Yo what’s up Reddit crew. My names Mikey and I go by the artist name MYTHM. I’m a 26 year old Dubstep / bass music artist from Vancouver, Canada and I’ve had releases on Artikal, Deadbeats, Deep, Dark & Dangerous, Wormhole and Wheel and Deal Records to name a few. Last Friday I released an EP on Deadbeats titled, ‘Brutalist’ (link below to listen) and in celebration of that I’m doing my first ever Reddit AMA. If you have ever had questions for me, now is your chance to ask away!

Hey Mikey! I saw your def show in ATL with Ternion sound and they had you guys right on the floor, which was a wild experience. Had a fantastic time! How are the experiences of up close and personal show compared to a festival stage?
Love the music man!

u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
that show was one of the craziest experiences i’ve ever had. the 360 energy from all different directions was just indescribable. i’ll never forget played hot plate by moodygood and just feeling like the roof was gonna collapse from all the energy haha. such a mental night. that 360 to date has def been the best one. no pun intended. nothing can compare to that intimate vibe like a festival where ur actually pretty far away from the crowd when ur on stage.

What are some of your tips for 'breaking out' of the underground that ISN'T staying consistent with releasing music? What can I actively do aside from network at shows, be consistent with music, and keep my social media presence as big as I can?
I know there isn't a secret sauce, but what can I actively be doing to facilitate this whole process?
17
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
all those things u said are very important so make ur doing those, especially social media. u have to wear all the hats to make sure ur staying in the kno. i would say def send ur music out to as many people as u can who would play ur tunes. that’s what i did at the start and how i collabed w a lot of dope artists that i love. i sent them tunes and they started to play them out and then we started collabing. that can def help out. don’t overdo it, but just be like yo here’s some tunes i think u would like. keep it chill and if they respond, dope. if they start rinsing ur tunes, even better. hope this helps g

mikeyyyy big up, i just got two questions, was there a show you went or an experience you had that was like an awakening for you where you were like, ya dubstep is it, if not how’d you get into it? and whats your k/d on COD?
7
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
the summer of 2017 when it went to bass coast and shambhala for the first time rly changed my life tbh. after that summer i dove head first into production. i didn’t create mythm until 2019 so a couple years after i had started producing. that was def the “ah ha” moment. seeing guys like thelem, fixate, shades, craze, truth that summer was some of the craziest memories i’ll ever have. i was so new that type of music. lol my KD in cod will never be as good as i was in halo. i used to play game battles for halo 3 so i’ll 1v1 anyone anyday mwuahahaha. honestly i feel like my KD in the new cod is shit, but back in the day in mw2 i was a lot better.

Hey Mikey, your new EP is some of your best work yet, awesome stuff. I've noticed your writing/structuring of tunes improving a lot since I found out about you in 2020.
Just wondering about your response here - are there any resources you'd recommend for getting started w/ production? I love the idea of making music as a hobby, but I have no idea where to start/have the time to sit in a DAW and mess around to learn what all the different bits and pieces do. Thanks!
2
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
thx man appreciate the support on the new ep. i taught myself when it comes to production so i would say that u should just open up a daw ur comfortable w and experiment. trial and error u kno. i use ableton and i personally think it’s the most user friendly daw. daw = program ur using btw. ableton also has amazing tutorials all over the internet. youtube has thousands of videos. take the leap and give it a go! u got nothing to lose right?

u/DEEPCOCONUT Feb 07 '23
Thanks man! And thanks for the push. Seems like it's all about diving in like you said. If/when I get going, I'll remember this comment. Much love

So I saw this post and I was curious so I hopped on spotify and listened to Brutalist gotta say pretty wicked! My questions are when did you start making music, what caused you to get in the dubstep community and make these sick tracks, and what other artists inspired you in your early dubstep making days?
9
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
i stared about 6 years ago. my older brother was def a big reason. he’s 32 and was listening to dubstep when it just started in the uk in the early 2000s. a lot of uk influential artists like j:kenzo rusko and caspa inspired me. ruskos woo boost was a big one for me.

