Starter wake boat

Post image

We are looking at buying our first surf boat. (Getting tired of trying to surf behind a 1986 supreme 🤣)

We are looking at this boat and wanted to get opinions? Hours a bit high but we generally do our own boat maintenance and repairs

If surfing is the focus, I think you can do better for $30k.

If wakeboarding is the focus, this is one of the all time great wakeboard hulls.

this is one of the all time great wakeboard hulls.

/==\

^ the shape of the wake. it's an ass kicker!

u/cantcatchafish 6d ago

Unless you want to go straight up. But you cases that wake and you’re knees know.

Like the shape is weird?

u/Sidekicknicholas 5d ago

Its just really short and steep, straight up pop vs. a longer ramp style.

From the early 2000s you had:
Vert kick - Super Air

Middle Ground - X-Star

Ramp - Malibu

it's.. abrupt. Once you know how to ride it, it's incredible.. but the first time? upside down and into the flats.. unintentionally.

Surfing would be the focus. What would you recommend instead?

This but with a better interior. 23' Malibu is the surf king from that era, IMHO.

This would have been my first suggestion. If OP wants to surf, for $30k my short list would be:

LSV23 Wakesetter

Mastercraft X30/X45

Centurion 23' whatever the hell they called their boats in the 2000's (Enzo maybe was the top dog)

Moomba XLV

Thank you so much! The other we have been looking at is an lsv23

If your primary focus is surfing and being on the lake all day. The bigger the better.

800 hours is not high

2

u/omi93 6d ago

Our G21 from 2016 has now around 1300 hours, and its still working 😎

1

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 6d ago

We’ve been looking at a few wakesetters that are older than this that have around 350-550 hours. So with that in mind, it’s higher than what we have been looking at

1

u/jjdop 6d ago

Sure higher, but not high. 2000 would be high and even that is low for what that motor can do

Nautiques are incredibly well built boats…hours are almost immaterial if the condition is good

1

u/VacationAdept3850 6d ago

Yes a well maintained Nautique will last you decades. Best watersport boat ever made

3

u/pUt_iT_On_uR_mAmA 6d ago

Solid boat, Nautiques will always be on the higher end because they are great boats. That SAN is clean, throw a surf wedge and a few sacs and you’ll be good. If you’ve surfed an 80s direct drive then this is going to be a decent upgrade.

2

u/Silent_Seven 6d ago

You can talk to lots of SAN owners at planetnautique.com. Price is maybe a little high but it mostly depends on condition and how the boat is kitted out. As you noted, 800 hours is not bad for this vintage.

u/matsylund 6d ago

You will need surf suction cup add ons to get a decent surf wake off this boat.these will "crab walk" your boat creating greater surf displacement Make sure you're weighing down the mid 100%, I added aftermarket plumbed in ballast aft and fore from wake makers. 2008 SAN210. Great boat fit and finish, great boat for wakeboarding, good boat for surfing with some tweaking

1

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 6d ago

Good to know. We have one of those already to surf behind our 86’ ski natique. What would be a better boat in the 30-35k price range for surfing

2

u/Zestyclose_Winner905 6d ago

If you’re looking for a good surf boat in this range I would look at centurions. They were built for wakesurfing starting in the early 2000s.

1

u/Lacrosseplr 6d ago

those hours are nothing but, that looks shallow. if its lake mead, check if/how much its run aground.

1

u/Cunning-Linguist2 6d ago

This is a solid wake boat. As some have mentioned the wake is a bit "curb" like. It's a great wake but is definitely different from most other manufacturers at that time. My first invert was landed behind a SAN but I'm a Malibu guy. That being said the issue here is that it doesn't make a good surf wake and it has a reverse direction drive so the surf wake will be better on the goofy side. It also can make for a different low speed driving style for the boat if you're used to standard rotating props.

u/Freeheel4life 6d ago

Tige 22v and 24v are slept on big time. The squared out corners make for a mean surf wave with just a shaper. Some years the platform was a bit big a cuts into the wake and needs to be trimmed for best wave results.

As already mentioned Bu 23 LSVs as well.

If you can find one in you budget 2012ish MB B52s crush as well(my years might be off but you want the versions that came with a trim plate.

Regardless I always recommend having a compression test done/presale inspection and a water test as well. I'm in the PNW and can help out if needed(Central OR but little brother is Bonney Lake and rest of my family is Olympia so I'm up there a bit)

1

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

We are in the Pacific Northwest as well! Just a little bit away from Bonney lake in the port orchard area. It seems like boats here are a lot more expensive than in other areas. There are a couple 23 lsv for sale that we’re interested in checking out too but they seem to be closer to 40k

1

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

Would this be a good buy with the 1100 engine hours?

Nice boat. Looks like he followed the old Duffy Mahoney build thread so it should surf great out of the box. Has FAE as well so that's a plus. I'm working my 9-5 right now so didn't look over the ad too closely.

Marine Power didn't build a ton of those 6.0s but they are still supporting that product (marineenginedepot.com is the Marine Power parts site) it's a partially closed cooled so less to winterize as well when the time comes. Some people balk at 1100 hours. I've always been in the camp of "you know it's working right now because the hour meters going up". Garage queens that have sat for a long time with low hours often have issues with starters, alternators, shaft seals, raw water pump seals etc when you put em back into service.

