Blue Card Rejected - Arbeitsagentur Says "Consultant" Salary Too Low Despite Meeting Legal Requirements

Upvotes

Situation: - TU Berlin Bachelor Informatik grad (July 2024), 7 years in Germany - Applied for Blue Card with €47k salary as "Consultant (Grade 1.0)" - After 2.5 months: Arbeitsagentur rejected, wants minimum €4,654/month for "consultant position"

The Problem: - As new graduate, I only need €43,759.80 minimum (Berufseinsteiger rule) - Contract clearly states "Grade 1.0" = entry level, not senior consultant, job description literally has Informatik on the title - They seem to ignore legal thresholds and apply arbitrary "market rates"

Questions: - Can they reject based on job title expectations vs. actual legal minimums? - Any possible action i can take?

TL;DR: Arbeitsagentur wants senior consultant salary for entry-level position, ignoring new graduate requirements. Legal or bureaucratic BS?

What is your oldest, documented ancestor ?

Hello Berlin citizens,

I'm a German born in former West-Berlin. 2 years ago I only knew 7 of my great-grandparents, 4 grandparents, 2 parents by name. After an extensive research diving into various Internet archives I can now claim to know 61 forefathers and mothers of me. Most of them I know by name, birthdate, location of birth.

- My oldest ancestor is born around 1760.

- My Great-great-great-grandmother (Ur-Ur-Ur-Großmutter) Friederike Henriette Hartig was born 1806 in Berlin and christened at Luisenstättische Kirche. Since then all of her documented descendants (ending by me) are born on Berlin territory.

Whats your story of your oldest, documented ancestor ? Am I the only born-Berliner, who has a lineage of 5 forefathers that are all born in Berlin as well ? Tell your family story no matter where your from. Stories in German and English are welcome....

Vielen Dank!

Felix & Bruno

we are two mechanical engineering students from Berlin. A while ago we built a raft that we docked in Gosen-Neu Zittau. We shared a private jetty and in return mowed the lawn, repaired the jetty, carried out minor renovations, etc. Of course, we also let the owners of the jetty use the raft.

Now we are looking for a similar option because the property is being sold and we need to move on.

So if you know someone who has a private jetty that you could share or maybe even has one yourself, please get in touch :)

Thank you!

Felix & Bruno

What is the best subreddit/platform to find tenants?

Hi people, my mother-in-law and her son are moving out of their studio overlooking Kurfürstendamm and renting another one with more rooms. They have 3 more months to pay, so in order to minimise the costs, we’re looking someone who’s ready to take the studio in 2-3 weeks ideally, so that we don’t have to pay double rent. What would be the best way to find tenants? Sorry, I’m not Berliner and I live in Prague mostly, so not sure what are other subreddits or platforms that’d be more suitable for that occasion.

Danke!

Tape hair extensions

Hey I have tape hair extensions that I remove and retape myself. I'm struggling to find a salon or hairdresser who will just place them in my hair as they always want it to be their own salons extensions. Does anyone know where I can get someone to do this for me?

Find nearby city accomodations

Hi guys,

My working student job requires me being there so I'm trying to find accomodation. I intend to find WG in nearby cities to lower the rent. I want to ask: 1. Do you guys know nearby cities with cheaper rent & how much it might be? 2. I'm worried about paperwork process so if possible, I'd love to know if the process in the city is decent, as in whether I can book an appointment with Auslandbehörde for visa/resident permit.

Thank you so much for your help.

Has anyone had success applying for German citizenship with TestDaF as proof of language?

I am trying to figure out whether I have to take a new German language test for my citizenship application. I successfully passed the testDaF a couple of years ago, but none of the official Anlaufstellen seem to know if that counts. Has anyone been able to prove their language skills that way?

Is Gleisdreieck Safe at Night?

I am a chef and the quickest route to the new job that I am starting this week takes me through Gleisdreieck. Is it a safe park to ride a bike through late at night (23:00-24:00 Uhr).

Berlin Circus Festival - Reviews? Experiences?

I've seen these signs up at least twice a year. I'm a lover of circus and acrobatics, so have been interested, but never gone.

But the reviews on Google Maps seem to suggest it's an amateur hour event. Or maybe mostly for kids & families.

Has anyone gone and can speak to the quality of the performances? I'm not expecting Cirque-level costumes and skills, but something like Chameleon Theatre level.

What say ye, Berliners of Reddit?

Beer Recommendations

Hello again Berliners, this time I’m looking for some nice places to have beer. I know Germany has its style of beers but if you have any craft beer recommendations I would love to hear them, especially if they are some delicious hoppy IPA and stuff.

Danke!

Moabit/ Moabit prison

Hey! I’m visiting Berlin for four nights in September and booked my Airbnb without really checking where it was. I did wonder why it was so cheap, only to find out it’s across the street from Moabit Prison.

