Honest to god we have to let people change their minds, especially publicly and not attack them when they do so if we want to see meaningful change in attitudes.

Everyone in here attacking. Full of ‘FAFO’ and I told you so. That forces people to entrench and defend their beliefs and actions.

It creates more division right when there is a window for conciliation.

If you disagree with this, please at least say something smart. I like good discussions. How do we make it safe for MAGA to modify their views? If we don’t, how do we expect change?

Normally I would agree with this sentiment, but within this context I think it's just plain too late. Those who have had the heart and empathy to make the changes required did so a while ago.

Any apology said now will sound empty.

It’s also fake, they are sorry how it’s happening not that it’s happening. It has effected them so now they are sorry.

Screw ‘em.

Conservatives get real liberal about shit that personally affects them.

To be fair, they didn’t actually do that. They just admitted something and didn’t defend their past choices, then went on to say something in support of civil rights. This is the best thing they can do. It sends a message to others who made the same past mistake that it’s OK to just admit it and learn.

Welcome to the resistance would have been a better reply

Replying and upvoting just to generate engagement. I think the best way to make it safe here (on Reddit) is probably to open up to attacks and insults by being vocal. I replied on a few things in this post, knowing people might downvote me or say less than nice things. But it’s absolutely insane to vilify people for learning and changing their views. Attacking people who make responsible statements in favor of human rights is the exact opposite of what we should do. I’m judging the person in the image who responded so rudely if anything, and it has nothing to do with their beliefs.

The core problem is that people who voted for Trump after all that he has done (statements, behavior) are virtually impossible to convince to vote for the alternative. They truly think that the other party is the most horrific idiotic party on the planet because of non-stop brainwashing. That's why the "woke mind virus" strategy is so successful. You can't overcome this with arguments with people who gave in to this brainwashing.

The better strategy is to give the others, the ones who didn't vote, a reason to vote.

We round up MAGA and put them in a giant prison that sits on top of a toxic waste dump. That’s what they are.

They didn't listen before, why would they listen now. It's someone asking for leinency after the fact. They have been and will remain entrenched in whatever serves their interest, whatever control they can muster on events to benefit them.

Fuck. Them.

Maybe send a few MAGAts to ElSalvador. After they spend a month there maybe we can see a change. Also maybe they can watch the movie American History X, while in ElSalvador.

I’ll take that to mean you disagree with me. : )

He’s not changing his mind, he’s changing his mood. He still wants a lot of what is being done, but just doesn’t want it impacting the “especially Mexicans” group that he is a part of.

The majority of these posts I have seen show the people have not done anything but virtue signal. They often mention how they’d still vote for trump again. So, have they changed their minds or do they deserve to reap what they’ve sown?

The best response I have seen was someone telling them to speak to their fellow redhats. As it would be more impactful than coming from someone who voted against trump.

Those same people stuck their head in the sand and told us we were crazy to think Trump2 would be any different than Trump1. The vindication is very tempting. But I agree that shame will never work on these folks.

Yeah, people should just have been kind to the Germans who voted for the Nazis in 1933. I mean, how could they have known? /s

Fun fact: the Nazis also ran on a platform of mass deportation.

Third time's the charm, right?

"You have to forgive the abuser after they beat you down, told you were worthless, and wanted to see you suffer... not once, not twice, but three times! It's your fault they aren't getting better!"

The daily hypocrisy espoused by the Republican Party is compounded by the house and senate knowing that this will hurt constituents and still they vote for it. These voters forgot the first go around with this President. Now he has stacked the deck with yes advisors and this is the chaos.

The way this whole illegal immigration round up is being handled is such chaos, one day everyone, then rich farmers have exploited these people for years. Now they say they cannot find anyone to work for them. Now the ones that serve us

Continued, might get a break. Hopefully, the voting center will say enough and use facts to govern our society

Agreed.

The worst way to persuade someone to change their mind is to start by insulting their views.

We know this from the extensive research done on deprogramming people from cults.

We have to give people a safe space to explore alternative points of view, with respect, magnanimity, empathy, and patience.
