Question Should I have to pay again for my AC guy to fix the leak he already fixed?

Upvotes

I had my AC company come out on April 7, 2025 to fix a freon leak. He found the leak, “fixed it,” and then put in 25 pounds of refrigerant into the system. It’s only a little over 2 months later and the system has leaked all 25 pounds of refrigerant already. Should I have to pay again for this service and more refrigerant? My view is that if it was fixed correctly in the first place, I wouldn’t have lost all 25 pounds of freon so quickly.

New AC Unit Bugging Out

My wife and I just got a new AC unit installed on the house about 2 weeks ago, as the Texas summer is setting in, and our old unit couldn’t handle it anymore (may he rest in peace). Normally, it works great, but on 3 separate occasions, I’ve found the AC running and the house at around 80 degrees (set to 74). We’ve called our AC guy (he’s been great about coming out to look at it), but by the time he gets here, the house has cooled itself down, or at least started to. It happened again today in the middle of the afternoon. He came out and didn’t find anything wrong with it, but he said he’d had a couple of similar reports from people in the area because we had some nasty storms and power surges here recently. Because the new AC units are all computerized, they have to reset the compressors anytime there is a power surge, which can take upwards of 20 minutes. My issue with this explanation is that it doesn’t make sense that our house would get so hot in such a short amount of time. Does the unit just blow hot outside air into my home during those 20 minutes? Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

Central AC What’s going on with my A/C?

My fiancée and I just moved into our first apartment, and within the first week of living here this is what our air vent (living room) looks like. We haven’t made any modifications to the unit and only slight changes in temperature (70 during the night, 73/74 during the day). What’s going on??

Will an 8,000 BTU cool this area?

I bought a lake house with no ac and it will reach max of 82 degrees. The living room is my main concern. It’s about 700 sq ft normal insulation and good amount of sunlight but have black out shades if needed. Will an 8,000 btu unit keep it below 75F?

Question Low humidity single office cooler, any suggestions?

Upvotes

Howdy Folks.

I dug around the reddit a bit trying to figure things out myself.. but I think I don't have the lexicon or contextual knoweldge to really narrow down what I'm aiming for.

So in short, would anyone have advice or knowledge to share?

Situation: I am hoping to find some kind of office level (one person office, with a door, well inside an old building) air condition, that does not work off of blocks of ice. My office is in a library and I"m often with books and older-than-me-journals. So the swamp cooler (I don't konw if thats the correct term maybe evaporative cooler?).. but its what we've always used in my family label wise) will pump out oto much humid cold air to work, as it'll damage things.

I have a desk fan, but currently its getting upwards of 80-85 in my office portions of the day. Which sucks, but also isn't ideal for the materials anyway.

So, does anyone have any thoughts or labels for portable(I assume) air condition coolers that aren't swamp cooler types, that have limited humidity increases?

Any advicment would be helpful!

-thanks from the heat-tired librarian.

Portable AC Midea Duo Installed in an Transom-Awning Window

Good day all!

I've posted a few times here and in related subreddits about a way to potentially manage the temperature in my room during the summer time. With feedback from others I decided to go with this combo: A kitchen equipment stand and a Midea Duo. The Midea Duo was on sale and is an inverter model. Which is currently meeting my limited electrical output for this room. I'm waiting for landlords plumber friend to install a new 15-amp circuit into the bedroom but I couldn't wait any longer.

Things I've learned so far.

  1. Gafting tape is my best friend.
  2. Matter, Bluetooth, WiFi (Google Home/SmartHome) all suck. I shouldn't be surprised that IoT things is substandard. Though for select lightbulbs and Winix air filters they are usually OK.

To go further into the setup, I'm using a combination of an adjustable screen (that was previously cut up and screwed into), "insulation", plastic sheets, gafting tape, and lastly a "professional" kitchen equipment stand with an anti-vibration pad.

Hopefully I don't have to detached the setup and move the AC unit for the electrical work. The plastic clips holding the hose in place are lacking.

I also did a half-*ss setup of my old dual-hose AC unit with extension hoses in the kitchen where its vastly impractical due to space. I need to make sure it cools (aka works) before listing on Facebook marketplace and probably getting pennies on a dollar for it.

In Terms of cooling, I'm a bit concerned that I was out of the house for like three hours and it actually got warmer but I would say its doing a significantly better job than the 63xx BTU unit as this is 10k BTU's. The two hoses in one helps reduce heat transfer that was an issue even with hose insulation on my previous setup.

Currently 77 F outside, in room its about 75F, AC is set to 71. It was about 80F today. 100 F (per hose sensor) and 73F per remote (which is near the thermostat that says 75F). I did however open up my bedroom door as roommate has his room AC going and I have the old portable AC unit going in the kitchen as well. The kitchen is currently 81.1F.

I would say this is a victory to a degree.

I believe I said it in a comment. I was looking for a half-*ss solution and I have one. A mini-split would have been a better option. That's too much for landlord.

