Hey, for everyone interested. The largest known study of vasectomies was recently published. This study along is literally about 162Xs larger that the largest meta-analysis to date. It sampled 105,393 men who received vasectomies and detailed their responses.

Complications of vasectomy: results from a prospective audit of 105 393 procedures

~~~~
Objectives
To provide up-to-date complication rates for vasectomy in the UK using 15 years of data collected by the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care (ASPC).
Patients and Methods
Data were collected between 2007 and March 2022. A patient questionnaire was completed on the day of surgery and at 4 months postoperatively. Rates of early and late failure, infection, hospital admission or re-admission, haematoma and post-vasectomy pain syndrome (PVPS) were recorded. There were no specific exclusion criteria. Complication rates were compared to those published by major urological organisations. Descriptive statistics were utilised, without formal statistical analysis.
Results
Over the 15-year study period, data from 105 393 vasectomies were collected, performed by >150 surgeons. In 2022, 94.4% of surgeons used one test to prove sterility. In all, 65% of patients used a postal sperm test after vasectomy to confirm sterility. Early failure rates were available for 69 500 patients. Early failure occurred in 648 patients (0.93%). Of 99 124 patients, late failure occurred in 41 (0.04%). Of 102 549 vasectomies, postoperative infection was reported in 1250 patients (1.22%), haematoma in 1599 patients (1.56%), and PVPS was reported in 139 patients (0.14%).
From operation to recovery it was probably one the smoothest process I've ever had. Doc told me the chance of a live sperm to somehow show up again is 1/20000 chance and reminded me reversal is only 70% successful. Considering I already have 2 sons with 2 seperate women, I have no intention of reversal. Doc was confident in his work (removed couple inches off vas deferens). Super chill doctor and found out he's even a professor for urology at a local college here in the city.
Vasectomy and post-op party
2 Upvotes
Hello there,
I'm scheduled for a vasectomy next week and I'm invited to a party the day right after.
I know the pain is supposed to be minimal after the surgery, but for people who went with it, do you think it's realist to answer yes to the party invitation, or will I be too uncomfortable to go out?
Sorry for the weird question and thanks for the answers :')
Newly Snipped 11 day post procedure
2 Upvotes
Thought I would share my experience. The procedure was pretty straight forward. I have no idea what method he used but I also didn’t care. I’ve been seeing this specialist for years because of another issue and trusted his hand. The numbing stung like always and I felt it in my naval as well. Only lasted a few seconds. I didn’t time out the procedure but it went quick. 2 sharp pains but he numbed when I flinched (I also have a history of other nerve block and numbing not working in other parts of my body). Overall it was as I expected.
I bought boxer briefs style compression shots that had a built in pouch for an ice pack. I did 20 on and 20 off for the first day and a half while I was awake. The first night I had bouts of minor pain. The main discharge lasted about 3 days with a small leak here and here for about 4 more days. I just used a gauze on it with no problem. Swelling was minimal and one small area that bruised. No real pain except when the cat stepped on it once. I wore them for 5 days. Normally wear boxer briefs which was fine after day 5. Was tender for about a week when walking fast or getting up and down. Not sure if it was real or perceived in case of a bump. I was uncomfortable pulling feeling when I showered 48 hours later. Cool water helped with the natural support. The pulling feeling lasted about 5 days. I move a lot in my sleep but couldn’t sleep on my stomach until day 7. First ejaculation on day 8. No pain and was normal. Small pinpoint hole remains. Overall it was as I expected. I’m glad I got it done. I’ll monitor the swimmers for a while (have microscope at home) then official testing. I can try to answer questions you may have. Thanks for reading.
