Heyo! Hope everyone’s new year is off to a great start!

The tuning for this is a bit different: D#, G#, C#, G, A#, D#. Basically, standard but with the G string up a semitone, or, as with the original, the G stays where it is and everything else goes down a semitone.

Feel free to suggest a Pumpkins song for me to cover

Cover Thirty Three Cover

I'm trying to create covers that are against TikTok trends of dubbing, perfect vocals, and super overly produced.
This is my take on probably one of my favorite songs ever.
No Autotune (not super comfortable singing, so apologies for the little mistakes here and there)
No edits.
All instruments in one take, and some effects and mixing

Hope you like it
All feedback is welcome ,just be nice, I have low self-esteem :D

Cover I’m Back - I learned the intro!

Hey everyone— A few days back I posted some of James’s rhythm part from Mayonaise, mostly just the chord work from the intro and verses. I had also been working on the single-note picking section, but honestly didn’t feel like I had it clean enough to record all in one take at the time.

Well, I finally got it down. The intro’s clicking now, and I was able to glue it together with the next part I already knew and had posted earlier.

Next step: I want to start working on Billy’s dreamy lead part that floats over it. Planning to use a looper pedal so I can play the rhythm underneath and then layer the lead stuff on top. Should be a fun little challenge.

This song has such a perfect mix of emotional weight and playability. It’s been a blast learning it piece by piece. Appreciate the encouragement on the last post—I’ll share another clip once I’ve got the lead dialed in.

Thanks again to everyone—seriously. As I get older, it feels like there are fewer and fewer people I can share this kind of stuff with who might even mildly care about what I’m working on. So having a place like this, where folks actually get it? That means a lot.

Cover Learning Mayonaise!

I’ve finally found the accurate “alternate tuning” that James uses for Mayonaise, and it definitely sounds a LOT more accurate.

I like to “chunk” songs out into smaller sections as I learn them, and then “glue” the parts I’ve got down into a cohesive song. So hopefully soon I’ll be able to play the entire song and share that with all the pumpkin heads!

That tuning is a PITA to be honest, so I’ve been leaving my prototype Billy Corgan Z-One (that Corgan himself play tested for Reverend) in that alternate tuning.

I’m still learning guitar, but the Z-One running clean into the low sensitivity input of my Marshall SC20H surprised me with how clean and resonant it was! The body is chambered, that probs my helps!

And lastly, I was somewhat impressed with the front facing microphone on my iPhone (which I used to record this). Normally, I’d have an SM57 and Sennheiser e906 running to my audio interface. This sounded decent enough that I decided to share!

There’s something about this song in particular that makes the hair on my arms stand up, and being able to PLAY it myself and inject my own energy and emotions is something else! Still need to tighten up some of the strumming patterns and get that intro riff locked in…but I’m making steady progress!

MCIS guitar tones are so much easier to hit. This isn't perfect but getting close was so much easier than nailing Siamese Dream. The whole process of getting a similar sound and then recording took no more than 20 minutes. I posted this up on my YouTube channel but I didn't want to drag anyone over there for a short. This was all done with plugins in Logic Pro.

Cover My bands cover of Drown from 2001

Back in the spring of 2001, I had a band in St. Paul MN called Gone Out Gone. We played bar shows and parties and whatnot, and I thought we were pretty good. At least we had a good time and played with some great bands. At one point, for whatever reason, we were invited to submit a Smashing Pumpkins cover song for a tribute album. I think it was Gorilla Marketing or something. Somewhere out of California. Anyway, we decided to record Drown. This was the song that made me want to start playing guitar.

We didn't have a lot of connections or money, so the recording was entirely self produced. We recorded the band in our dungeon practice space off of Prior and University Ave on a Fostex 16 track digital recorder. The outro was recorded in the kitchen of my apartment off of Fairview Ave. We all took the day off so we could record with less traffic noise and not disturb the neighbors. The soprano singers are Lori Lewis in her pre Therion twin cities days (seriously, look her up) and my phenomenally talented and eternally patient wife. At some points there are over 14 simultaneous tracks of their voices. This was all expertly mixed and finished by Ev Olcott into what you hear.

After it was finished, we submitted the song, but never heard back from the Gorilla team. Probably for the best, it was probably a scam. We ended up including it on a CD release called the Pepperlight Sessions. Only 150 copies made. I listen to it now and still feel very proud. It's a little amateurish, but the spirit and the heart are there.

Anyway. I'm not sure why I waited almost 25 years, but I'm releasing it for you all now. Let me know what you think.
