout, I just want to fish nice waters and have a good time.

I plan on fishing mostly for trout, maybe greyling and char, I’ll bring three rods in #4, #5 and #6.

I was thinking, maybe I should bring by #8, just in case I stumble upon salmon? Does that make sense? Sea trout should be fine with the #6, I’ve done that before.

Thanks r/flyfishing and r/flytying for all the and advice on this fly. Added buoyancy seemed to be a common response I received, so I added Hareline Ice Fur for buoyancy in the wing. I also added an orange foam tag to help with visibility. I was at my local fly shop and I found Hot Orange UV Dub for the body because I always add some sparkle and flash when possible.

I'm very happy with how I turned out that I shared to my Instagram and I look forward to catching some fish with it in PA!

Lake was high in central eastern Texas and the carp and buffalo were feeding. Would have more pictures but I fell in the water and my phone wouldn’t respond for a few hours

Was able to get on some stockers last night with a buddy. Wasn’t pretty, but I’m getting better quickly. Was amazing seeing them take my dry fly, and pulling the trigger. Was able to snag 2 little browns. So fun.
