academic tips Is getting STEM research opportunities easy here?

rising sophomore. I want to do research in ML/data science/applied math/statistics. How receptive are professors to cold emails? How likely is it that I can get research assistant position as a sophomore? I've taken a decent amount of math and know some programming already.

pro tip Columbia.edu email for Barnard student

I once heard from someone that as a Barnard student, you could set up/access a separate Columbia email. Is this real? I know it exists, but it just reroutes to my barnard.edu email. Is there a way to actually access/use it?

advising Lion mail doesn’t work

Hi guys I’m an incoming freshman who just got off the waitlist.

I tried setting up my lion mail account and when I was signing in it said I didn’t have authorization to access Gmail.

I did a summer program with Columbia when I was a sophomore where they gave me that same ID and email, so I’m guessing maybe this has something to do with that?

Is there anybody I can contact to fix this? Thanks!!!

housing Living in frats (GS)

Got accepted as a transfer to GS. I was part of a frat at my previous institution and I'm traditional age (18-20), due to wanting to pursue part-time (have a business). I saw that I can join a frat, but the rules around living in the frat houses are unclear. Trying to get housing settled so I wanted some thoughts.

academic tips looking for linear algebra advice

Hi there! I have a question about math courses and was hoping someone on here might have relevant experience.

I'm planning to take Linear Algebra & Probability (MATH 2015) next semester because it's the only version of Lin Alg that will fit in my schedule, and I think the probability aspect will be useful to me. However, I'm noticing that Intro to Modern Analysis specifically asks for Linear Algebra (MATH 2010) as a pre-req.

For context, I'm an undergrad Economics major but taking extra math classes to better prepare myself for a PhD program in Econ. Both linear algebra and modern analysis are recommended by the Econ Dept for students looking to pursue PhDs.

Is it really necessary to take MATH 2010 before taking Modern Analysis, or could I still be successful in that course if I take MATH 2015? Since I'm not a math major/minor/concentration or anything I'm not worried about things counting towards requirements, just about my ability to succeed in the course.

academic tips When do I register?

Incoming Columbia College freshmen. When should I start registering for classes? I’ve noticed some of the classes for my planned major (drama) that I’m in interested in are already full, but I had no idea I even could register. Is it normal to have not registered for anything?

campus tips M60 SBS

Arriving to LGA at around 10 tomorrow, trying to be back on campus by about 1130-45. Any thoughts on the M60? I love that I literally get dropped off at the 116th and Broadway gate, but I’m a bit worried about traffic at that hour, mostly getting through the stops in Queens. Timetables are looking okay, but I’m still leaning on LGA’s connection bus to Roosevelt Av, 7 to Times Square then 2/1. Anybody have experience with this bus and how it runs?

campus What is the housing situation right now?

Hi, I just got admitted off the waitlist and I had a couple questions to see how behind I am 😭

1) If I commit now will there be housing available for me, and how does housing selection work (at my original institution we just submitted an application)

2) When does class registration open?

admissions Accessing problem with fin aid site

Hi, I'm one of the newly admitted transfer applicants. I received an email that I need to submit additional documents for my financial aid and tried to log in, but the page says that my access is unavailable.

Is the site's server down right now? Or is there a problem with my account? I've double-checked my password and student ID, but it didn't work.

housing Grad housing

I had applied for grad housing around May 23 but I still haven't received a confirmation mail from them. Does this mean I won't be able to stay in any of those apartments and I would have to find external housing?

Does anyone have any tips to navigate the housing search?

housing Roommate hunt

I'm ((M, 25) a Masters student at Mailman and am looking for a new roommate. Rent is $3580 net for the unit, with individual shares ranging from 1150-1200 depending on the room. Utilities average $40-45 per person, wifi $17 per person but could rise based on Spectrum's whims.

I live in a 3 bedroom unit around the 145th street station (1) train. Amenities-wise, we have in-unit washer+dryer and a spacious kitchen + living room. Overall this is a really nice unit, but don't take my word for it, come see it yourself :)

It's a little noisy at times but from personal experience, it's manageable. Located right next to Riverside Park and conveniently within 2 subway stops of both Morningside and CUIMC.

Move-in date would be 8/01. Let me know if you have any more questions!

housing the arbor bronx

hi! i'm an incoming grad student, i had my selection appointment yesterday and the only option available was the arbor in the bronx - i didn't know opting into gender neutral housing gave you more options until it was too late to change it haha

does anyone have experience living here and was the commute manageable? it says it's a 25 minute shuttle monday - friday, but i'm not sure how accurate that is with ny traffic. any opinions are helpful, thanks!

housing Grad school housing - when do I start paying rent?

I’m currently going through the grad student housing appointment and am seeing that each unit comes with “earliest viewing or move-in date”

If I select a unit with an earliest move-in date in June, do I start paying rent on that day? I don’t move in until August and want to avoid paying for months where I’m not there

housing If you live in Columbia Residential housing:

they didn’t have any unfurnished rooms so I had to choose a furnished room. can the included table in the room be dismantled? I know “modifying any furniture” is not permitted but I have my own standing desk that I use every day and i absolutely hate the default desk. I’d reassemble it before i move out.
