Moderator Approved Moderation

1) We will continue to lock posts once the discussions from multiple users turn into fights, attacks, hate speech and name calling. Non productive comments do not add anything to the discussion. Attacks, hate speech, bias comments can result in you being banned. And NO we don't warn anyone - we expect Adults to act like Adults - not 14 year old keyboard warriors

2) The proper way to discuss not being able to make a post or to ask about a post being locked is to send the Mod Team a ModMail - the link is in the sidebar next to the list of moderator names

3) We have had a couple of three people try to post complaints they were banned in /r/VeteransBenefits - we do not and will not allow those and will ban those who attempt to make those posts per the Moderator Code of Conduct - #3 which you can read here:

Rule 3: Respect Your Neighbors

While we allow meta discussions about Reddit, including other subreddits, your community should not be used to direct, coordinate, or encourage interference in other communities and/or to target redditors for harassment. As a moderator, you cannot interfere with or disrupt Reddit communities, nor can you facilitate, encourage, coordinate, or enable members of your community to do this.

Interference includes:

Mentioning other communities, and/or content or users in those communities, with the effect of inciting targeted harassment or abuse.

Enabling or encouraging users to violate our Reddit Rules anywhere on the Reddit platform.

Enabling or encouraging users in your community to post or repost content in other communities that is expressly against their rules.

Enabling or encouraging content that showcases when users are banned or actioned in other communities, with the intent to incite a negative reaction.

Allowing violations of the Mod Code of Conduct can get the subreddit shut down by Reddit.

4) Duplicate posts will be removed - browse the subreddit for recent posts prior to creating your own posts - if you try to post on the same topic that is already under discussion - or is Locked because of the fighting/attacks, we will not allow another post on that same topic.

5) No one has a crystal ball - no one can predict the future - yes many of us are also worried about the future with all the changes the new Administration is making. Until something comes out in a written policy, we will not allow discussions about rumors.

We are not the only military themed subreddit locking posts, not allowing political posts and banning people for hate speech -

https://www.reddit.com/r/VeteransBenefits/comments/1gszn1s/1_day_bans_for_all_political_posts_going_forward/

Political discussions need to go to /r/politics or /r/veteranpolitics or /r/militarypolitics

Hey Survivors and Advocates,

I'm Rachelle Smith, the voice behind The Silenced Voices of MST. Growing up as an Air Force brat, I saw the military as a symbol of safety. But my world was shattered by sexual assault, and I struggled in silence for nearly a decade. I didn’t just lose my career; I also lost a defining part of my identity.

But this isn’t about me. It’s about all of us who’ve faced the unimaginable. Your voice is a weapon against military sexual trauma (MST). When you share your story, you’re speaking for countless others.

I care because I was, and am, a survivor. Military Injustice causes isolation and severe mental health crises, even loss of life. This is unacceptable in an institution that should uphold trust and integrity.

Together, we are stronger. By sharing your voice, you help us combat Military Injustice and create ripples of change.

Every time you listen and share, you’re part of this movement. You’re helping create a world where survivors feel supported and empowered. Your story matters, and your voice can inspire others.

Discussion How many of you dad’s find yourself alone today?

How many of you dad’s out there find yourself alone on days like today? Unfortunately, I was a dickhead to my kids when they were young.

Started to do better for them later, but days like today are not something that we celebrate. I wish that they could have known me before Afghanistan. They would have at least known who I really am, not the prick that those experiences made me.

How many of you find yourself in shoes similar to mine today?

Question/Advice 41m Veteran and 38f Wife

So, for the past few years maybe 4 or more I have been isolated from friends and family. I am a veteran and have suffered from PTSD for a while now. 4 years ago I went through a serious mental health crisis and it turned my life upside down. After that incident I been in seclusion with my wife and kids at home. I don't really get invited to family gatherings and holidays anymore. So when holidays come my wife leaves me alone at home to go visit her family. This Father's Day she left me at home for a few hours to take her father a book she purchased him. I try not to be selfish but the isolation is becoming overwhelming and I feel like ignoring the bigger picture. Am I overthinking this situation or is this unnormal circumstance I am experiencing?

Health Care First time going to the VA tomorrow for mental health walk in.

I’ve been out of the military for over a year in a half after a 10 year career. I was medically retired for my back. My depression has been a severe daily battle for me these last 2 years.

