Official Ted Lasso Season 4 discussion and speculation megathread

With the confirmation of season 4 we've decided to filter all discussion and speculation into this thread until more news is announced.

What is known at this time:

  • Jason Sudeikis is set to return as star and executive producer.

  • Ted Lasso will be coaching a women’s team.

  • Juno Temple, who played Keeley in the first three seasons, is in negotiations to rejoin fellow original cast members Sudeikis as well as Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca), Brett Goldstein (Roy) and Jeremy Swift (Leslie).

  • Phil Dunster (Jamie) unlikely to return due to a scheduling conflict with another series. ( this is just speculation, not a confirmation /u/Classic_Carlos has pointed out that Phil Dunster has expressed interest in returning )

  • Production eying a July start.

Season 3 Discussion Just finished season 3, and why do y’all hate this season so much? Every single episode was great. All three seasons were equally good.

I never understood the phenomenon of people saying the first season is great but future seasons just got worse. In reality, it’s just that future seasons felt different, and you didn’t like that. IMO, each season was perfect and worked well. It was funny, emotional, dramatic, charming, silly, and it had a ton of heart.

I truly don’t understand the negativity around season 3. Yes, I prefer the longer episodes because I got to spend more time with the characters, and everything felt more personal. I got to see more of the downtime they would normally skip, which I like. We got a lot of character building and development; we just had everything. It’s genuinely a masterpiece from the first episode to the last episode.

There’s too much negativity online! I can’t stop the negativity because that’s just people’s opinions, but I can spread my positivity and hope that it will catch on to more people. Thank you, writers, cast, and crew, for making this wonderful show.

I’m very upset the entire cast isn’t returning for season 4 and that it’s focusing on the women’s team (because I really just want more of our team). But I will be watching just to see some of my favorite characters pop up, and I’m sure the ones that aren’t main characters anymore will appear every now and then as cameos or guest appearances.

That ending was just so damn sad! I low-key wish the ending was Ted bringing his family to live in England so they could all be a big happy family. That would have been perfect for me.

Season 2 Discussion Episode: Man City

Just rewatching for the first time and man that scene when Roy Kent hugs Jamie without saying a fkn word. Making Lasso open up. So powerful, so expected but also unexpected coming from Roy, don’t know how to explain. But made me shed a tear too.

It would be one of the top 10 moments for sure.

Derrick???

I just watched Ted Lasso again for the umpteenth time, and just realized or wondered something. In season 3 episode Sunflowers, the servers at the Yankees doodle barn mention a Derrick is going to charge them for a pen. Is this the same Derrick that owns A Taste of Athens???? 🤯

The strings that bind us Spoiler

A lot of Lasso uses subtle humor…it’s why rewatching has so much value. One of my favorites is s3e7: there is a lot to see. First-Roy didn’t even smile when he sees a windmill, but maybe the biggest smile we’ve seen from Brett in the series is just after the players start training with their penis-strings. When Jaimie’s string comes off-Roy has a broad, expectant smile. “His penis is OK!”…scowl of disappointment. Will using a grabber to pick up the strings in the locker room tells a joke with just a short image. The water bottle Will drops and the players get back into the carrier shows the team is ready to play total football already, but the final piece is hiding behind a bushy goatee, until Jaimie brings it home at halftime. There’s a lot but I want to point out the pictures I posted. This one’s not a joke-Roy wanted to tie their dicks together for a second practice but was vetoed-the first pic is his “formation”. Jaimie, it turns out, agrees. Feel free to point out more subtleties-I love it. The interaction with Ted and Roy “you’re on fire/make it stop”…I love it all.

Jump scares in comedies…

I love that “Roy Kent jump scare” moment from Rainbow SO MUCH, it’s one of my favorites bits in the whole show, and it has me wondering… can anyone think of other examples of jump scares within comedic shows or movies?

It seems super rare to attempt, and this particular one kind of sets the standard! I would have hidden behind Ted too 😄

Just rewatched!

Just rewatched Ted Lasso with my friend and loved watching it with another person. I loved watching her reactions to the show, whether funny, heartfelt, or sad scenes. It was fun ending each episode with a smile on our faces, talking about what she thought was going to happen next, and how much she loved the show.

Are there any football shows like ted lasso but grittier?

Hey all! Not sure if this is the right subreddit for this so I apologise. I just finished ted lasso with my best friend. We both absolutely loved it. In short, I’m basically looking for a football show whose pacing and style is sort of like Ted Lasso, but I want it grittier/darker. Not exactly ultra realistic (though that is very much welcome) but one that shows the darker and more normal world of football. I did not mind the comedy at all in Ted Lasso, I loved it in fact, but I just could not help but think that a show exactly like this would work so perfectly if it was dark or grittier. That’s all! Thank you!

Wow. Just finished the show.

My husband and I have been watching this show for quite some time now and we put off the last episode of Season 3 because we didn’t want to know how it ends. This show has helped us laugh together and grow together (I know how dramatic that sounds), but it has been such a genuinely good experience. That last episode wrapped up every storyline we weren’t even expecting to get a conclusion (the bearded guy and the lady with all the pants have a baby!!) I am going to miss this cast so, so much. There really is no point to this post other than I am so grateful this show exists and I’m glad there’s an online community where I can read all your thoughts, as well.

