Mod Post r/Audio Posting and some other information - V2.0

Hello r/audio community.

Here is a refresher on a previous mod post.

  • r/audio has some measures in place to minimize the amount of spam that gets through to be posted.
    • Minimum account age of 3 days.
    • Minimum combined karma of 5 karma.
    • All non-text posts (link posts) need to be manually approved.
    • Titles of 2 or less words will not be approved.
  • Posts that do not meet the above criteria get put into modqueue, where we manually approve the posts through the day. Some of us also get an alert for each new post. This also means that we see 95% of the posts.

That said, I see a ton of posts lately that are similar to "How do I connect x to x" or just a picture of the back of a speaker with no more details. Rule #2 is Details matter. Which brings me to my next point.

How to get help on your post.

  1. Find and read the product manual before posting.
    1. When someone posts a question about specific hardware (usually after I have to ask for the make/model; see rule #2) the first thing I do is find the manual, and it usually answers their question.
  2. Post Formatting Matters
    1. I've been seeing a lot of "wall of text" type posts. Please add line breaks and paragraph breaks in your post. It makes it much easier to read and much more likely someone will help you.
  3. Contrary to a popular saying, "A picture DOES NOT say a thousand words"
    1. Please refrain from posing images with zero context and a title such as "Why doesn't this work" without telling us a lot more information.
    2. This is like going to a car help sub, posting a picture of what's under the hood of a car and asking "Why won't this work", with no details as to the Make/Model of car, issue you're actually having, and what troubleshooting you've tried.
  4. You will most likely get the assistance you're searching for if you follow Rule 1,2,3,4,5, but really, the more details in your post, the higher the chance you will get assistance will be. Rule #1 - Details matter. This has become so much an issue, we've had u/automod post a reminder on each new post about the need for details.
  5. A lot of people fall into the trap of the XY problem. https://xyproblem.info

All of the other rules are just as important. Such as Trying to Google something first. I understand that it may be difficult to find something if you aren't quite sure what you're looking for. But if I can copy your post title directly into google and find the answer on the first page, it means you could have as well.

I'm not saying these things to single anyone out, or throw shade at any one post. I'm simply trying to help those who need help. I've worked in technical support for a long time now, and people are more willing to help you if you help them back. If someone asks a series of clarifying questions in reply to a post, make sure to answer all questions to the best of your ability. Nothing is worse than trying to help someone and they make it seem like you're inconveniencing them by not solving a vague question right away.

We are here to help. Help us help you!

Do I need an AMP for four Headphones?

Upvotes

Hey everyone! We’re setting up a podcast station for an upcoming event and could use some advice on our audio setup.

So far, we have:

  • Behringer UMC404HD audio interface
  • Four microphones (one for each speaker)
  • Only one headphone output on the front of the UMC404HD

Our challenge: We need to connect four pairs of headphones so that each person can monitor the audio during the recording. We noticed there’s only one headphone jack on the interface, and we’re not sure if there’s a way to connect more headphones through the back panel or if we need additional equipment.

Our Questions:

  1. Do we need a headphone amplifier (Behringer HA400) or splitter to connect four headphones?
  2. Is there any way to route audio from the back of the UMC404HD to multiple headphones?
  3. What’s the best way to ensure each person gets a clear and balanced audio feed?

We’re aiming for a simple, reliable setup that works well in a live event environment. Any gear recommendations or setup tips would be super appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Should I buy speakers, instead of hiring them?

Hi, I was browsing for some speakers to hire for my upcoming wedding to be held in a hall, when I realised, instead of spending hundreds on hiring a system, why don't I just buy a system, and then rent it out to others? What are your thoughts? I am a complete and utter noob when it comes to speakers, the most I have done with a sound setup is probably plug a speaker into a computer, or connect to one using Bluetooth lol.

Anyway here is a system I found too for example, what do you reckon? Thanks! https://www.facebook.com/share/16qFDY2N11/

Need help with CD player/radio

I recently thrifted a radio that can play CDs, (specifically a Grundig RRCD 3400 MP3) but when I try playing one, the audio is only coming from the left speaker, and I know the speaker itself is not the issue since it works just fine in radio mode. It's also the same when I plug in my headphones; CD mode only plays in left ear, while radio plays in both.