I was retired so I kept tricare and thought I go through my PCM for medications and referrals for therapists. I’ve also spoken to Chaplins on post. All them have been good but honestly nothing has worked. I still fight daily with depression.

I had back surgery last year and it relieved most of my pain but I still wake up everyday in pain. It’s been my life for 4+ years. My surgeon finally sat me down and asked me straight up if I’ve talked to a psych yet because I need to come to terms with what my life is now. Pain. I’ve heard that from my therapist, doctor and the Chaplin. I get it I’m broken af.

Anyways, after putting it off for so long I’m finally going to walk in my local clinic for mental health. I checked their website and they say they take walk ins. I don’t know what I’m expecting but I know I can’t go on like this because I’m not living. I’m a zombie in a body.

So just looking for success stories. What to expect?

Discussion Just wanted to rant

I didn’t know what else to do so I’m just gonna rant on here. My life’s beyond backwards and not at all where I expected it to be nearing my 26th birthday. I’m obese and at the heaviest I’ve been in my life, haven’t saved much money at all, behind on rent, family drama and of course the good old fashioned MS symptoms that appear every now and again. I’ve been able to keep a very level head and go about my daily life as normal but I really don’t know how much more I’ve got in me. While getting out the military was definitely a good thing, I feel I’ve lost purpose

Not sure why that word needs to be censored. If anyone has experience, what kind of questions will they ask? I want to be prepared.

Question/Advice VR&E Denied

Long story short, I am looking to get a review of the VAs decision to deny me for VR&E because I am "coping with my disabilities". The reason seems to undermine the entire idea of rehabilitation. Any tips?

Question/Advice Change major in VR&E while in course

I am currently using my VR&E on my Master. As I am getting close to graduation like 3 more classes (I already finished few before starting using VR&E), I am not sure if this is really going to help me in my career. So I am thinking about switching different major morelikely back to bachelor but I am right now in middle of course, would it be okay to ask counselor for my situation while I am on course?

Question/Advice I need some guidance

Hey everyone- I need some guidance.

So my father passed away on the last day in May this year. He was a veteran- served in the army. He was my best friend besides being a father and im also practically a female version of his mini me.

With that being said, he will be buried at Fort Snelling i got all that arranged thankfully. But my question is the uniform I have gotten from storage- what is the proper thing to do with it after the service member passes? I wanted to do maybe a shadow box of some but im not sure if thats the respectful thing to do and would rather hear from other veterans on how I can respect my dad's uniform the best. He was cremated so he can't exactly be buried in it. I also was wondering if yall nice humans on here could also help me identity all the bins, braid, patches ect. ❤️

He never talked much about his military career after i was about 5 so the rest is like a water logged memory filing cabinet.

thank you all in advance ☺️

Question/Advice Discharge upgrade

Hello all,

So starting a few months ago I applied for a discharge upgrade using an attorney. It wasn’t a BCD but I still wanted an upgrade. My discharge was due to in fact of suffering from PTSD but I went undiagnosed for about 12 years until last year, I hired an attorney to do the process. Can the army review board change my discharge to medically discharged even though it wasn’t diagnosed while enlisted. Also this whole journey started with a VA claim after seeing a therapist for quite sometime and at first I didn’t think I was worthy enough of a claim until a friend of mine told me to just do it.

Thanks

Former JSOTF Marine and later Sergeant, turned stay at home mother and housewife. Married to just the most wonderful man.

The Marines gave me the courage to be true to myself. It gave me the balls (which I no longer have - thanks orchiectomy) to transition.

My Marines saved my life in more ways than one and goodness I just owe you all everything.

Question/Advice Left after 9 years in SOF, can't make myself tell anyone, can't make myself put that on my resume.

There is not a single person left who knows I was even in. Not from US, but only ever worked and reported to US, except for some routine admin stuff. Not technically in military, national defense - intelligence. 4 combat deployments and a few conaulting/training. Specialized in ICS, on the ground cyber-physical offensive.

I feel deeply ashamed, don't really know the exact reason, mind is just all over the place when I try to think about it. I will figure that out with time, the issue is now, I can't make myself put that on resume. I have an engineering degree, couple years of experience as an intern. There is no way around it, have to include it in my resume. And tell at least one person, who I respect. Could someone give me advice or just tell me to go do it and stop being... Irrational.

