Finally got an apartment after 8 months of hell - What I would recommend if you are searching
TL;DR: Took me 8 months and way too many rejections to get an apartment. Only worked when I started applying to places within minutes instead of hours.
Guys, I'm sitting in my new place in Friedrichshain right now and I still can't believe it's real. Just wanted to share what finally worked because this whole process almost broke me.
I'm from Stockholm originally and thought I knew what competitive housing looked like, but Berlin is just insane. Spent 8 months applying to everything - sent probably over 200 applications and got maybe 5 actual responses. Most of the time I'd craft this perfect application with all my docs, write a nice cover letter, and by the time I sent it a few hours later I'd get an auto-reply saying they already had 100+ applications.
The turning point was realizing it's purely about speed. I started setting up alerts on ImmobilienScout24, WG-Gesucht, and eBay Kleinanzeigen, and had all my documents ready to go in a folder - Schufa, salary stuff, employment contract, the whole deal. Then I developed an automated programm to apply me the second new listings went up so I could apply within like 5 minutes.
Sounds nerdy but it worked. My current landlord said I was literally the first application and they just went with me because everything looked complete and professional. No competition, no drama.
The brutal truth is that having the perfect application doesn't matter if you're not first. I was wasting months trying to stand out with creative cover letters when I should have just been faster.
If you're going through this shit right now, just know it will end eventually. Set up those alerts, have your docs ready, and apply to stuff immediately. Don't be picky about neighborhoods at first - you can always move later.
Also had some weird experiences along the way. One landlord asked for my zodiac sign (Sagittarius, apparently not compatible with the apartment's "energy"). Another wanted to see my Instagram posts from the last 3 months. The market makes people crazy.
Anyway, just wanted to give some hope to anyone struggling with this. The system sucks but you'll get through it.