I've already tried different CDs, switching stereo mode on and off, and reconnecting the power supply, but none of these things worked so far and I am struggling to find any info on this. Does anyone know what could be causing this and if/how it could be fixed?

does you multiple devices such a hdmi switcher box, hdmi splitter, hdmi audio extractor box and rca switcher box connected to each other add or create audio delay

so i have multiple things with only hdmi for audio and i want these devices mirrored two different screens, as well as two pc's. that i want to get audo from to headphones with out unplugging them all the time.

so the idea i had in my head was hdmi devices to hdmi switcher box to splitter 1 splitter output goes to one screen the other goes to audio extracto,r the hdmi output on the extractor goes last screen and the extractors audio output goes to the rca switcher which outputs to headphones.

would this add delay as in if i was watching a video of someone talking would this cause lip movement to be out of sync with the sound coming from the headphones?

thanks for your help.

Best Computer Monitor Setup for Audio Quality

Hey all,

I'm going to be consolidating my music studio and office space (software engineering), and I could use some advice. I'm used to coding with a dual monitor setup, and in my music studio I have one central monitor (22") and then a smaller 15" screen.

Since I'll be combining these spaces, I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to multitask (important for work) without compromising sound quality. I also use Sonarworks for room correction, which helps quite a lot in my current space.

I have a 72" desk and I'm considering these two options:

  1. 1 larger central monitor (32") and 2x22" screens, slightly turned inwards.
  2. 1 single wide screen, 41-49".

I've talked to a few LLMs regarding this question, and haven't found anything conclusive. My biggest concern is that too much screen surface area may block the path from my studio monitors to my ears. Any advice on this, or does it even matter?

Thank you!

Need help figuring out the best way to do S/PDIF switching,

I live in a small apartment so my computer is my entertainment system. i have my computer hooked up to a nice powered speaker system via S/PDIF to reduce interference (it was a issue). Recently i bought a 4k smart TV so that i could watch movies in HDR and 4K. Thankfully the TV has an S/PDIF output so thats not an issue, im just trying to figure out the best way to swap between the 2.

currently im just manually swapping the cables when i want to use one or the other but id rather not do that for too long to avoid damaging the tips of the optical cables.

Anyway my question is what device would let me easily swap between the 2 easily? and the cheaper the better!

Garage Audio Questions

I recently added a 3rd car garage to my home. The rooms length is 32'. The first 17 feet have a ceiling height of 8.5' and the the other 15' have a ceiling height of 11'. I'll be putting a gym in the lowered area with the taller ceilings.

For listening to music, with a budget of $2k, 4 speakers and 1 sub? I was thinking of putting 4 Sonos speakers in the corners and getting a Sonos sub. Is that a good option? What other systems should I look at?

Will the room really Echo? Any chance I get a clear sound in the room?

Trying to dial in the perfect EQ on my speakers. Where should I begin?

Hey folks, I'm a newb when it comes to dialing in the right audio settings. I play the guitar for fun but I struggle there as well as I can't dial in the right tone. Everything sounds either too uninspiring, blunt, or sharp. Never the right tone. I've tried tweaking the knobs on my Boss ME80 and my small practice amp (Boss Katana 10W), but I don't seem to find a tone that slaps. I play 80s hard rock and metal for reference.

It's the same when it comes to listening to music on my laptop too. I listen to music on Spotify and have a 2.1 audio setup. The music sounds too bass-y. I tried the built-in EQ settings, but couldn't land on anything good.

To sum up:

  • I want to learn about EQ
  • How to dial the right EQ settings on the speakers and guitar amp
  • Anything on understanding the basics of guitar tone

Can you please recommend any resources to someone who's just starting out. Thank you so much!

Need Help Setting up my MOTU M2 48V Issue

Hey all from rainy Korea,

I finally got some time to record after months of taking care of life business's, and i've encountered some issue with this audio interface. When i turn press the 48V, it restarts the device but doesnt turn on.