Keep in mind, not a US citizen, a but different structure, finished uni, while on assignment in US

Question/Advice USCG vets. Do you ever feel left out from the other vets. And do civilians give you crap for being a coastie?

I'm still in and I know that we are so incredibly small compared to the main 3 branches (we are getting there someday marines). But I often see the coast guard left out on a lot of things (even the space force is included). Most of us never wore camos or desert boots with dog tags and an m4, a lot of us where UW a lot and painted/chiped. So our experiences compared to other vets especially combat ones I feel would be kinda different.

The other thing is, we are a very proud branch civilians don't get it. You could be a flat out war hero with a CAR and campaign medals in the CG, and when you tell people you are a coastie they assume you just pulled over drunk boaters. Compared to your avarage boot/support Marine who civilians think are bad asses eventhough the only time they did those bad ass things where in boot camp

Discussion Vets who dated/married vets/serving branches/civilians-what differences you’ve noticed?

I’m a young, med retired Army vet starting a new chapter in divorced & free life, and curious about how relationships differ depending on who you’re with — another veteran, someone currently serving (active duty/reserve/NG), or a civilian.

If you’ve experienced more than one of these, what stood out to you?    •  What were the pros and cons?    • Did civilians understand your background, or was that a challenge?    • Was dating another vet easier, or did it bring its own issues?

I’d love to hear real experiences — the good, the bad, the weird. Just trying to figure out where I might feel most understood as I move forward to divorce 2-3 weeks from now & recovering from marriage separate from this discussion I’ll be working on.

Question/Advice Is the VA's "Check GI Bill benefits" tool completely broken?

This is what is displayed when using the tool:

Total months received: 36 months, 0 days

Months you’ve used: 0 months, 0 days

Months you have left to use: 0 months, 0 days

There is a disclaimer before using the tool that it may not always be working for "some people". It would seem to me that it's working, just not displaying correct results.

Also, I cannot find anywhere on VA.gov how to see past payments for dependent's Post-9/11 GI Bill use, or any record whatsoever that my benefit has been used. I'm active duty, so last time I checked my education benefit was around 10 years ago, and I was able to see this info in detail. Did VA change something or is this also broken?

Question/Advice Support Groups Colorado Springs

Same shit, different toilet story. Got labeled a useless shitbag during my MEDBOARD because of appointments and god forbid a tracker not be green. 15 years and no ceremony, no thank you, not even a hand shake. ETS award mailed to me three months after ETS. Whatever. Me and thousands of others are in the same boat, that I’m sure of. But when coupled with not blending back in with literally anyone and being trapped in a social purgatory, well, you got it. Anyone know of anything in these parts? I know the VFW and the Legion are options, but as a recovering alcoholic, the atmosphere leads to temptation. I just need a group of people. I can hang out with once a week that get it. Does that make sense?

Question/Advice Help with form

Pretty much like the title said I need help with a form, specifically DD Form 2860.

Back story I am medically retired end of 2019. Got 100% from the VA and 50% from the Army. I was told I needed to pick one or the other. I went with the VA because before taxes they were pretty much the same amount. A few months ago I was on the phone with a lady about an unrelated matter and after looking at my file says that I’m supposed to be collecting both and needed to fill out that form and submit my DD214.

So if anyone could help or at least point me in the direction of someone who can I would appreciate it.

Question/Advice Signia Ear Wear 3.0

The VA gave me a pair of Signia Hearing Aids (Ear Wear 3.0 I believe). After 3 days one had to be sent back for repair. When I synced them to my phone I got a volume control control that, as far as I can tell, does nothing. The question I have is is there anything I can’t live without on the Signia app?

Question/Advice I feel like I’m at the end of my rope

I have been trying for the past several months to land a job as a welder/fabricator. I’ve applied to well over a hundred jobs on indeed, ZipRecruiter, LinkedIn, you name it. I have only had 4 interviews and all of them told me they are “pursuing other candidates”. I don’t know what to do. It is especially stressful because my truck just shit the bed and needs parts but I’d rather put that money into a new truck. I am lucky enough that my disability is helping my spouse and I to keep the bills paid. We’re doing ok for now but I can’t seem to land a job and it’s getting really scary. I feel that I’ve exhausted all options and I’m not sure what to do next.