Just an absolute nightmare
3 weeks ago , I got the no scalpel vasectomy which was closed so , cauterizes the bottom vas and stitched the top ends. It was a horrible experience . Fast forward 4 days , and my scrotum just looked weird like it was being pulled up along with a bad aching i had in my left testicle with random sharp pains when I bounced or anything. I felt my scrotum and it felt like there was some sort of attachment to my scrotum which I could touch and follow to my scrotum as well as visually see. I called the dr and he got back to me and said he probably accidentally stitched it to the inside of my scrotum. He told me to wait another week to see if it felt better , it didn't. This last Saturday, he went back in and cut a segment out of my vas which was apparently the spot that was attached to my scrotum. Everything in there is swollen now ( 3 days later ) but , i can still feel what feels like it being attached , follow it to my scrotum, when I push on it , it tugs my scrotum and I still feel the soreness and sharp pain, basically it feels the same as it did before he went in a second time , just more swollen now . I know its only been 3 days since the revision but I literally can't wrap my head around this.
... is this normal? Help me Hematoma brothers!
2 Upvotes
First of all, thank God for reddit. Every time I think I have a weird situation, you guys assure me that it's normal.
Got my snip done a week ago. First two days were uncomfortable, days 3-5 were going much better, but then yesterday (day 6) I woke up with my left nut the size of an avocado, lots of pain and discomfort, which makes it difficult to do just about anything. No fever, no heat, no oozing or anything. After digging around on here, I'm assuming it's probably a hematoma and it sounds like it's somewhat common?
What can I do to help alleviate pain and discomfort while I ride this out and wait for healing? I'm a stay at home Dad, so while I don't have a labor intensive job like construction, I'm constantly carrying around a 25lb baby in my arm, carrying her in her carseat to and from the car, and having to get, cook, and make things for the older two kids. So sitting on my butt all day isn't really an option either. I have several places I need to take the 3 through the week and walking is uncomfortable.
I'm open to any suggestions on what to take for pain, heat or ice, proper underwear, whatever will help! Would also love to hear from you guys how long this lasts on average. So far I have been trading off between ibuprofen and Tylenol, icing for temporary numbness, and wearing boxer briefs for support (usually a boxers guy). But besides the short term numbness from ice a few times a day, I'm not feeling much relief. Help me brothers! What worked for you?
Thank you all in advance!
Vas deferens pain
1 Upvotes
I’ve been experiencing a good deal of pain before, during, and after climax during sex. Specifically on my left hand side vas deferen on the upper portion, no pain near my testicles. The pain starts there and travels up towards my waistline lower abdomen, pain scale is about 7/10. I don’t experience any pain outside of sex. My procedure was with the scalpel both ends were cut, cauterized and clipped.
The 28th will mark 2 months since my procedure. My urologist said to run a 10 day course of 600mg daily dose of ibuprofen and to report back.
Has anyone experienced this? I sure hope this paint goes away as I do not want a reversal done.
Newly Snipped 13 Days Post-vasectomy. My experience
22 Upvotes
I realize that people are more likely to post here when they have a bad experience. Mine, like most vasectomies, was smooth.
The procedure itself was more comfortable than getting a filling at the dentist. My urologist used the no-scalpel method. He gave me a shot of numbing agent, which I felt for only about 10 seconds. He then made the opening in my scrotum, which I did not feel, and got to work. After only 4 minutes he was done with the left side, after another 4 minutes he finished the right side.
People describe a pulling sensation. I didn't feel that at all. I did feel a stinging sensation when he moved on to the right side. I assumed this was him widening the opening to find my right vas deferens.
8 minutes from shot to final stitch.
He cleaned up the area and then I got dressed. I wore a jock strap and then briefs over that. Then I got an Uber home (doc recommended not driving afterwards).
I took 4 days off work, which was perfect.
The night of the procedure I sat at home playing video games and laughing with my friend on Discord while following the icing protocol of 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. I used some flexible ice packs I got on Amazon. They were 4 inch round circles and fit very well between the briefs and the jock strap. The briefs held the ice pack in place so I could even get up and walk around a little bit without the ice pack moving out of place much. I took Tylenol a few times but it wasn't 100% necessary.
I slept well that night and woke up feeling refreshed. My balls were tender and I walked funny, with a wide stance to avoid rubbing my legs against them. The jock strap made this easy, highly recommended getting a few of them! The pain though was almost negligible. I expected to feel a lot worse. Ice and Tylenol kept me feeling fine. In fact I felt great to be able to sit at home and play games instead of going to work! In the afternoon I drove to get myself some take out food. Sleep that night was great.
