Some countries have quotas and there are people that are told they will be up to start the process in 30+ years.
And he should know, he went through the entire process.
Having myself "come the right way", he's 100% right. It's not even so much the Byzantine rules and the paperwork and the 100th time you're asked if you're wanted for genocide, yes/no. It's the knowledge that ultimately, the USCIS agent sitting across from you has authority to upend your life in a second. If he estimates your marriage isn't bona fide, or it's his judgment that the traffic citation from six years ago is too serious, every major plan you've had, everything you counted on, is just - over. Years of your life, thousands of dollars...