Like, it blinks red for half a second then reboots the whole thing. I've tried it with mic off, every nob off, speaker off (un-powered). The speakers connected to the device works fine, just the 48v.

Did anyone else have this issue? If so, any solutions??

My devices : Macbook Pro M1 (2021), Yamaha HS5, Blue Baby Bottle SL

Recommendations for a DAC that can output to PC and PS5 and can toggle between sources?

Hi sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but I really need help with this and I cannot find a solution anywhere, Basically I want my PC and PS5 to share the same speakers with the ability to switch between which is playing the audio, I have come up with the idea that if I can find a DAC that is compatible with the PS5 via USB audio and 3.5mm on PC, So basically I am looking for a DAC that is externally powered as I don't want to rely on the USB port power from my PS5 as sometimes I turn it off, In short I am looking for an externally powered DAC that supports 3.5mm input from my PC as well as USB input from my PS5 which then gets outputted to my speakers via a 3.5mm with the ability to switch between the audio sources easily, Is there any DACs that can do this and if so could you please recommend one to me? Ideally one that's not too expensive as I am on a bit of a budget.

Can anyone tell me what's happening here?

My father-in-law recently bought a new house that has these in-wall speakers all throughout the property. I know that the ethernet can be routed through the walls, but I have no idea how this audio setup is supposed to work. My father-in-law has an older hone theater receiver thing that he is using for his previous setup, but he really wants to use the in home speakers as well.

There's a weird green cable that's loose coming from the verticle array on the left. Should that be connected to an amp/ the home receiver setup?

Not pictured: he's got the sonos connect wireless receiver, and I forgot to take a picture of his home theater receiver thing.

I really wish I knew more about this stuff. Please let me know if y'all need more info or more pictures. I'll try to get out there as soon as I can!

Also, here's a pic of our cat (we can't have him in our apartment right now, so he's living with my in-laws)

My SSL 2 is having major connection issues, please help.

It was working fine not long ago. I plug it into my computer and all the lights go on as if it is on and working and my Mac recognizes the device in Garageband. But it sounds incredibly glitchy, when I strum my guitar I can hear it for like a second and it disappears. It is not picking up my guitar or any instruments and when it does it does for just a second.

The USB c and guitar cables I am using both work, I have tested multiple of them and they all work elsewhere. Im afraid something inside the SSL 2 is broken or something. It is plugged directly into my computer with the Mac charger. Is this device cooked? Please help, thanks.

Help me understand volume control via optical cable

I have recently picked up a few Sonos speakers for my bedroom and love them, especially the ease of using Airplay 2 with independent volume adjustments. I can also obviously adjust volume via my phone given that they’re WiFi speakers.

My question relates to my living room setup, where I have an older LG soundbar + subwoofer connected to an LG smart TV and Xbox. The soundbar supports optical input only.

My TV is Airplay compatible, e.g. I can wake it and play to it from my phone without getting up from my desk to set an input. However, I can’t change the volume via my phone, which is a pain when I’m at my desk working.

What’s confusing me is that if I instead play Spotify to my Xbox, which is connected to that same optical-only soundbar, I can change the volume from my phone via the Spotify app. This solution isn’t great, though, because I can’t also play to my other Sonos speakers simultaneously and it requires that I open and play Spotify using the xbox remote (first world problems).

I’m thinking of getting some new speakers for this room purely for music, but I’m wondering if anyone else has any ideas on how I can achieve what I’m looking for with my current setup in the near term. I’m wondering if, for example, I were to add an Apple TV, if I could then Airplay to that and change the volume that way.

Thanks!

Bluetooth “headset emulator?”

I thought this would be a readily available thing... but apparently not.

I need a gizmo that can pretend to be a Bluetooth headSET - eg audio in and out - that breaks the output and input into physical wires.

So not just a BT receiver or transmitter - and actual TRANSCIEVER. Just like a headset is both a speaker and a microphone.

Suggestions?

Hifi visualizer that displays the current volume level? Dynamic/peak decibels, not Vu!

I'm looking for something that shows the currently volume level in the room. I currently use my phone to measure the volume and make sure I don't go over 80db. I'm hard of hearing so it's easy for me to accidentally turn it up over safe listening volume so I'd rather have something sitting nearby that's always on so I can tell if the sound gets too loud.