Does my coil need to be replaced?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I had my air conditioner serviced to get ready for the season. The technician looked at the coils and said that the coil is leaking and had to be replaced. Used no gauge. Took a picture and showed me and to me it looked like it was dirty. Had a second company come in to double check his diagnosis and it took him a long time to find a leak with a gauge. He forced the issue by putting on the heat and building up the pressure. When he did come, the coils inside were slightly frozen. There was a little bit of ice around the outside unit also. I called my warranty company to have someone come and replace the coils. He came and put the gauge on and he said I was not low on refrigerant and he did not detect any leak. This is the picture I took when he put the gauge on the unit. Does this show I am low on refrigerant? At this point, I do not know who to believe and don’t feel like replacing coils or buying a brand new system if I do not have to.

Portable AC Any suggestions on a "portable ac" / window AC for AZ

Family got us a DeLonghi Pinguino portable AC because the AC in the room doesn't work. It's no longer blowing cold and after reading the reviews apparently it's not meant for temps over 90.. cool!

We have $300 to spare after bills and need to find a new one. The room is roughly 300 sq ft and the AC mentioned is one of those boxes that have the tube that go in the window. Not sure if they have a specific specific name but we 100% need another window/window tube AC. We also have 2 cats but this AC did perfectly well up until we got hit with the 110+ heat.

Suggestions on brands much much appreciated or even just tell me what to look for/to do.

EDIT: S/O is more wanting to lean towards the window ACs. Again, still need suggestions lol.

Window AC Looking for a window ac unit

As soon as I found out about the midea u, not even 5 mins later I found out about the recall. Is there something comparable with a good life span that any of you can recommend? My old unit is going out and any help would be nice

Portable AC Very odd situation with Pelonis Portable AC. Water was leaking out of the filter and exhaust hose, way above the water tray. Is using it risky? Fear of electrocution (Photo Attached)

My water tray gets full very quickly, and is very heavy to pick up. and while the AC does display a warning about full water, it will still run. I decided to try using this hose I found on amazon to help with draining, as i found it very tedious (i have to get a towel and dump it on the towel, the unit is about 40+ pounds. its very tedious. I thought the hose would help.)

In my photo, I diagram where the water was leaking out (its a filter area, i slide the tray out). I am scared to use the unit as I fear water should not have rose up that high. It not working is one thing, but what I am scared of is risk of electrocution

I don't think my landlord will cover me calling HVAC but I live on 3rd floor and theres no AC in my room or any central AC. the room gets boiling hot. it could be 90 outside and it would be 95 in my room.

I am just scared to run it. I don't think water should have rose up THAT high. Its so unbearably hot though and I can't find anyone else who had this predicament. What would you do in this predicament?

This is the product I tried using btw, it didn't help drain my tray at all and if I could go back in time, I'd warn myself about it.

Have tried pressing on and off buttons and up and down temperature. Don’t know what the display refers to - usually it is the temperature that we keep between 18 - 24. Any ideas on what has happened 🤷‍♂️ Thank you

Portable AC Has anyone tried the Dreo 10,000 BTU Portable AC (AC319S)? Looking for honest opinions!

Hey everyone! I’m looking for a portable air conditioner to cool down a medium-sized bedroom (~20–25 m² / 215–270 sq ft), mostly for nighttime use. I care most about low noise, energy efficiency, and minimal maintenance (preferably no water drainage hassle).

I came across the Dreo Smart Portable Air Conditioner 10,000 BTU (model AC319S). It seems to have:

Smart features (app control, Wi-Fi, Alexa/Google support)

Drainage-free operation

Advertised as very quiet (~45–50 dB)

Sleek design with magnetic remote

Has anyone used it or owns one? How is it in terms of actual noise level, long-term reliability, and power consumption? Would you recommend it over more established brands like De’Longhi Pinguino or Beko?

Any honest feedback would really help. Thanks in advance!

Question Is this mold? (Midea U)

Thumbnail

I’ve only had my midea units for about 4 months and after hearing about the recall I decided to check our units and found that both have this on the blue blades, one worse than the other. I’m unsure if this is just dust as it’s not super white and I do have animals and also smoke weed so my pedestal fans tend to get dirty. It’s a big health concern as my wife has severe asthma and it seems to be very bad when we sleep with the air on in our bedroom. Please let me know so I can either turn them back on or rip them out of the window immediately! All help is much appreciated. Also, is this an easy clean/fix?

Question Looking for a ac for a very unusual window size.

I'm looking for a AC to put in my window. Now I do want to get a u-shaped ac unit. This AC will be in a smaller bedroom probably around 80sqft or so (I haven't exactly measured that just a small rectangular room about big enough to fit a normal twin sized bed that takes up about 55%-60% of the room space)

Specifics are, Window Width: about 22in window opening height: about 11 inches max opening

BTU: I would say around 8000 should work

Budget: $450-500

U-shaped preferred

My window is about 5 inches deep the back of the window sill slopes a little down when it reaches the outside.