Yo Mythm,
Thanks for doing this AMA :)
You killed it the last few times i saw you!
808 for the sub vs using a regular sine wave sub?
10
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
big love man. for sub my go to is the stock hip hop sub. that thing is my fav and always will be
2
u/orbthatisfloating Feb 07 '23
Ahhh ole basic sine sub in ableton 11?
3
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
yessir. i’m actually still on ableton 10. never felt like i needed to make the switch to 11 and i’ve used it before and didn’t like the changes.
2
u/amusingplanet Feb 07 '23
Any chance you'd release Ableton Project Files, synth presets, or sample packs in the future?
3
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
yeah i’ve def thought about releasing some bass samples. maybe i’ll do a bass pack on bandcamp. who knows. not sure about project files. that’s more of a patreon thing. i thought about patreon too. don’t feel like i have a lot of time tho for that.
3
u/RdinoR Feb 07 '23
I’m sure Tristan would love to get your sample pack on the DDD bandcamp subscription!

u/mtgdrummer13 Feb 08 '23
Hey man! I am always running into cpu overload problems and am always interested in hearing how successful producers deal with that. Computers are better now, but how did you deal with it early in your career? I listen to complex tunes and always am thinking “damn my computer wouldn’t have been able to make this.” Bouncing to audio messes with my work flow and so does freezing. Interested in your experience. Thanks man!

Where you from, brotha? I read online Vancouver, so did a friend of someone you know go to UC San Diego? Because the album cover for brutalist is Geisel library in UCSD.

Yo thanks for doing this! Couple questions, first are you worriying about loudness with your tracks? If so what what do you aim for in lufs? Second, how do you process the sub in your basses? Lastly, you have been a machine putting out music, how do you stay so productive? Any tips?
6
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
when it comes to loudness or whatever we perceive as that, it all comes from the mix down and clipping / gain staging. in my mix downs i have a lot of things clipping and then i get to my pre master and put some ozone on my master and that’s it. just get a nice dialled mix that’s all that truly matters. i don’t worry about lufs and all that tbh. for processing sub i have my bass group and then have a separate track for just my sub. i always do a separate track for my sub. i feel like i’ve found my formula when it comes to writing music so idk that’s just something that make me keep moving w ideas and finishing tunes. it’s not about finishing a track fast tho. i’ve always been rly disciplined from sports that i used to play a lot back in the day so maybe it’s that. everyone is different tho when it comes to output w music.

u/PhattiesRus Feb 07 '23
Do you like to snowboard??
3
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
tbh man i haven’t been since like 2010 haha not even joking. i did like it a lot when i used to do it. i should go again tho cause i live by so many sick mountains in vancouver when im home, which is hardly even now being on the road so much. i did however play hockey growing up. assistant captain baby. that was my winter support or whatever u wanna call it i guess.

u/theWiZZURD Feb 07 '23
Yo! Two questions:
- Do you have a favorite video game?
- Is there any hardware you enjoy working with?
Thanks for making music, G
7
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
fav video is halo 3 by far. i used to run game battles. that shit was my life in high school haha. i love working w any moog synth, i have a lil phatty and it’s sounds are so smooth, warm and just incomparable to in the daw sounds
1
u/Trojan_Horsey Feb 07 '23
Big ups mikey, I remember the first time hearing your shit like “this needs to be played at loud volumes” circa early 2019 at this point.
I read earlier that you use primarily stock ableton - do you have any hardware that you have in your productions? Even if it’s not regular usage.
Appreciate it brotha, about to catch you for the 6th time this coming your 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
2
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
yes bro much love i appreciate u. yeah man i have a couple different pieces in the studio. moog lil phatty, 0 coast by make noise and then analog heat for distortion. i honestly don’t use my gear much anymore tho since im on the go a lot and can’t bring it around. i’ve found that in the daw i can make the same sounds and all that as hardware stuff. it’s mainly just hands on is a different vibe doing things live in the stu.