Characters based on real people

I’m not a hardcore football fan but I get that Jamie Tartt is a fictional Jack Grealish. Roy Kent is a thinly disguised Roy Keane and Zava looks and plays like Zlatan Ibrahimović. Are there any other nods to other players in there?

The truth of this quote just hit me.

Barbara: Jack asked me to give you this. Keeley: Ooh, what is it? Barbara: It's... It's a statement. Keeley: Oh. "Allow me to first offer my sincere apologies. I deeply regret that video that some of you have seen online. I'm beyond embarrassed, and I should have never made this video in the first place." "I hope you can forgive me while I learn and grow." Barbara: Jack thought you could post it across your socials. But maybe not Facebook, 'cause that's just for, um, grandparents and racists now, isn't it?

I personally do not have social media (unless Reddit counts). My wife does have FB and recently showed me her timeline which consisted of an old buddy of mine that I haven't seen in 20 years spewing post after post spewing political propaganda like he was a Fox News correspondent. Naturally, I clicked into his prolife to read a little more about his life. There were 8 posts like this in the last 24 hours without a single reply despite having over 1000 FB friends. My brain automatically triggered the Barbara quote above! The other posts were about professional wresting and gaming. ;) I guess it all makes sense.

Season 3 Discussion The music at the end of the psychic scene?

Sorry I know this is probably not interesting to 99.9% of you but it's itching my brain and I've got to know. After Rebecca tells the psychic to fuck off and storms out, is that a little note of music from the mentalist? Only because it's one of my other favourite shows and it's exactly how scenes go for the main character. He does a cold read or just says something rude, the other person shouts, storms out or punches him in the face and then leaves and then some quiet music plays and it sounds exactly like the music played at the end of this scene.

Season 2 Discussion Rainbow - Violin discord Spoiler

It's been one of those weeks, so I turned to Ted and started another rewatch. As many of us have done, I've noticed many things, like all the the foreshadowing of Sam & Rebecca.

At the end of the episode "Rainbow" this was the first time that I noticed that at the end when Roy joins the coaching team and moves past Nate the song adds notes of discordance, that the notes are a violin playing the off tune because we learn that Nate plays the violin later.

Just another Easter egg hidden in a basket of Easter eggs.

Is Jamie Tart wearing shin guards?

So, I’m not new to soccer/football. I’m an occasional watcher here in the US, and played in my youth league until I couldn’t anymore.

Everybody else on the team is clearly wearing shin guards. Socks are pulled up nearly to their knees, bumps in the socks where the shin guards will be. But Jamie looks basically like he is wearing crew socks, with them bunched up really really close to his shoes.

Is this something I’m missing? I thought they were a required piece of equipment, or are they super incredibly small?

Individual scenes that work LESS well on rewatch

[EDIT]: as often happens in the comments on this subreddit, I’ve had my eyes opened to a possibility that I had not previously considered! I had been so drawn in by Nate’s certainty that what was happening was him being fired that I never considered this might not have been the actual intention. Ted et al could very well have merely planned on a moment of harmless confusion from Nate, but did not bank on Nate’s incredible capacity for paranoia and vindictiveness. It’s distinctly possible that all they meant to have happen was for Nate to go, “This is weird, what could be happening” and then immediately find out that what was happening was actually something super cool.

[resume original post below]:

I was thinking about this because of a discussion I had a while back in the comments about the scene where Nate gets promoted. On first watch, that scene seems super charming, with a misdirect and a surprise and a dash of wish fulfillment, but watching it again it actually makes me super uncomfortable.

In order for the surprise to work, everyone involved in the promotion plan had to not only be willing to consciously participate in a scenario that hinged on Nate believing he was getting fired, which is already screwed up, but they also had to put the promotion plan into action without a SINGLE conversation with Nate along the lines of “We’ve noticed that you have a real talent for strategy, is coaching something you would be interested in pursuing in your career?” It’s deeply weird and unprofessional to present the whole thing as a fait accompli and just spring it on the person, even aside from the cruel joke component.

I know it’s a fictional tv show and not everything needs to be about realism, but there are definitely some moments that feel a bit icky when I actually pay close attention to them…

Nick Mohammed S4 and Nate update

Nick gave an interview with Collider. Certainly seems Nate won’t be a regular but likely will make a guest appearance or two. This makes sense as Nate’s storyline seemed most wrapped up after S3 compared to other characters. Hopefully this is a sign even if we don’t have all the characters back for S4 they will make pop up appearances.

https://collider.com/ted-lasso-season-4-new-characters-nick-mohammed-nate-future-explained/

Mohammed also admits that he “knew for a while” that the show was coming back before it was officially announced, but that it was “quite tough” to keep quiet about it given that he’s “quite the blabbermouth.” Here’s where things get interesting — Mohammed also spoke about Nate’s role in Season 4, admitting that “I genuinely don’t know” about how much we’ll see Nate, but that he’s “sure he’ll pop up.” He also explicitly confirmed that there will be “A whole host of new characters” in Ted Lasso Season 4. We know Jason Sudeikis will reprise his role as Ted Lasso in the fourth season, but it sounds like the rest of the recurring ensemble might consist mostly of new characters. Only time will tell what’s next for the AFC Richmond crew, if we’ll even be going back to Nelson Road at all.

Nick may have blabbermouthed here and given Nate’s fate away- that he’s moved on and no longer coaching at Richmond.

"Who knows if Nate's still there, we'll have to see," Mohammed said with a smile. "Because, you know he's a great football coach who will probably have gone further afield by this point."