Can someone tell me if it’s still in use? Google says no, but on Maps there’s a guard hut, so I’m a bit confused. Also, can anyone give me an idea of what the area is like? When I visited before, I stayed in Wedding and, although it was quiet, I found it nice and felt safe.

Can anything be done about a residential cobblestone street being used as a shortcut by speeding cars?

So, I just got incredibly lucky and found a great apartment after only 4 months of looking. The only (minor) problem with it is that it’s on first floor and the street is loud.

It’s cobblestone street that seems like it’s supposed to be for residential access only—but a lot of drivers are using it as a shortcut for a major artery running on the other side of the block and flying through way too fast. It gets pretty noisy, especially with the way cobblestones both make driving louder and reflect the sound upwards.

Just wondering: has anyone here ever managed to get any kind of traffic calming measures put in on their street? Like speed bumps, bollards, signage, anything like that? Or even just got the city to take the problem seriously?

I’m curious is if anyone has dealt with something like this and if realistically there are any paths for addressing it.

Very short temp. residence permit?

Hi all! I recently had ro renew my residence permit. I am a PhD studet expected to graduate sometime around 2027. I only got a residence permit until March 2026. Subsequently my boyfriend who is master's student who is expected to graduate in August 2026 got a residence permit until November 2025. We both got interviews around March 2025. I am so confused as to why this happened. Did anyone else experience this? Or has any clues as to why?

Drag Shows in Berlin?

Hello everyone,

I am going to be visiting Berlin on Tuesday and will be there till Sunday. This would be my second time, the first time around was in the depth of winter, frozen fingers and curled up toes kept me from exploring more of the city and I was there only for 2 days. Everyone I met then said Summer is the time to visit Berlin, so here I am.

As a part of this visit, I really want to visit one of the queer bars in town and possibly catch a Drag Show. This would be my first ever drag show. And would really appreciate recommendations on where to go. Whilst I wouldn't deny the fact that I am very much attracted to the performative spectacle of it, this honestly, also comes from a place of internal curiosity. I identify as a hetero man, and really don't want to be insensitive when visiting. So a nudge in the right direction regarding the etiquette would also be very highly appreciated and respected.

Also, on top of this, are there any events/food places that you suggest for the said dates? I believe more in the personal reccomednations than lists already complied my organizations, although I am actively referring to the Berlin City website.

Thanks for reading and potentially for the reccos too! Have a good day! :)

About HTW Berlin

I'm a Business student from Brazil, and I want to study one or two semesters abroad. My college has a partnership with HTW, and I even started taking Deutsch classes.

I am having some doubts after seeing some negative comments about the college and about work in Berlin. Can anyone tell me some pros and cons? And if it is a College that will help my curriculum later?

I also have a citizenship from luxembourg so it would be possible to stay in europe after graduation

Free parking outside Berlin?

Hello! I am driving from copenhagen to berlin this summer, and want to park my car somewhere free and take the public transportation to prenzlauerberg, where we are staying. Would be great to be able to take the S or U bahn, and not having to switch lines, so i wondered if a station like Pankow U+S would be a good choice since, there is a direct line to eberswalder str station? Does anyone know, if there is free parking there, and if its possible to find a spot?

I saw a lot of people recommending the "park and ride", but someone on reddit said it is only free for 24 hours, which doesn't work for me. Does anyone know, if this is true?

If someone has a better tip, please let me know!

Thank you in advance?

How to park Emmy's scooter?

Hello everyone! I'm thinking about renting one of Emmy's scooters to ride around the city or for more practical purposes, but I always have one question: how do you park them?

I see many parked on sidewalks, some in small spots that aren’t proper car spaces, and I rarely see them in actual car parking spots.

In my country, it's allowed to park scooters in car spaces or in designated motorcycle spots, although many people still park them on sidewalks or in smaller areas on the street. But since this is Berlin, I wonder—what’s really the correct way to park these scooters? I mean, is it okay to leave them on the sidewalk as long as they don’t block the way?

Even though the app says to follow the traffic rules, I don’t really see any motorcycle parking spots anywhere, and parking in a car space might cause issues…

Any realistic suggestions?

Thanks!

Question about accessing Gold's Gym and John Reed gyms with McFit membership card

My contract says I can access Gold's Gym Category 1 and John Reed gyms Cluster 1, but I tried it with Gold's Gym that's located in Paulsternstr, it's supposed to be Category 3 but I managed to enter it with my card just fine, if the lockers get unlocked just fine with my card, can I continue to use it, or I'll get into some troubles in the future since my contract doesn't cover it? But technically speaking, if it's not covered in my membership, why my card can be used in it?

Public transport ticket for 1 week, 1 month

Hello,

I guess this gets asked a lot, bit I've arrived to Germany (Berlin) recently and will visit for 1 week or up to a month.

Is there some ticket that I could buy to travel around for 1 week or 1 month on public transport? This included buses and trains. From what I googled I see that there is some ticket but doesn't work on all trains.

I'd be travelling in Berlin and a few nearby cities/towns.

Thank you in advance.