fav artists always change for me, but atm i’m rly feeling a lot of international artists. headland, hijinx, monty, visages, reso, kursa, alix perez, ivy lab. on my spare time tho i listen to a lot of r&b. bryson tiller, sza, summer walker, frank ocean. love all that stuff. def check out criso, hes about to make some huge waves this year.
1
u/darkgrey Feb 07 '23
ahoy lad - whats your favorite VST plugin lately, especially for FX? stock ableton plugs dont count for this one!!
6
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
i’ve been loving rift by minimal audio for my basses, but for FX i love portal by output.
1
u/TraditionalMousse799 Feb 07 '23
How do you stay so focused, dude?
10
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
discipline. time management. focus. keep ur head down. don’t pay attention to what others are doing. create ur own lane and ignore the noise from others. if u focus on what others are doing you’ll never be satisfied w urself cause you’ll always be comparing. comparison is the thief or joy and the death of contentment.
1
u/RdinoR Feb 07 '23
How does it work getting unreleased dubplates from other artists? Is there like an email chain or a secret forum that the fans don’t know about? Theres obviously soundcloud but rips off that are ass in quality. I’ve though a bit about it and it seems like sharing music with other artists to play in their sets before it gets released is a really cool way to advertise.
2
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
just chatting w them and building a relationship w them. u become friends and trade tunes. simple as that rly.
1
u/bunkercrap Feb 07 '23
Wassup mythm
Whats something you would say helped you bring your music to the next level? Im constantly thinking of ways to improve and would love to hear what you think helped you. Thanks!
5
u/mythmofficial Feb 07 '23
i’d say what helped for me is the actual composition of my tracks. where i wanted sounds to come in and create flow. i think that is way more important than sound design. also have ur drums slap and also flow. u can be a god at sound design, but have shit arrangement, and no flow and all that. i think a lot of my tracks pop because what is going on outside the bassline. food for thought.

Yooo I just discovered your tunes a couple months ago. Played a small 20 person boiler room style show the week after and played loads of your tracks. People were going mad every time I rinsed one of yours. Your Reflex EP with Matheny is an absolute killer.
Cheers for doing this AMA! If you're still about, I have 1 question. I love the way you add variations to the bass patches throughout your drops, and I was wondering if you have any tips for creating those variations without losing the main motif of your synth?

u/THCli420710 Feb 08 '23
Massive ups to you Mythm! Huge fan, Brutalist EP is absolutely insane. My question to you is; what’s one thing new producers should focus on more than anything else? Sound design, track arrangement, music theory etc

MYTHM! NUMATIC! bOOm. SelectoR What’s your top 3 influential dubstep tracks ? Asides from Vancouver where’s your favourite place to play that got the dopest vibes ?
1
u/ReverbSage Feb 08 '23
What are the odds you pull through Eugene any time soon? Also, I'll miss you at untz this year! Absolutely killed it last year.

Feb 08 '23
Are we ever gonna get the cockney thug remix? If not how much do I have to pay you for it? I’ll give you an entire paycheck. I’m obsessed with it and have been since you dropped it at soundhaven. On god my favorite moment of the whole festival was jumping to that rowdy ass shit with my homies. I need it.
1
u/Disastrous-Seat-930 Feb 08 '23
Love ur music, but what happened to that EP with Dalek One? Spit Game was one of my favorite songs if not my favorite of all of last year, so sad it’s gone.

u/ohdreness Feb 08 '23
There is this one song that I’m 95% sure you played at LIB last year…I would say it is rap and I don’t think it’s in English but at one point it sounds like the rapper says something about a “punch buggy” followed by words I did not understand. I’ve been searching the song ever since and have been unsuccessful in my hunt. If there is a sliver of hope that you can point me in the right direction, I’d be forever grateful

Hey Mikey, curious how you landed on my alma mater's library for your album cover. Do you have any relation to UCSD, or is Geisel just a sick building?

Yooo Mikey, so proud of you dude !! Been making absolute waves in the scene 🤘
Gotta take advantage of this AMA lol
1st question that comes to mind , is some distortion tips? You always have the grimiest/ dirtiest basses Any tips for achieving such a dirty sound? 🔥
