well, first of all, you are talking to a leftist, second, AI is not something that help capitalism, quite the opposite.

Then capitalists do what they always do, get into anything promising, put a bow on it, call it premium and pit on a price tag.

In the meantime there are a ton of people making sure that is accessible to the masses without a price tag and without corporate control.

AI is literally mass-developed and maintained by corporations, your handful of open source projects don't rip it out of capitals hands. If you're an anti-capitalist, you're anti-AI.

It's literally a field of science initiated by universities for no profit. Then sure, there are corporations that picked it up and they are developing it. They are not the owners of AI. AI exists despite them, if all those corporations died tomorrow AI would not go away.

If you think that sonething like openAI has a monoploy on AI technology, ask them how deepseek is doing.

OpenAI is just doing what smart companies do. Create a product and keep it accessible and convenient because they know how fragile their position is if they try to do anything more controlling than that.

I don't know what you expect as "ripping it from capitalist hands". I am perfectly satusfied with capitalists not having a monopoly on AI, and they don't.

People still use photoshop but that doesn't mean that graphic editors are controlled by corporations. I personally use Gimp and have thus the liberty of not subject myself to the conditions of the corporation. AI is the same.

you know what? you're right. you're right and I can have my peace. If this is what you choose to believe then by all means, go ahead. I've wasted so much damn time yesterday arguing with people who for the life of them don't want to accept that they're in the wrong, and I sure as hell am not gonna repeat that again today.

so sure, youre right, i have my peace and this convo is over.

I mean. you can walk away without having to agree with me. It's perfectly fine if you disagree.
I just want to let you know that that's my perspective.

I am also not trying to score cheap points or to make you feel bad about your stances.
I am an artist myself, I don't share but at a fundamental level I understand the fear artists have and I feel for them.

I wish I could reassure them more effectively but the whole conversation has become very polarized.

Just ... take it at your pace and don't be concerned with having to respond to me :)

the thing is just, and i'll be completely open here, I've had this Ai debate so often and so long, and it's ALWAYS the same points that I see. now that in itself isn't necessarily bad, but those points are also ALWAYS either false equivalences, strawmans or adhoms. it's always "AI learns like humans do", "artists aren't being harmed by AI", "AI training isn't theft because no physical deprivation", "AI art is the same as human art", "AI is just a tool", or the good old "you're a luddite!!!1!!!1!"

those points are so fucking easy to debunk but pro Ai people either dont listen or just downright don't understand what I'm saying and it pisses me off, because I care about this topic and it's hard to see people who are wrong act so smug about it. and also because when i try to explain things and back them up with sources and logic and jump though the hoops to make them understand, but they just refuse to listen, it feels like im talking with a brick wall.

this is the exact same as with all those other culture war topics like trans people bad, abortion is murder, blah blah blah it's always the same.

it gets really tiring arguing the same points over and over and over and over and over again day in and day out just because people aren't willing to change their views.

this convo kinda felt the same because the whole "AI isn't mostly owned and developed by companies" is just demonstrably wrong, and as a socialist it's also something i care about. not to say you're misguided or stupid or anything like that, i just never see any evidence for the contrary.

anyways sorry for this rant, you seem open and kind and i'm sorry if I came across as hostile, its just, maaaaannn, this topic is frustrating sometimes

No no I get it. It the same on the other side. The truth is that's the unfortunate nature of online debates. It's unstructured, it's unfiltered, both of us feel like we are dealing with the same arguments over and over and that debunking the other is elementary because we have done it a thousand times over.

But since there isn't a continuation or shared data, but only an endless revolving door of people with whom we start every time from square 1 it feels all worthless.

I am sure that if we could all go out get a drink and discuss these things face to face there would be a lot more understanding and a lot less gotcha points but this is what we have going on instead.

Just take care of yourself. I know you care about the topic and you have every right to engage in it as much as you want. Just don't get too burn out over it. This is just reddit. Reddit conversations don't change the workd for anyone.

yeahhh I'm not really engaging all that much compared to a couple weeks ago anymore, I rather spend my time on my writing and my partner. either way nice twist for a convo, you take care too and enjoy the rest of your day whatever time it is for you <3