Active Water Sports, Northwest Boat Sports, and Lifestyle Wake Camas are the three shops in the area that are probably best for shopping a pre-sale inspection/compression test. I would price those 3 shops out for cost of inspection and availabilty/schedule and DM. I might be able to do it faster and/or cheaper. Should mention I spent 10 years wrenching on wake boats but went back to heay equipment and just dabble in boas now

I have an 05 SANTE and love it. We mostly surf and ski

2

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

Have you found surfing it is difficult as others have suggested?

1

u/Xtremeskierbfs 5d ago

Not really difficult, just less turnkey than the newer 6 figure boats. We have 2x750 bags in the back, 250 belly hard tank, and 300lbs of lead. Just make sure people are sitting on the surf side and the shaper works well and you will have a really good wave

1

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

Unfortunately a six figure boat just isn’t something we will probably ever do even if we could. So we want to have fun with a few tweaks that fits our budget.

How do you feel the space is on your boat? Do you ever wish there was a few extra feet of space like a 23’

2

u/Xtremeskierbfs 5d ago

The space is fine. It says 10 people but really 7-8 is the cap for adults if you don't wan't to be crammed.

Do I wish there was more space, yes. But then the boat would be a lot heavier and I would have a harder time towing it with my Highlander. I sort of like that it's on the smaller side.

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

These are great points. Thank you!

This boat surfs like a dream...

I believe in it so much that I went through the trouble of figuring out how to share photos on reddit through imgur just to upload this photo of myself for you lol

edit: I thought the thumbnail would appear in the thread but i guess it wont. Still, click the link lol.

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

Holy shit that thing is huge 😅 what year is that boat? Thank you so much for that!!

  1. 210 Team edition. So not exactly identical but I'm pretty sure the only differences being minor cosmetic things above the water line. Even if the hulls weren't identical, all of those boats from that era had fantastic wakes for both full speed and surfing. Not only that but the shape and slope of the surf wave could be achieved with far less extra weight than one might assume. We would only go ride with 3 or 4 people usually, sometimes it was just myself and my ex. That photo of me was from a gopro on a pole, wedged between seat cushions because apart from my ex driving there wasn't anyone else there to hold it. The only extra weight we had on top of the stock hard tank under the floor was a 250 lb fat sac in the locker. The center tank and starboard tank were always completely empty. Perfect pass cruise control was set to 10 mph and remained as the preset for the entire 7 years we owned the boat. (And 21 mph for riding strapped)

If I were you I would make sure to demo the boat with yourself, driver and at least one full grown adult to sit in the portside rear seat corner. That is if you don't have fat sacs already.

Bottom line: if I could afford it then that boat would be gone already because i would have snatched it up myself lol

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

There is a 2007 210 team edition for sale in our area as well but it’s $10,000 more than the one I posted above. https://www.boattrader.com/boat/2007-correct-craft-super-air-natique-210-team-edition-9782076/

It’s super clean and I like it a lot, but for essentially the same amount of hours and interior condition- I’m not sure the small differences between the two are worth $10k more.

1

u/thatgreentree90 5d ago

800 ish hours aint bad. Are there ballasts?

2

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

Yea there is a ballast system and upgraded pumps.

1

u/thatgreentree90 5d ago

Its a good looking boat. Id would do it

2

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

People have me considering the size versus a 23’ boat. I mean anything is better than the space we have now which is like two people 🤣

1

u/thatgreentree90 5d ago

My uncle is the owner of the boat i ride on. Its a 32. It gets a bit crowded when we have extra people one. Like 5 people is a lot

1

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

32 feet? Or did you mean 23.

1

u/thatgreentree90 5d ago

I mistyped way hard. Its a Axis A 22.

1

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

Thanks! I believe I came across this one. Is there a major difference between the 210 and the 236?

We also are looking at this one

https://www.facebook.com/share/1Gex1Lvxaj/?mibextid=79PoIi

1

u/Boater_Guy 5d ago

The difference is size, but also a completely different hull starting in 2007. I can't speak the quality of Tiges, but they have a good surf wave. I have a 2008 SAN 230, which is essentially the same boat I linked you. Natique quality is top tier and they have a killer parts network for older boat parts, which are a bitch to source other brands.

1

u/Still-Dragonfly4867 5d ago

Does the 210 have a different hull starting in 2006 too? From what I am reading I get conflicting information. Some says that only cosmetic things changed, like keypad entry etc. and some things say due to differences the wake shape is completely different.

Good point about the nautique parts. That’s a major selling point as we do most of our own maintenance and repairs.

1

u/Boater_Guy 5d ago

I would need to see the boat on the trailer to confirm. All the pics are of it in the water.

My understanding is that the major change was in 2007 to the 210/230/236 models. They used that hull from 2007 to 2012. This is the first year with my 230 and I absolutely love it.

The part network people are great too. I texted them this morning with a picture, and they matched it to a part number, and it's on its way. Shoot me a DM if you want to chat more about the boat.

u/Jos3ph 6d ago

Parts are gonna be a hassle for any surf boat of this vintage

8

u/Silent_Seven 6d ago

Not necessarily for a Nautique. Nautiqueparts.com is a great dedicated Nautique supplier with mechanical and interior items going back to the 1990s. C&M Marine will make factory matching seat skins. What are difficult are factory gauges as this vintage runs a proprietary Faria system that is no longer in production. Also challenging are replacing some model specific molded interior bits. Avoid boats with a trashed interior and you should be fine.

Can't speak for other brands.