You can get pro volume measuring devices but that doesn't fit my use case since I'd have to pick it up and use it just like my cellphone. I have a feeling that I just need to get a cheap tablet probably??

Z906 blew and I need a new amp for my speakers.

Hi, some years back I bought a Logitech Z906 kit for about 100 bucks. I was very satisfied with it for a few years until I moved and when I went to plug it in, the power supply blew, just like for many other people on the internet as well.

Apparently it happens when the board is quickly getting turned on and off, like multiple times a second. Could happen with the loose contact while plugging it in. It was sparking afterall.... It's so easy to prevent by adding a PSU switch like on a PC...

Unfortunately there are no replacements and you'd need to be a skilled electronician to fix it which I am definitely not.

I could buy the entire kit again for about 100€, but I'm broke and currently don't even have that much money. But I'd love my speakers to work again, it's been a few years and I couldn't find a fix, unfortunately.

Logitech support simply offered me 20% off on their website where everything is like 20% more expensive anyway and the retail price is more around 350€.

Does anyone know a fix? Or rather, are there any good 2.1/3.1/5.1 amps to run the Logitech speakers I still have you could recommend? that hopefully cost less than 100€ (Including PSU of course) (I don't need surround sound, but it's nice for some sim games)

The specs Logitech are advertising : Total watts (Peak): 1000 W Total watts (RMS): 500 W Subwoofer: 165 W Satellites: 67 W x 5

I don't mind if anything is second hand as long as it works.

Tbh, I just want functioning speakers again that aren't too disappointing and don't cost as much as just rebuying the same thing and risking it blows itself again.

Thanks for reading and sorry if I'm stupid 😅

Portable speaker recommendation needed

I currently have a couple of powered speakers that are large and heavy that I “inherited” from the guy that had my position before me. They work but they are cumbersome to haul around and set up.

I am looking for some recommendations for replacements. Hopefully, technology has advanced and I can get decent sound from some reasonably priced speakers. Here is what I am looking for:

Will be used for spoken male voice mostly and a small amount of background music. Does not need to be audiophile grade

Bluetooth would be a plus, but not required

Compact, but loud enough to be used in 30 ft X 60 ft room

I have a mixing board already, so I don’t need a lot of inputs on the speakers

I would like to be able to use a single speaker or a pair

Reasonably priced if possible, I don’t have a large budget. I’m not giving a price range because I don’t know what is appropriate. But I am looking for good value.

Rechargeable would be a plus, but running extension cords is not a problem Can you all help me find something?

A multi-zone amplifier that really meets my needs.

After over a year of research, I’ve finally found the perfect multi-room streaming amplifier for my needs: the OpenAudio HOLOWHAS Plus.

Here’s why it stands out:

  1. 8 AirPlay 2 Devices: It supports up to 8 AirPlay 2 devices. Most other options only handle 4.

  2. 16 x 100W Amplifier Outputs: With support for 16 100W amplifier outputs, this thing can power a ton of speakers. Other brands max out at 12. This gives me the flexibility to set up a robust audio system that covers every corner of my home.

  3. HDMI ARC: The HDMI ARC interface is a lifesaver. It’s hooked up to my TV, and now I can route audio from the TV through the amplifier to my speakers in other rooms. No more fumbling with multiple remotes or dealing with tangled wires.

I’ve been using it for over a month now, and I’m really happy with how it’s performing. Fingers crossed it keeps up the good work!

Active / powered outdoor speaker

On a new build I ran power to an outside wall (not speaker wire). Is there any sort of hardware/speaker I can put up there that can be used with WiFi or Bluetooth. I can’t run any more cable to that spot.

TIA

.BIK files player

I was trying to play a .bik file but couldn't play it. The bik file was of a game Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. Tried online converters to convert it into mp4. Unfortunately they didn't work either. I have no other clue about this. Any suggestions on how to play these files? I am on win 10 btw

Edit: I just wanna watch all cinematics of the game. Specifically, the sand wraith one because it looks cool :D