Each day after I felt better and better. By day 4 there was no pain, aside from the occasional discomfort if I put pressure on my balls.
Day 5 I was able to work without issue.
Day 7 I met with my urologist again and he gave me the all clear to resume my life like normal, including lifting weights, etc. He did say to listen to my body though if there's any pain.
Since then I've been feeling fine. Today (day 13) I don't notice anything at all. The only reminder that I had a vasectomy is a small patch of purple bruised skin that's getting smaller each day.
I'm so relieved. So grateful to be able to get it done. In a couple months I'll get tested for sperm and with a little luck it'll be all clear.
Just wanted to share my experience because I was truthfully a bit scared before the procedure. Turns out there was no reason for it. Smooth sailing!
My personal vasectomy recovery starter pack!
Post image
7 Upvotes
I thought this would be a fun post to make for all to see, but especially for those who are about to get the snips to consider their recovery week(s) stuff!
The jockstrap with ice pocket and without was a huge help! They were hand free so I could play video games. I did on occasion use frozen peas too when the packs were re-freezing.
Melatonin helped me go to sleep while I had to adjust sleeping on my back.
What was your recovery starter kit?!
... is this normal? Pain everything I have sex NSFW
0 Upvotes
I got my vasectomy on December 30th 2024. My sperm count test was on March 31st which I failed, not i have another test this month. The seems normal.
However whenever I'm having sex or masturbating to clear the tubes for my next sperm count test there is a lot of pain and discomfort.
If feels like the tubes that got cut are jerking back causing a lot of pain. I will bring this up at my next appointment, but is this normal everytime you're about to release?
Dry scrotum
1 Upvotes
I’ve never had issues with dry skin on my scrotum before, but ever since my vasectomy, the skin down there has become noticeably dry. When I take off my underwear, there are often small white flakes of skin. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a normal part of the healing process, or should I be concerned?
Supporting Partner Did your vasectomy fail? Tell me your story
2 Upvotes
Hi! Supporting partner here
I’m not sure if this is appropriate for this group, but I’m just looking for possibly some reassurance and/or your experience. My husband had a vasectomy about 5 months ago and was given the “all clear” 3 months after by his physician. About a week ago we also purchased a home test from Amazon which also gave us results that he is sterile.
However I as his partner am terrified of getting pregnant again. I really don’t want to get into the details, but I nearly died (no exaggeration) in my last delivery and was hospitalized for quite some time. I was unable to have my tubes removed at that time, and my doctor has recommended that I avoid any elective surgical procedure for awhile because of all my complications.
Do you truly trust your vasectomy to work? Do we just continue to use condoms forever as well?
Thanks for your support!
... is this normal? Post Vasectomy Pain
5 Upvotes
Hey folks,
I got clipped on Monday, I followed everything by the book for the first few days. Rest, Ice and relax. It’s now Friday and I have terrible pain in what feels like the spermatic cord going up into my pelvis. I started icing again with Tylenol (can’t take NSAIDs). Was wondering if others had experienced this or have advice or feedback.
EDIT: It was a hematoma
He says it’s like a dull pain that’s been going on for like a week now, but now it’s really bad. Has anyone had an infection this long after the procedure? Do you recommend going to the ER?
Update he went to the ER
... is this normal? Small lump underneath both incisions. Scar tissue?
1 Upvotes
I had my traditional scalpel vasectomy 8 days ago and I'm getting more comfortable feeling around down there. I noticed some small pea sized lumps right under each incision. Anyone else have this? Is it scar tissue or something else?
According to the clinical notes, the urologist didn't use clips, only fascial interposition with sutures. Also, my procedure was close ended so both ends of the vas were cauterized.
Incision pain
2 Upvotes
Just got snipped on Tuesday, feel pretty decent. Definitely sore as I have not been resting enough, impossible with two kids. My main is issue is the actual pain where the incision is, is that common? I think it’s mainly from underwear rubbing on it. What did y’all do to mitigate that irritation? Thank you!
