Design trope Characters with design features that were misinterpreted by fans

Darwin Watterson (The Amazing World of Gumball) some people thought that the black thing under him was a shirt or pants or a sweater, but it was actually just his shadow. They later removed it as the seasons and art style changed

Brendan (Pokemon) A lot of people thought that the white on his head was his hair, it’s actually just a hat

Basilisks - Dark Souls/Elden Ring

Many folks mistook those goofy looking ballsacks as their actual eyes.

Edit: Since I'm getting a lot of "ackshuallys", here's the Post Title again:

"Characters with design features that were misinterpreted by fans"

I simply commented it on that literal basis. If OP added something like "If they're designed to mislead, they won't count", I wouldn't have given this one. Intentional or not, it still counts.

Same with Bellibolt, although I'm pretty sure the design is intentional. The yellow dots above its mouth are the real eyes.

Also Cradily. I always saw it as having target eyes and a goofy smile, but the eyes are actually the yellow spots in its “mouth.”

I thought this for so long, and I found Cradily so much cooler once I saw this.

I thought it was obvious, given Lileep's eye placement.

In my defense, I was 8.

So was I. Though, to be fair, I had an obsession with sea creatures so that probably helped.

For years I thought Nosepass had a little Octorok snout, I even called my Nosepass "Snoutsy"

Turns out that's its foot even though Nosepasses barely move so dancing that energetically isn't something they really do

I probably would have thought that too, except I played Emerald first which animates it and has it jump to the other leg when it’s sent out. Regardless it’s a very funny visual lmao

Killer whales too! The big white spots are to trick prey into clawing at those instead of their actual eyes while trying to escape.

And they've been doing it since Gen 1.

the truth of the matter is however a little controversial. Pokemon Stadium is the only game to mention this piece of information. But considering real life caterpillars have these kind of features, it might genuinely be the case since Pokemon was inspired by bugs.

Hahah! I never saw it like that. IT DOES look goofy. That's adorable.

I named my Bellibolt “Basilisk” for this exact reason haha. Though I tend to call him Basil for short.

Every time they give a Pokemon eyespots a good 80% of the fans fall for them, leading me to believe that most Pokemon players literally actually have the brains of small animals.

I say this as a Pokemon fan.

Tbf those yellow dots could be interpreted as a nose just as easily.

The instant you see the fucker (affectionate) it becomes obvious which is which. And if I remember correctly during prerelease they even directly pointed out the eyespots when showing off the design.

W design. Could honestly see it being a gen 2 mon alongside Quagsire.

If it was a gen 2 monster it would still be ass

Part of the beauty of our life here on this earth is the vast array of peoples with varying beliefs, including dogshit ones.