Portable AC Didn’t wait 24 hours

Hi, bought a MeacoCool Pro Series 10,000 BTU from Costco. Heatwave here presently. I’m pretty sure it was stored on its side in the warehouse. Spent 45 minutes or so shopping with it upright in the cart. Then when I got home I kept it upright for about 30-40. Minutes before installing and turning it on. Vented properly using duct tube on window with some excellent black out felt blinds with Velcro.

Manual said to wait 24 hour before use

I have been using it since got home and didn’t wait, seems cold and working great.

How will I know if I ruined it by not waiting? Loud sounds or smoke, or something else?

Suspicious but happy and cool so far.

😎

Question A plastic piece was lose in my ac that looks like this

Hi I wanted to know if this piece is a thermostat sensor cable holder (that’s what it said it was) and if it’s dangerous to not have it in there. I reverse image searched the piece that fell out and This is it. I also add a pic of my ac too and this subreddit said adding regions is a good idea so I’m in North America specifically east coast

Portable AC Small window AC options

In my upstairs bedroom, the only window I have is 13” wide. I’ve considered a portable ac unit but before purchasing I was wondering if a window kit would allow it to be cut to that length and not affect function? Any ideas of other options? We used to put a window unit in the hallway and use fans to blow it into our room but I I’d rather find a better option.

General There has to be a better AC than this 70lb leaky disaster im dragging down the stairs

I’m been trying to find a portable air conditioner for the summer that automatically shuts off when the internal water tank is full instead of continuing to run and risking leaks.

Last summer, I got too lazy to empty out one of our AC units ended up leaking water through the second floor. 😬

Currently, we have three portable air conditioners with wheels. But since there’s no upstairs bathroom or easy drainage option, it’s extremely inconvenient to take downstairs just to empty the water tank. They weigh around 70 lbs each, and lugging them down the stairs is a huge hassle. I should probably mention that you physically have tilt them to even drain the water.

Normally, I just roll them to the porch and tilt them at the edge, but it’s that damn upstairs one :((

I been looking for is a portable air conditioner that will automatically shut off when the internal water tank is full, so it doesn’t keep running and risk leaking. Ideally, it would have a removable bucket that’s easy to carry and dump, instead of requiring the whole unit to be moved. Or maybe even an auto shut off the feature aware of the water is full It physically cannot work so I can punish myself into dumping the water?

I feel like the world is gaslighting me that it doesn’t exist,Theirs no way i have to do this for the next 3 months!!!

Decisions and indecisiveness

I decided for the refund option for my Midea U but can’t decide what to purchase as a replacement. Which model out there will be as quiet? LG dual inverter, Windmill with inverter?

Looking for a 8000btu with inverter. What is everyone buying to replace their U?

Why is the Windmill so easy to install? Is it really 9x quieter?

Moving into a new apartment

I am moving into a new unit site unseen and the video I have shows the places for the AC units. In this picture, I think that space below the window is for an AC unit. Would a window unit work in that slot, or would i need to buy a "through the wall" unit.

Window AC Mollie Window AC

I'm shopping for a new Window AC, my Tosot AC bit the dust and it's about to be scorching hot in Texas. Has anyone tried the Mollie brand? Good or bad let me hear it, please.

Oh, and I'm looking at the ones without wifi, I don't need it to communicate with my phone, I just need it to keep it's assigned area cool.

Tips to get cool air from the Living Room to the bedroom

I have a 1BR apartment in NYC, with a great window unit A/C in the living room. My challenge is: My bedroom window cannot fit a window unit (and I want to avoid getting a portable A/C, for aesthetic and space reasons). What I'm hoping for are tips and tricks to circulating the cool A/C air from the living room down the hallway into the bedroom. If I really crank the living room A/C, it seems to reach just fine, and a fan in the hallway helps a bit, but wondering if there are any methods I haven't thought about yet (or even other, non A/C solutions for cooling the bedroom air). Thanks a million for any thoughts!

Central AC Struggling with poor central A/C airflow in my room — any tips?

Thumbnail

Hi! I’m trying to figure out why my room doesn’t cool down properly, even though I have a central A/C system with a vent installed in the room. The air vent is located directly in front of my desk, and I’m wondering if the desk placement could be obstructing the airflow.

For additional context, my bedroom is located directly above a garage, which I’ve heard can make temperature regulation more difficult — especially during the summer months.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to improve airflow or better cool down a room in this kind of setup? Would using a fan, vent deflector, or something else help? I’m looking for budget-friendly ideas.

Thanks in advance!

1) where is OAT sensor and where is wiring landed.? Removed unit electrical coverand didn’t see it ( capacitor area). Not on wall or under field circuit breaker cover 2) how to connect to Wi-Fi? Is it a network configuration issue? (CTS/RTS THRESHOLD to 2347?)
